My house in Detroit-Shoreway (Franklin, west of 58th) scored a 73. There are several omissions on the list, but several that shouldn't be on the list anymore as well. The largest oversight was the movie theater (Tower City is about 2 miles, which is closer than Ridge Park Square!) and yeah, where's the transit? My last apartment in Ohio City also scored a 73 (oddly enough, neither Dave's, nor the West Side Market showed up on the list). My parents' house in Shaker Heights, where I lived from age 12-17, scored a 31. The brownstone I lived in for 3 years in Brooklyn, NY scored a 91. My last apartment in Portland, OR scored a 95. My last apartment in Cincinnati (on Ludlow) scored a 78.
  2. I'm pretty sure we're looking at something like 2011, sadly. I think (but don't quote me) that Matt Zone (the Councilman) indicated 2010 or 2011 for the start of the shoreway project. So, realistically, 2011. If they're doing something now, it's likely just some basic maintenance, but good for them! As far as he knows, it's the City's responsibility, not the state or the railroad... DanB, are you having trouble renting the units? Or do you just want to sell? As for restoration work, have you contacted the Cleveland Restoration Society, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, or the City of Cleveland's Community Development or Economic Development departments? Each of these has access to funds and advisors for restoration work and I'm quite positive that your building would qualify. Glad to hear you're working on it!
  3. the bus stop at the end of my street when I was a kid was almost always shattered. They'd replace it, and it'd be shattered a week later. That was about 20 years ago, so this is a time-honored tradition... nothing new!
  4. it should be back up now... i was on this morning. last night's events were not a total wash. the bike tour of battery park and gordon square were mostly rained out. I did, however, duck into the Capitol Theater for a little private tour. There's a long way to go! The neighborhood meeting on the Lake/Detroit intersection went well. They're currently working on getting in touch with the owners of the gas station and burger king at the intersection to see if they'll cooperated with the community on new streetscape/landscape plans. The idea is that W. 76th is an access point to the "Edgewater Hill" neighborhood and to the beach beyond, but you'd never know it. (see map below) New landscaping and pocket parks would create a gateway here and a new banner program will highlight neighborhood assets and character. I really liked the proposed banners and they will be posted soon on the UDC website. Reddstone's owner was in attendance and described a neighborhood joint with great pub grub and a little rock n' roll (he's owned Peabody's)... not of the live variety, though. He's targeting a mid-August "soft" opening and a formal opening in September. Sounds good! When asked if the prices would be conducive to the surrounding residents, he said yes...highlighting food specials on particular nights that would draw people in. When asked if it would be a good place to bring a family, he said no, that it would be more of a bring your friends or spouse or a date spot. 40 seats indoors, 60 outdoors. Can't wait! One final note... Councilman Zone addressed questions about the W. 76th Street tunnel, which everyone knows is in horrible condition. He said that its renovation would be part of the Lakefront Plan, so we'll just have to hold on, but that it's definitely on the agenda.
  5. wow, and I thought I was going to get an update on yesterday's City Club session!
  6. the two are a little different... and why not have both and really become a cycling hub? next thing you know, we'll have a bicycle mart going into the old May Co. Building! I'd love to support this in any way possible, but somehow $5,000 in fundraising and $5,000 in sponsorships doesn't give me a ton of confidence. Especially for a project with a $10 million price tag. I'm anxious to hear more, though!

Honestly, Musky, with you? I haven't a clue! Thanks for the link, but I'm looking for further back. Unless the 1959 picture contains the original facade, but I'd be surprised...
  10. RE: tonight's Detroit & Lake meeting: The community meeting is tonight, from 7:00-8:30 at the American Greetings Building (1300 W. 78th Street - the former 1300 gallery). A rep from the UDC will speak about banner designs, the owner of ReddStone will be there, and landscaping plans for the Detroit/Lake intersection will be presented.
  11. Hey everyone, I'm looking for old pictures of the Euclid Tavern in Cleveland. City/County records show the building was built in 1906 and I've got nothing prior to 1959 by way of images. I checked ClevelandMemory.org and found nothing. Below are a few shots to get you going. I'm looking for images of the original storefront/facade. Thanks!
  12. Grant designed to create more housing opportunities Business First of Columbus Thursday, July 19, 2007 One of the biggest challenges for Columbus-based nonprofit developer Homes on the Hill has been closing the gap between housing rehabilitation costs and the selling price to local families. A $500,000 grant from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency will do just that. The funding plus state and city aid will let Homes on the Hill maintain existing sale prices for 12 homes it is expected to build over the next 30 months. 13. Man who stole busts from Cultural Gardens avoids prison Posted by Jim Nichols July 19, 2007 11:52AM Categories: Breaking News, Crime A drug addict who stole two historic bronze busts from the Cleveland Cultural Gardens begged for and received drug treatment instead of prison time today, but a judge ordered him to pay for the recovered busts' re-installation. Donald Blevins, 28, of Cleveland, told Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Stuart Friedman that his 73 days in jail helped him finally see he had lost everything because of his addiction...
  14. Also, they've been circulating this map a lot lately: http://dscdo.org/podmap.html
  15. I heard another interesting tidbit regarding the neighborhood while jogging through Battery Park last week. Some Detroit-Shoreway CDO staffers stopped me and told me about an upcoming community meeting that will be led by the Urban Design Collaborative on the intersection of Detroit & Lake. I'm not sure who's done what at this intersection to date, but this is a great conversation to have and an important intersection for this community that needs some work! I'll post more when I can find it.
  16. I was actually pleased when the Giant Eagle scheduled to open on that site appeared to be pulling out. Now we're back to that or something similar. This keeps the future of the Giant Eagle on Clifton somewhat in jeopardy, I would presume. [edited based on Musky's edits]

way to go, MTS! I was just perusing the print edition, so I didn't get into links and what not.
  18. i agree...boring, but an improvement. I'd still like to see where that old building is going, though. Anyone have an idea?

The new edition of "Downtown Digs" is now out. I'm not going to cross reference everything with the website (www.downtown-digs.com), but the print edition should be included with the latest issue of Cleveland Magazine. Also, the Living in Cleveland Center, has put out its new "Live Cleveland!" guide to the city. It has a much more expansive view of the city and its neighborhoods. The website (livingincleveland.nhlink.net) is to be updated this summer. Another helpful link on this site that has also produced print issues is the Mortgage Bulletin. The print edition has info on Cleveland neighborhoods, but also helpful advice about lenders/mortgages/etc. for homebuyers.
  20. not if they can't find me!
  21. I've heard of this, but I don't know anything about it. Where are they moving that building and what will the new center look like?
  22. ah, so the Carter Road Bridge is the one that says Old River Road on it? And this is actually aligned to true north, which always throws me off. I usually think of our east-west streets as actually being east-west...
  23. This is the site I pictured as well, but is this south of the Carter Road Bridge? Certainly, the article could've been wrong.
  24. I also felt new life in the Square today. I walked through around 1:30 and there were people everywhere. The big new sidewalks (bring on the patio seating!) across the street from the SE quad are great and the visitor center really is inviting. The solution to the pigeons? more falcons...
