  1. That's fantastic news about 668! The difference this will make to this part of Euclid cannot be overstated. The same goes for the Eli Mann properties, east of 9th Street. It's all coming together! The Superior Ave projects should be great too. The south side of the street over there has such nice form to it. The north side could use some work, though... I'm curious about the remainder of the 32 proposals, though. Is this list just the first 5 to be awarded or are they the only ones that succeeded? I'm specifically curious about the Capitol Theatre in Gordon Square.
  2. Soapbox alert! So, how can the developers complain then? It's a level playing field. If you want the $, you've got to step your game up a bit to keep your profit margin. In the end, Cleveland is competing with the 'burbs and more importantly, with the rest of the region and country. If Cleveland's housing stock is more attractive, well-built, sustainable, and cheaper to maintain that that of Columbus, Pittsburgh, Detroit, etc., then we're all better off. Plus it contributes to the abstract notion in people's minds of our city as a place with an eye towards the future and that isn't lagging behind the nation in terms of advancing building design & technology and concern for the wellbeing of others and future generations.
  3. Those requirements are for use of City incentives (tax abatement, grants, etc.) and are not conditions for receiving permits, right?

Grew up in University Heights, went to school at Ignatius, moved away for 10 years, returned to Cleveland and chose to rent in Ohio City for 2 years, bought a house in Detroit-Shoreway because of the relative affordability, amount of new development, intact history and architecture, proximity to lake, etc... I would recommend it to my friends, but most of them already live in the neighborhood!
  5. That's what I was talking about, but it was pretty tongue-in-cheek. I unfortunately missed the community meeting that was held in the Mandel Center two weeks ago. I wonder if this was brought up? Or at least the idea of having a new location for a garden?
  6. ^I think the operative word here was "off hand." Seeing that it took you 10 hours to post your findings, I'd say you might be disqualified. But hey, I'm not the one who put the 6-pack on the table! And I'd be willing to bet that he'd give it to you if you had some grand plan that you wanted to share with us about what to do with 1,314 concrete tubs... On a related note, I'm with 8Shades in my curiosity about the County's disposal/reuse plans for all these materials. If that's not part of what they paid for with all the contracts they signed, then they're even bigger a-holes than I'd previously thought.

    I was screaming about those missed calls too. Not just on that play either. And then they call a questionable one on the punt return that cost us 29 yards (and the game)? Nice time to get your whistles out of your a$$es jerks! Still there are plenty of other things that we can't blame on the refs... blowing 2 timeouts on that challenge? Poor short passes from DA all second half? Does anyone else think we need to get Cribbs more involved in the offense? The guy's a big time playmaker who can pass, run, and create all sorts of havoc!

Mandel Center moves to new $11M home By SHANNON MORTLAND 4:30 am, November 12, 2007 Case Western Reserve University’s Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations has moved out of the basement and into a new, $11 million home. The 26,000-square-foot building officially opened last week at 11402 Bellflower Road, though classes have been held there this fall while construction was completed, said Susan Lajoie Eagan, executive director of the Mandel Center. The project was financed largely with a $6.75 million gift from Cleveland’s Mandel Foundation, which has supported the Mandel Center since its inception in 1984. Tall windows lining the front of the new building provide views of the campus from several angles and allow people on the street to see what’s happening inside the structure. “We wanted to connect the indoor Case community with the outdoor Case community,” Dr. Lajoie Eagan said. The student lounge on the building’s first floor resembles a living room with a working fireplace and overlooks a public courtyard that abuts surrounding apartment buildings. The courtyard was designed with an eye toward the neighborhood, which lost a public garden that existed on the land before the center was built, Dr. Lajoie Eagan said. The second floor houses the administrative offices for the Mandel Center’s faculty and staff, some of whom previously were scattered across campus. The Mandel Center’s administrative offices previously were housed in the basement of the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center at 11206 Euclid Ave. and classes were held in various campus buildings, so the Mandel Center didn’t have a visible presence in the community. “The image conveyed by having our administrative offices (in the basement) did not equate with our rank and stature,” Dr. Lajoie Eagan said. The new offices also were designed to give faculty and staff plenty of places to meet. The second floor faculty lounge sits next to a rooftop garden with bench seating and the work spaces in the middle of the floor were designed in “quads” that have a universal meeting table in the middle. “I didn’t want Dilbert cubicles,” Dr. Lajoie Eagan said.

BP severs last tie to downtown tower By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, November 12, 2007 Harbor Group International of Norfolk, Va., has decided it wants to play “Let’s Make a Deal” a year early at 200 Public Square, formerly known as BP Tower. The property owner has put together 250,000 square feet of office space by allowing energy giant BP to buy out its lease on empty space in the former BP America headquarters now rather than coughing up rent until September 2008. Most of the space is on five floors in the lower part of the skyscraper in downtown Cleveland. Brian Boehmcke, Harbor Group’s asset manager for 200 Public Square, said the company wanted to put together enough office space to woo some of the tenants that are looking for new downtown offices. BP paid about 85 cents on the dollar for paying off the lease early, he said. The deal excluded offices that BP has subleased to other tenants since its 1998 exit from Cleveland. Alex Jelepis, a Grubb & Ellis Co. broker for 200 Public Square, said the space carries an asking rate of $22.50 to $25 a square foot. One big name — the Baker Hostetler law firm — is not on the tower’s prospect list. Mr. Boehmcke said the building’s bid for the firm disappeared after a tenant decided to keep space on the skyscraper’s upper floors that Baker would have needed.

  24. They're all subject to design review. Some neighborhoods have local design review, while others go before a citywide panel. In cases like this, there's no law saying they have to build any differently, so it's a matter of advising, but not necessarily enforcement. With the new overlay district along Euclid in Midtown, the enhanced code will be enforceable. So, no Walmart on Euclid @ 55th unless its main entrance is on the Euclid sidewalk, parking is in the rear and there are at least 3 floors.
