amazing! will the endorsement of the mayor and city council come after the election, or should we start "pounding" the steps of city hall now???

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
True that...my sources say the same thing about Lorain...it's an effort by three council people, CSU faculty and other experts. Cimperman is also working on a different sort of overlay for the "real" warehouse district in the east 30s-50s along Hamilton, St. Clair and Lakeside. This would be for more live-work, light industrial type development.

Living and Working Near Mass Transit
Brilliant, Dan! This is the truth in Cleveland and many other similarly de-concentrated/de-populated cities. Thankfully, there have been several significant concerted efforts by the powers-that-be to change this. As boring and dense as zoning code may be to the wider populus, it affects how we live EVERY DAY in so many ways. This is one reason why I'm thankful that we have city planners in some of the most powerful positions in the City. They understand this stuff and are taking vital steps to reverse the sort of regulations that have prevented mixed-use and transit-oriented development for decades!

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
so, who watched the debate on TV tonight? Oh, right, no one! Since WKYC didn't broadcast it! I was astonished to hear that it was available by webcast only, because let's face it, a VERY limited # of Clevelanders actually knows how to access that... or WOULD access it, for that matter. So, it was pretty much relegated to a 30 second feature on the Channel 3 (WKYC) nightly news. Ridiculous! I'll hold judgements on who won, but will say this: it was a good debate with many good questions and several duds and both candidates got their fair share of jabs in at each other's expense. It didn't get out of hand by any means, but the crowd was definitely on the edge of their seats, waiting for their candidate to deliver the knockout punch. (It never came, in my opinion) Basically, both of them called each other on "spin" and misinformation and all that, so who really knows who's lying? Other interesting questions: how many in the audience were actually there because they are still on the fence? I assumed that a large % had already made up their minds. Also, how many in attendance were actually Cleveland residents???

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
This is definitely part of it, B12. Plus the scale of things is different on 25th. And the terrain is different. I mean, consider the difference that would have been made in connecting the Detroit end of West 25th to the Lorain end with the original HOPE VI development. That was prevented by the slippery slope that lies behind the Riverview Towers and now stands between all development opportunities on that valuable land. I think the opportunities are greater on 25th, but the potential for Gordon Square to realize its "best self" anytime soon is much greater.
-
Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Yes, it should take off and it should have less constraints/conflicts than West 25th does. It's still a major work-in-progress itself and I feel like Gordon Square stands a greater chance of succeeding in its mission. That being said, I don't know that there is a common vision for W. 25th. Gordon Square has its leader in Levin and its vision with the theaters, historic preservation and residential growth. W. 25th is a great place, but as you move out from Market Square, it seems to be struggling to find itself.

I agree that a movie theater can help to diversify the entertainment selection in this 'hood and thus increase foot traffic and the resulting success of the district measurably. I would definitely hop on over there for a show once a week and spend a little cash while in the vacinity! Question: I haven't been inside the theater, but I'm assuming that it's one big space. Are there plans to divide it up? I seem to remember the Centrum (Coventry) as a large, beautiful theater that had been awkwardly carved into multiple screens...

Cleveland: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
Is this official info? I heard the same...that they were considering the West Bank of the Flats...and I agree that it should be held, primarily, in the Lower Euclid/Prospect area. I think Lower Euclid is going to be pretty torn up by next year, so Prospect makes more sense. I also thought it was going to be longer next year? Spanning two weekends? What happened to that?

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Oh, I agree that the potential is there! And I've been following Levin's work and the progress of Detroit-Shoreway and Gordon Square for the past couple years. It's very exciting and inspiring! Something that every Clevelander should know about and be proud of. I think Battery Park will only serve to help this along...

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Those interiors are looking good! The next step for this neighborhood is to redo the retail between the intersection of Detroit & Lake and Gordon Square. I think the market should take care of some of this, but as it stands right now, the retail along this portion of Detroit is pretty unsightly. Drive-thrus and car washes and vacancies pretty consistently on the north side of the avenue. The south side, on the other hand, isn't bad.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
For those of you who have never been on or around the site, this should give you a better idea of what the context is... The view from the northwest corner of the site, looking east and southeast: Looking directly south from the same spot, down West 76th: The pedestrian connection to Edgewater on West 76th (scary!) What it looks like at the bottom (there's another, scarier tunnel beyond this!): If you actually make it through, you're greeted by this beautiful mudslide: Further south on 76th, but from the southwest corner of the site: The old Snickers: Goodwalt Avenue runs along the southern border of the site: West 74th, looking south towards Detroit: West 73rd, across the road from the site's eastern boundary: From the northeast corner of the site, looking east down Father Caruso: Moving east on Father Caruso, this is the northern view: Some newer homes along Fr. Caruso: More new homes on Father Caruso and West 66th: Across the street from the townhomes, the recently rebuilt ped/bike connection to Edgewater: I really hope they are planning to do something to rehab the West 76th Street pedestrian tunnel, because believe me, it's scary! This would be a huge asset to the site, as the other end brings you right to the beach! Happy building!

coventry merchants regain street's cred via american apparel
fair-labor activism, but not necessarily coupled with a readiness to pay more for a staple good. on the other hand, you're right that the design and the quality are superior to a target/tj max product. I just hope they can brand their product as such...worth paying a bit more for! I mean, that's the whole point of branding and marketing...identifying your product as unique and worth the $$$.

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
Campbell has the endorsement of Crain's Cleveland Business, for what that's worth... From today's online edition, the closing statement wraps it up pretty well: "We believe Mr. Jackson, like Mayor Campbell, is an earnest public servant who wants what’s best for the people of the city of Cleveland. However, we don’t find in Mr. Jackson’s economic development platform much that is substantially different or better than programs and initiatives that already are in place or in progress under the current administration. Rather than switch captains of the ship simply for the sake of change, we would prefer to stay with a pilot who can build upon four years of experience at the helm. It is why we endorse Jane Campbell for mayor." If you haven't already, everyone should try to get in on the Wednesday debate at CSU. From what i understand, it is the only one of the three debates that will be free. Still, RSVPs are required, as space will be limited! Call (216)781-8375 or email [email protected] to do so.

coventry merchants regain street's cred via american apparel
True! This is a great sign for Coventry! These shops really are popping up in the hippest, trendiest neighborhoods coast-to-coast. And admittedly, I'm surprised that they've chosen Coventry for their first Cleveland area store. Coventry is "cool" by many standards, but it's lost a lot of the edge that American Apparel's other locations (that I've witnessed) can boast. I'd love to see Coventry retail thriving again (not just its bar scene), so I'll take this as a success. However, I would like to see retailers like American Apparel opening up shop down on Ford/Euclid or Lower Prospect/Lower Euclid in the near future as those districts come into their own. Also, I worry that the appeal of American Apparel will be lost on most of the Coventry (and Cleveland) crowd. I've actually had this conversation with friends recently... Their merchandise is really just plain t-shirts, hoodies, tanks, etc. and is over-priced as such. This is certainly part of their American-made and owned thing...and it might sell t-shirts in NYC, LA and SF, but in Cleveland? Where you can get a t-shirt from Target for $5? I don't know that they'll be able to sell plain t-shirts for $15 or logo-less hoodies in Cleveland for $45...even with some of the sexiest advertising on the planet!

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
From my perch upon high in Cleveland Browns Stadium yesterday, I saw two-train Waterfront Line trains going by every 5 minutes or so before, during and after game-time. I know this is a 10-times-a-year phenomenon as it pertains to Browns games, but why not, in such cases, run 3-car trains? The only time I've ever been OVER crowded (not just crowded) on a Green or Red-line train has been during a commute to or coming home from a game. Gladly, I can walk to both now, but back when that wasn't an option, this used to baffle me!

yes, that is an interesting choice, but I would like to think that there's a good reason for it! anyone here on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the RTA?

I know... I'm not glum, I just want to see shovels breaking up that asphalt and cranes in the air! You know what gets my blood pumping!

Unfortunately, I'm not too confident that we'll see any tenants until the Euclid Corridor construction is wrapped up. I wouldn't want to open my business here with the amount of heavy machinery that's out front right now and nothing to separate us but a big sheet of glass! I hope I'm wrong, though, cause I walk by here every day and I could use some new shoes...Camper, perhaps? Kenneth Cole? I could even buy my girl some makeup if there was something in a...say...Sephora?

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Got to sit in on both the Design Review and City Planning Commission hearings (yesterday and today) for the new E. 55th Street station. There are definitely great features to the station, but a few shorcomings (in my opinion) as well. I plan on registering my comments with RTA. For the most part, though, the form and function of the station will be top notch. Relating to recent comments on this thread, the Red Line platform will apparently be long enough to handle 3 cars! I don't know if that means anything, but it's something that caught my ear! PS: anyone else take the four-page survey that was being handed out today by RTA/City Year?
