Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
ooooh, I love Liquid Planet! Yes, the closing of the UC will certainly shake things up a bit. I just hope that by the time they open the new one, we've established more of a market for the Euclid Avenue shops that will open, so that they don't all close up. How much effort is being made by CSU to work with the neighborhood on developing complementary, rather than competing, retailers on/off campus? I know this was a big deal on campus at U. of Cincinnati when they redeveloped Tangeman and the central marketplace walkway through the heart of campus.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
From the Free Times: Volume 15, Issue 6 Published June 13th, 2007 Bites Heather Campbell, the chef in charge of the Fulton Bar and Grill during its last four years in business, is back on the scene. In about three weeks, Campbell, along with her sister Betsy, will unveil Dish Global Deli (1834 W. 25th St., 216.589.9700) in the petite space that for the last three years housed Opa! ?I?m excited to start serving food to the neighborhood again,? says Heather. ?I?ve been kind of out of the loop since the Fulton closed.? Modifications to the space have opened up the room, exposed the kitchen and introduced some counter space. ?We?re going for bright, colorful, funky and less intimate,? the chef adds. Described as healthy, globally minded and close to the earth, the menu items feature plenty of whole grains, fruits, veggies and meat. The soups, sides, salads and sandwiches will be available for lunch and early dinner, but also as take-out. Guests will order at the counter and take a seat. Items include curried lentils with feta and spinach, sweet and spicy soba noodles, Vegan Shmegan (wrap with black beans, tempeh, hummus and roasted peppers) and a panini made with marinated flank steak. All items are priced under $10. As far as that other place called Dish in Tremont: ?I have faith that people will be able to distinguish between two different businesses,? she says.

Cleveland: League Park
The way I see it, this is a public investment in a public facility... a park that also happens to be a historic site worthy of saving and desperately in need of renovation. Not only will this facility serve an underserved neighborhood as a community gathering place, but it will (ideally) spur other neighborhood reinvestment from private parties, home and property owners, banks (lenders), etc. Hough needs this attention and I full support it!

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Hopefully, it'll mean that we can start to talk seriously about building on those parking lots on the north side of Detroit... the sad side of the gateway to the West Side! Based on what we've seen on the other end of the W. 25th Street business corridor, old buildings of that size have a nice little niche market for office and residential tenants. With the other projects in the works on that stretch, it seems like a no brainer. I'll hold judgment on the building's desing on Euclid Avenue until after I've seen it. If it's adhering to the new zoning overlay, they'll have to have activity on the sidewalk frontage and parking in the rear.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
I would venture to say that the new road would help connect disadvantaged neighborhoods to the new job centers that are clustered around highways and the old ones that are on either end of the corridor. I don't know that I necessarily agree with the notion that we need to connect everything to the highway system and speed people around in automobiles, nor with the idea that University Circle is cut off from the region because of its distance from the highway network. However, enough people do believe these things and it has had an adverse impact on the Circle's ability to attract regional visitors and private investment. I think that the Circle will do all right without the OC, but I have started to accept that the neighborhoods along the OC route are going to continue to decline if they don't see some major public investment in the near future. The OC could spur economic development that would spin off into neighborhood revitalization. The neighborhoods are beginning to warm up to that idea.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
From Crain's: Settlement talks under way in Flats eminent domain trial By JAY MILLER 2:58 pm, June 7, 2007 The Flats East Bank eminent domain trial recessed today as the parties negotiate a settlement. Robert Stefanik, bailiff to Probate Division Judge John E. Corrigan, said this afternoon that the Wolstein Group and the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority were negotiating a settlement with a group of hold-out property owners over land the Wolstein Group hopes to acquire to build a $230 million, mixed-use development on the east bank of the Flats. More at crainscleveland.com http://www.crainscleveland.com ******** Now I'm hearing that they've settled with all but one property owner. Anyone else?

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
To the point of the article in today's PD about out-of-towners and the ECTP being an eyesore/obstacle/enigma, why doesn't the project have more "world class signage?" I had quite a few (100+) out-of-town visitors staying in the Hyatt a couple weeks back and the reviews were mixed. About half realized that it was construction progress, while the others just noticed the disarray. It's not up to the visitors to find out what's going on... we have to tell them! It's too late at this point, but we could have had banners and historic "story boards" on the avenue, displaying what Euclid was and what it will become. On the street, over the street, and in the empty storefronts... Ah well, another missed opportunity...

CLE: Downtown survival guide for visitors from near and far
And then there's this one: Euclid Avenue: The Finals Frontier Construction poses challenge for fans Tuesday, June 12, 2007 Molly Kavanaugh, Dan X. McGraw Patrick O'Donnell Plain Dealer Reporters It's not the Big Dig, but it is a Big Mess. Euclid Avenue from Public Square to University Circle won't score any points this week when thousands of visitors try to make their way around downtown Cleveland for the NBA Finals. The avenue, torn up for many blocks to make way for bus lanes, appears more like an obstacle course than a thoroughfare. Sidewalks disappear. Mazes of barrels and mesh force pedestrians to snake through work areas.. www.cleveland.com

CLE: Downtown survival guide for visitors from near and far
Good for you Sammy! (I love the sarcastic tone...) Downtown survival guide for visitors from near and far Tuesday, June 12, 2007 Sam Fulwood III Plain Dealer Reporter So the Cavaliers made the NBA Finals and you're visiting Cleveland for the first time from, say, San Antonio or Bay Village. You're a stranger in a strange land. Maybe even a little intimidated by the hoopla created by all those odd-looking people with burgundy-and-gold faces, hoisting beers and shouting "Rise up!" All you want is a ticket to the game, a secure parking space near the arena and, of course, to party with the crowd as it cheers LeBron & Crew to victory. (Surely, even rare Spurs fans are making that long journey to Cleveland from Texas -- or the suburbs -- to WITNESS the King on his home court.) Still, you outlanders might be more than a tad overwhelmed. Well, don't fret. It's easy to navigate our city, even with all the excitement going on downtown. Here are some helpful tips... www.cleveland.com
