  1. #2 Pope, you are correct! These are the steps leading up to the building from Euclid & East Boulevard...a very high profile intersection, which is why they decided to make this beeeeeautiful entry to the building! Which means that Wimwar, you are incorrect... sorry, please pay again. #1 Musky, nice try.
  2. I'll reward myself with a couple new ones: 1 2
  3. Correct again! It's the result of Euclid being THE thoroughfare through Univ. Circle, whereas west of E. 105th, you have parallel avenues like Chester, Cedar, Superior, Hough, St. Clair, and so on...
  4. Correct!
  5. I've been down in the neighborhood on the weekends to go to Lucky's and the new farmers market on Starkweather & Professor (it's great!) with my dog & ladyfriend. Starkweather is closed off east of Thurman and I believe that W. 7th is closed off as well. There's lots of site work going on...streets, utilities, etc. on the main site and one of the larger buildings is now above ground on the south side of Starkweather. I believe this is the management & community center. I wasn't able to sneak around, as I had my uncooperative pup with me, but I will do soon!
  6. I got the same impression jogging around the site last week... the sidewalk level is given over to the parking garage and the 2nd floor actually juts out over it. I just hope the old building next door, with the retail establishment (still no clues?) helps make up for it.
  7. I don't think this has been posted here yet. It's an aerial rendering from the University Circle area. The buses aren't going to be so patriotic, but everything else is pretty accurate!
  8. There are conversations with all of the key UC partners involving East Cleveland and development opportunities along the Euclid Corridor and beyond. They understand the value of strengthening East Cleveland and the potential it has as a logical place to grow into, especially with the Corridor project nearing completion. The townhomes look great. They're really decked out and as the article mentions, that's the standard. They're not so-so with optional upgrades. The upgrades are built in. You can go beyond them, but they're really very posh as is! Another drip in the bucket!
  9. Progress on the upper floors!
  10. This is happening in some of the more "spendy" building projects around the world (there seems to be an example in every issue of Metropolis Magazine), but you're right. It should become more of the norm. I guess it's about being forward thinking... doing the things that will make your building more sustainable, environmentally and financially, in the long run. A big part of that is marketability. If you can advertise your building as LEED platinum or "high performance," I think that's going to mean a lot more market share in the future. People are going to know what that means for their company's image...and their bottom line. Also, there should be more incentives (tax credits, loan packages, etc.) to develop buildings this way in the short-term, until the market takes it to the next level.
  11. I'm glad he's all about his Cleveland bars, but it's really not that difficult to find cozy dive bars in Manhattan. Or to just hop over the East River and find 'em in Brooklyn or Queens. Still, I'd prefer to be in one in Cleveland!

But look at that picture! It's like a big roof over the river and valley! Four bridges over that small stretch of land??? Come on! On another note, with all this talk of "iconic" this and "landmark" that, don't you think it's time that we revived the landmark status of one of our existing bridges by getting ODOT or the City or whomever to light the guardians of transportation on the Hope Memorial Bridge??? For Pete's sake! The little things that make a difference get overlooked while we talk in intervals of tens of millions of dollars for a project that won't be finished until 2018!

Seriously, how can they justify spending this much money on a product that has so little support behind it? Proctor isn't happy, Bob Brown isn't happy and we all know that the public isn't happy! This is messed up. I can think of quite a few things I'd rather spend the $500 mil on!
  14. thanks for the clarification Wim. and you'll just have to ask Tim! Maybe he heard that your sister-in-law moved to the street and that she spends approximately 5% of her annual household income on shoes! That's buying power, baby!
  15. Alert! Alert! New retail coming to Ohio City! That's right, if you haven't noticed already, there have been a few new vacancies along W. 25th, north of Bridge. The Asian food store closed up and vacated after a short tenure (I think they sold two bags of rice and some trail mix while they were there) and the frame shop that was linked with Near West Woodworks had also moved out. This made for a sad little situation in some of the nicer storefronts on W. 25th, bracketing Opa. Well, in the past week, I've seen two new signs in windows...one for a store called The Monastery and the other for Timz Ladies Shoes (or shoes for ladies...I can't remember). So, the monastery... goth wear? leather? church decor? Nope! I can't remember exactly what the sign says, but it's something about culinary creations. And Timz Ladies Shoes...well, I'm assuming they'll be selling shoes for ladies. But what kind? Are we looking at pay-less, the shoe department, DSW? Or are we talking a cute little boutique? We shall see! One last note, Fit now has its signs painted on its windows in the old Metro Joe's spot on Bridge, across from the library...and they're open for business! Anyone need a personal trainer?
  16. well, i hope you're right, because this just looks tacky to me right now
  17. Is this the Swingo's that used to be near CSU?
  18. lookin good! do they need someone to test out the lanes? I'm game!
  19. I know it's waaay to early to judge based on the renderings I've seen, but theirs was my least favorite of the early designs. I don't know who the commissioners have advising them on these things, but I really hope it's not just the three commishes sitting in a room looking at pictures.
  20. Yum...that Melt sounds fantastic! And happy hours are back on Fulton... I'm there! So, our trip to Lola was fun. The place is just exciting and it makes E. 4th all the more so. I believe Social Distortion was playing at the HoB last night, so there were punk rockers of all ages walking up and down the street, as well as fancy dressed up folks (like me and my lady) heading to Lola. Nice contrast, to say the least...the spice o life! This is the stuff that makes cities tick. There's got to be a reason for everyone to be there. Anyway, the bar was beautiful, the wine was delicious, the place was bumping, there were plenty of people who came in with booked reservations, but there were lots of walk-ins as well. The wait was around 30 mins or so. We were there from 7:00 to 10:30 and the place never seemed to slow down! The service was great...very chatty, which we like. The bread and appetizers were deilcious (heirloom tomato for me and lobster corn dogs for the lady). They brought out Salmon parfait (I think) from the kitchen in little shooters after we were done with our appetizers. I don't eat meat, so I can't comment on personal taste, but I know my girl liked it! We had Lola Fries, which were perfectly crispy & savory, and two entrees. I had the "Veggie" risotto, tofu & butternut squash & my girl had the halibut. She loved hers, but I was a little disappointed in mine. The tofu was clearly the largest part of the dish, when it really should've been very minimal. Why? Because tofu's cheap and it doesn't have much taste unless you seriously marinate it, fry it or bake it. They seasoned the top, but the rest was bland. The squash & risotto were tasty, but were much smaller than the big "filets" of tofu. So, no, not worth $22. Dessert (amaretto cheesecake & lemon merengue) was also delicious, but I've gotta say that the cheesecake was also a little devoid of flavor. I know this may have been an intentional way to get the sorbet to stand out, but come on...cheesecake should be rich with flavor! So, again, a little disappointed there. My overall assessment is that the decor and feel of the place are worth the price, but that the food...or at least the vegetarian dishes that I had...could do for a bit of polishing up. Maybe mr. Symon just doesn't have much experience with tofu. Well, scrap it and make me some mac & cheese then! I'll certainly go back, but likely just for drinks and sides.
  21. Wow, great interview with Ellen! Everything she said makes perfect sense. I hope lots of people who are on the fence see this... it's not pie-in-the-sky folks!
  22. What this house needs is another front page murder to get things rolling again.
  23. I see that dude around all the time. Has he been at these meetings? Anyone from Kucinich's camp?
