Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Again, I cite a conversation I had with Calabrese last year where he told me that they were working on the transit waiting area improvements. However, I've yet to see any indication that this is true. He also thought the notion of information at every stop was...yes, absurd. I would be satisfied with just the most basic info at every shelter. I can get over the regular stops not having maps/timetables, but every one should have an actual route number on it (rather than just the RTA logo) and every shelter should have a map & timetable. I think we've actually gone backwards in the past 10 years. To address your question, Lammonator, I think the number system could help, but people would balk at it. I would rather just see more information and a color-coding and logo system similar to Portland's Tri-Met system.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
By "active," I meant a storefront with people going in and out of it. That, and they'll probably have a window or two and maybe some posters with color and information. I wouldn't call the Exhibit:Cleveland windows in the May Co. and on E. 4th "active," per se, but they're still wonderful!

Hunting Valley, yes? And I don't know that the National Register has any real bearing on local developments. I believe the local landmark status is binding.

Cleveland: Stonebridge Phase 5
Loving the UO shop idea and the photoshop correcting for our missed opportunities. Has anyone had the opportunity to chat with Price/Corna about the absence of a sidewalk presence for the Flats level of this project? I'd like to hear their opinions on the matter...

I'm assuming the Barkley Marine Building is one of those 1-2 story commercial/industrial structures on that stretch? Nothing to lament the loss of? I think the artist formerly known as Wimwar had mentioned this project earlier. Who's got more details?

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
In regard to the NOACA article posted above, I don't know if I was more surprised to find out that they didn't plan based on regional impacts already or that they were going to start doing so. The combination of this "revelation" and the new leadership at ODOT should give good ol' urbanism a much fairer shot in forthcoming transportation developments.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I was wondering what the snow clearance strategy would be for the Silver Line. I had this brief fantasy that they'd install heating devices beneath the pavement to ensure that the lane would never be snowy/slippery. Considering the "value engineering" that the ECTP has gone through, I doubt this was ever seriously considered. I would imagine, though, that clearing Euclid in the future will be somewhat different from clearing your average Cleveland street. There will be raised bumps between the bus lane and the open lane, plus there are medians that weave in and out. It'll be interesting and I hope that someone thought it out ahead of time! On the MTA issue, I remember the big blizzard in February 2003 over Valentine's Day that pretty much shut down the city. I still had to go into work and took the C from Lafayette in Fort Greene to Jay Street and transferred to the F. I remember delays and snow in the stations (from the sidewalk grates above), but it wasn't all that bad. The worst it ever got was during a huge rain storm when there was flooding everywhere. That was one of my worst transit days of all time. I even had to pay twice because the friggin MTA people didn't believe me that I'd been detoured from one station to another without getting a damned receipt.

Cleveland: Stonebridge Phase 5
Yes, ewww, but that garage was already there and they built on top of it. When you're starting fresh, you should definitely have more foresight than that! Especially if you're trying to establish your development as part of a "neighborhood." Glass block = ewwww. That stuff is for showers and basements.

Fantastic! A nice marquee and an active sidewalk/storefront should do wonders for the transition from Euclid/E. 4th to Public Square.

That place is super fancy (and delicious) and there's another place a few stalls south (towards Lorain) that has some kick-ass pies & quiches at much more modest prices, fyi!

Cleveland: Tyler Village
^ Wow! That would be great! Crust & Crumbs is a great cafe/bakery and would fare far better in a more visible spot like E. 36th & Superior...in my opinion. Their current spot is pretty cool, but it's really tucked away back in the warehouses. Interestingly, Graystone owns both of these properties...

Parkside Dwellings isn't going anywhere. The owners have put a ton of money into it and it's entirely leased out, with the exception of a gorgeous 2-story penthouse. I am in full agreement with the shouts for preservation posted previously on this thread. What kind of message do we want to send to our new generations of students? That we have a throwaway society where history and resource maximization are disposable? This is a bad move for a whole host of reasons. Spending a little extra will get us a lot more in return...

Finally hit up the Corner Alley the other night...Sunday, post-Cavs game and the place was pretty busy. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a lane at about 8:00 and spent two hours bowling with our group of 7. I bowled poorly, as usual, but it was fun! One complaint...apparently, the bowler can't change the channel of the tv above their lane... I had to watch Extreme Home Makeover and NASCAR highlights for about a half-hour! On the whole, a great time. My five friends from Philly (staying at the Residence Inn, next door) thought it was pretty rad too. And they treated, so the dollars were all from out of state! Just doing my part...

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Finally went to Snickers the other night. The Crazy Mac was delicious, but I chose to enjoy it at the original restaurant, as Cheddars looked a little barren. I'm happy to report, though, that Snickers was pretty full and that Cheddars had about 10 diners when we left around 10:00.

Yes, there would have to be legislation passed to add the ROW to the parcel. They recently did this at E. 107th & Carnegie, directly east of the Tudor Arms. I can see this being beneficial elsewhere on Chester as development occurs, but I'm not all that concerned about it in this case. It's a busy street and these are residential units. And consider that Beacon Place across the street added that ridiculous frontage road to their development. Now THAT was a bad move!

Are we sure that MTS wasn't referring to the plank in front of the house that is still under construction? I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was being sarcastic and forgot to utilize an emoticon! Thanks for posting the additional photos, Jim!

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Well, it doesn't need to be right up to the sidewalk to make it work. There just has to be an environment in front of the building that encourages activity and use...unlike the existing building. I'd like to see at least part of it come up to the sidewalk, but I wouldn't mind a set-back with an interesting plaza in front at a key point. From the looks of this, it's going to look like a forced effort at something "unique," with little substantial architectural detail. Of course, this is just a massing concept, so I'm going to try to keep my panties sorted for now...

the site plan follows the parcel boundaries. I don't know if they tried to bump out the property line, but it appears that they will just go with the existing line, which is the same as the shape of the original Madonna Hall. What is odd is that Chester was carved through the existing urban fabric in this way... Madonna Hall was there before Chester, after all!
