  1. ^are you talking about the Hearing & Speech Center? FYI, Circle 116 is actually Circle 118 (http://www.circle118.com/) DocBroc... I had the same conversation about the Crane Battle with a co-worker the other day! Funny stuff...

To the right is Judson Manor, a fairly upscale retirement home that also used to be a hotel (PLV was as well). There are a number of beautiful buildings along E. 107/Stokes Blvd. that were built in the 20s at the same scale. I've been on a number of tours of PLV, but have never lived in it. The units I saw were gorgeous and were priced accordingly. You'd be walking distance from the museums in University Circle, Rockefeller and Wade Parks, and from work at the Clinic. I'd definitely recommend giving it a look. The bar is open, but may have limited hours. Ask when you call for the tour!
  3. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of your world. Have the new townhomes begun yet? The ones on the east end of the site?
  4. ^Yes, I saw some building supplies in front during my run. Forgot to mention that!
  5. ^To be continued on the other CSU (non-project related) thread...
  6. Alley Townhomes are framed through floor one... nice to see this part of the development filling in. And again, it was around 6:00 and the contractors were still on the job!
  7. Sorry, no pics, but the College of Education has some steel off the ground!
  8. I've brought this up many times and I still don't think I've gotten an answer... why are there not railings on the opposite side of each platform (from CSU to Stokes Blvd.)? Do the non-RTV buses use this side of the platform? If not, the jaywalking issue could be largely addressed by closing off that option to simply "hop off" the platform and cross the street.
  9. ho-hum video from Crain's: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20081024/MULTI/810249967/1107 Yes, I will continue to time the route and otherwise scrutinize the system, as I have done over the years. I will do this because I need it to work for me and because when I advocate for use of our great transit system, I take personally the responsibility for making sure it runs smoothly in whatever role (customer, urban planner, etc.) I can. And as others have said before me, thanks again to everyone who does this as a career and especially to those of you who have been so responsive in this forum.
  10. Some perspective on how the NCB deal could impact the downtown office market: Another vacant building could further depress office market By Stan Bullard (Crain's) 4:30 am, October 27, 2008 The 21-story skyscraper that housed Ameritrust Corp. still sits empty today at East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue, 16 years after the Cleveland office market endured its last merger of megabanks. Real estate insiders expect the 31-story National City Center headquarters on the opposite corner from the Ameritrust building won't linger empty on the market as long as that long-dark structure, although the devastation for the Cleveland office market might be worse. 11. Very cool... I like it a lot: By the way Freethink, where'd you get that photo? Is that a webcam?
  12. Our very own thread on the subject: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3577.0.html
  13. While some of these issues are still forgivable (IMHO) at this early date, it still begs the question of why they were not worked out during the months of preparation/testing? I rode on Friday and this morning and waited at most lights and even ped crossings that had no peds. I also timed my trip from Public Square: - Playhouse Square: 5 minutes - E. 55th Street: 15 minutes - Cleveland Clinic: 20 minutes - Stokes Blvd: 25 minutes - E. 115th Street: 30 minutes So, in all, it was about 5 minutes behind where it should have been, but again, it's the first week, so I'm going to give them a pass. Already, I could tell that the drivers have their "docking" down better. On Friday, both RTVs I was on had a lot of trouble with this, stopping with doors half obstructed. One even had to back up because a wheelchair was trying to get off and couldn't fit where the vehicle had stopped. I agree with another poster on here that the vehicles seem smaller than expected. I was hoping for more parallel seating and wider aisles. In particular, it seems that the seats in front of the rear doors could have both faced each other, allowing for more than one bike/stroller to fit if need be and allowing more standing and exiting room. Perhaps it's not too late to change it? There are lots of bikes and strollers on this route... Another part of the system - the fare machine - has me concerned. I've only tried one (Cornell Road, westbound) and it was on Friday but it was all messed up. The buttons didn't line up with the on-screen options and the interface was very cumbersome (I hope it was just this machine). It's like it was designed for someone who's never purchased a bus pass before. And "exact change only?" Seriously? I'll leave you with the following: The scene on the #6 headed down to the big opening (this was not unusual for any time of day on the #6 during the week)... it took about 45 minutes to get from Cornell to Playhouse Square: My first official trip on the HL: And my second: Trolleys & RTVs now rule the roads (not a bus in sight, although someone forgot to tell the pavement painters that!) Playhouse Square Station:
  14. Another great post... You even got my old house and some of my friends' houses in there, but you missed my current one by a few blocks. Maybe you'll get it during your Detroit-Shoreway tour!
  15. Great stuff! Thanks for posting.
  16. It was apparently also once the Piccadilly Inn and they had some pretty big rock shows there back in the 70s. I think this little stretch of Euclid could be fantastic with a little love... but not too much love. Don't got getting crazy and tearing up those kitschy facades!
  17. Was at the event today with a bunch of other UOans (inadvertently, mind you... we just tend to gather in the same places!). Yes, a few long-winded speeches and a lot of heavy wind (MayDay's hair withstood the challenge!) and we were on our way. I'll post some pics later, but on the whole, it was an exciting day. People at work kept passing me by, saying "big day today!" and things like that... even though I really had nothing to do with the project! They just knew I was a big advocate of the Corridor and transit in general. As Doc said, there are still some kinks to be worked out (it took me about 25 minutes to get from E. 4th to Playhouse Square and back), but I'll just close with a big kudos to everyone involved for finally launching this thing!
  18. Four cranes over University Circle: Cleveland Hearing & Speech is getting some exterior treatment:
  19. That's too bad. That's good to hear, because they look pretty cheap with that current setup. Also, new banners in University Circle: Another question: is anything planned for the curved side of the kiosks at each station? Other than political stickers and scribble graffiti?
  20. Thanks for posting, but how many people intuitively check this page before heading out for a West Side Market run? I don't know what method would be better... announcing it at Tower City or W. 65th perhaps? Maybe the conductors do this when the know there's a wheelchair on board?
  21. This started on another thread, but we figured it needed a new home... I had a dream last night about Playhouse Square getting some new signage, really spicing things up and not just with cheesy "tickers" either. And today, there was a post about some new signage that was being installed! About 4 years ago, while living in Brooklyn, NY, I had a dream about Tyler Village in Cleveland. It was about people living in the buildings with the bridges over the street and a commuter rail that pulled up right behind the building. I had no idea what the buildings were called and couldn't even remember where exactly they were in the City, but when I got back in 2005, I was very happy to find out that these plans (minus the train) were well under way! Your turn...
  22. OK, we have to start a new thread or this will go on for pages. McCleveland, post those snaps when the letters are up! I'll bring my camera to the event tomorrow, so if they're up, I'll get a shot.
  23. right? come on... tell me you haven't had one.
  24. They do an inspection train with passenger rail cars? And MayDay, I can't tell if you're joking or not. I see no emoticon, so I'm inclined to take you seriously!
