Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
My wife's [least] favorite example to cite is the p.o.'d mother shaking her kids on the subway and yelling at them to sit still when she's just cracked open a sugar & caffeine loaded can of soda for them. This was a sad, but not uncommon sight to see when we lived in NYC and it's not absent here in Cleveland. But yeah, what do you do?

looks like a lot of surface for some panels! What the heck is that thing on the corner? Is that for Zeppelin docking?

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
The materials are all durable metal and the grey you're looking at is a metal mesh. The sign pieces are interchangeable, so that when institutions move or names change (Case/CWRU/etc.), the methods of the old wine-colored wayfinding system won't be replicated. You can see the old names behind the new ones on the existing signs... Good suggestions, MayDay. I think that there have already been updates made to this sign's design, as recommended by both the Univ. Circle Design Review Committee and City Planning. Also, as you can see, there are several different scales to this system. The one being discussed in the past few posts will only be found at a couple gateway locations. The others pictured previously will be more prominent throughout the neighborhood and a pedestrian scale system is forthcoming.

Cleveland- Painter's Union Apartments
They look nice! Comments about the location are that it's great for convenience to Downtown, especially if you're a walker, bicycle commuter or bus rider. You'll be a bit outside the heart of Ohio City or Detroit Shoreway, but still walkable distance to Market Ave or Gordon Square, plus walking distance to Stonebridge and all that's happening there. And the price is pretty reasonable!

Are these the units that the developer of the Detroit-Superior Lofts just rehabbed? There's available retail space on the ground floor?

Green Building / LEED
following from the above... February 18. 2008 4:30AM Solar panels on IMG Center next on firm’s green agenda By JENNIFER KEIRN Talking to colleagues in other major U.S. cities, Jim Breen gets a glimpse of the greening that’s coming to Cleveland’s commercial real estate market. “People (in other cities) tell me that if you’re not a LEED-registered building, you’re not even getting looked at,” said Mr. Breen, principal of local commercial real estate firm Breen + Fox. “It’s not here yet, but it will be here.” So Mr. Breen’s getting ahead of the green game by pursuing LEED certifications for the buildings he owns, the flagship of which is the IMG Center on East Ninth Street. Green building gaining ground in local commercial sector By JENNIFER KEIRN [Crain's] 4:30 am, February 18, 2008 Bill Doty took some serious flak from his peers when he hopped on the green-building bandwagon more than 10 years ago. This 30-plus-year architect and co-founder of Doty & Miller Architects said he “got harassed” back then about his support for a movement hovering on the fringe, seen by many as a bunch of tree-huggers promoting premium-priced green products and unrealistic construction methods. Cleveland: Random Development and News
"random" because it's not quite CSU and not entirely about ECTP, but newsworthy nonetheless! CSU, Silver Line woo another buyer By STAN BULLARD [Crain's] 4:30 am, February 18, 2008 Joseph Shafran, president of Paran Management Co., heads an investor group that paid $3.6 million for the 97-suite University Commons Apartments, 1900 E. 30th St. in Cleveland. April Beates, Paran marketing director, said the realty company was attracted by the building’s proximity to Cleveland State University and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s new hybrid-bus Silver Line on Euclid Avenue.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I feel like this thread should have a different title, so I changed the subject line in this post... North Point complex sold in $114M deal By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, February 18, 2008 HRPT Properties Trust of Boston has paid $114 million for the North Point Tower complex in downtown Cleveland. The sale price surpasses the $100 million market value the county assigns the complex for property tax purposes. The 17-story office tower and attached five-story building at 1001 Lakeside Ave. encompass 1 million square feet. HRPT likes to own office buildings with large numbers of government and office tenants, according to its web site. North Point houses the Cleveland office of legal titan Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue, among others. The seller was Axa Equitable Life Insurance, a U.S. unit of Axa Group of France.

I'm sure we all agree here and I even contacted them and told them that they need to open a shop in Detroit-Shoreway or St. Clair-Superior! I also echo your sentiment about Pittsburgh and neighborhood retail. It is possible to have restaurants and shopping in city neighborhoods! But that's another thread...

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
ha! 20' bunker! I just wish they hadn't torn them out so long ago without being ready to replace them with their perfect new saplings... how many times have you been through there when the makeshift stop sign has either been lying on its back or blocked by a delivery truck using the striped area as a parking space? I know, I complain about this a lot, but the whole $7m streetscape thing really pisses me off. Otherwise, kudos to Zaremba on continued and highly visible progress!

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
and what is the status of the streetscape project? The first block, in front of reserve square, has been partially completed, but the median is still being used as an illegal parking lot. My take is that it's less attractive and less safe for pedestrians than it was 2 years ago. Finishing the median could help me change my mind!

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
so, not a loss in the typical sense of the word... "Owner Tom Leneghan has had a prospective buyer running and leasing it for the past year, with an option to buy the five-year-old bar. But no sale's gone through, and Leneghan is getting "a little nervous." ... "The bar closed two weeks ago for what Leneghan calls "routine" maintenance. It should reopen by March 1. Also in the article: "P.J. McIntyre's, an Irish pub and music venue at Kamm's Corners that opened last September... That project has gone so well that Leneghan is considering other locations, possibly including one on the soon-to-be-redeveloped Flats' east bank."

A Piece of Cleveland
I know A Piece of Cleveland (APOC) has been mentioned on here in various places, but I felt like starting a new thread for them, as I think they are SO COOL!!! From their website: www.apieceofcleveland.com About APOC A Piece Of Cleveland provides new life for old materials. We work primarily with salvaged lumber and wood recovered from businesses. All of our products have a unique story and design. No two pieces are identical. In a way, you are buying a custom made creation when you choose APOC! With each item that you purchase from A Piece Of Cleveland we will send with it a “Re-Birth Certificate” that tells you everything you need to know about your product. We explain where the materials were recovered, who helped re-birth the materials to life, and what interesting stories that we have unearthed about the design and materials. Our goal is to preserve and create.

Congrats, 3231, on hijacking the restaurant openings thread with news of your baby! Unless she's planning on cooking us all a delicious dinner for Valentine's day, I find this entire conversation to be very inappropriate. :-D Then again, I MAE be the only one here who feels this way...

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
All the talk from last night's game is about Manu going nuts for 46 points, hitting 8 threes, but the real story is that the Spurs picked apart our defense and went to the line twice as much as the Cavs, scoring 26 points in the process (the Cavs scored 12). There's no way the Spurs should come into Cleveland and score 112 points. That's three straight games in which we've allowed over 110 points! Where's the D Mike Brown???

Yet Another Findlay Market Thread (Cincinnati)
You know what's sad? I lived in Cincinnati for 4 years and never went to the market while it was open! Those pics depict that great, old-timey feel that I found so charming about OTR, but with people! Great stuff. On a side note, I wonder why Cleveland has so few buskers around its large public gathering places. Cincinnati was always full of them... Ludlow, the bridges to the stadiums, Findlay Market, etc... In Cleveland, the only place I ever see anyone is that sax guy who plays at Playhouse Square every night. Sure, there are staged events that bring street performers out, but it's a much different ballgame.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
This is great news! My sister has lived in "the Valley" off and on over the past few years and I'm sure she would attest to the need for redevelopment. CD, any clues on the redevelopment plans? Will it be similar to the rebuilding of Valley View (Tremont Pointe) and Arbor Park or will it be more along the lines of the Carver Park Hope VI project?
