  1. Well, the best news coming out of that conversation appears to be that a private businessman with as much clout as Stark is down with rail development and has ideas about how to make it work fiscally. Money talks and if a group of progressive entrepreneurs can add it all up and make cents (I'm really on today!) of the finances, that's probably our best bet for bringing this to reality.
  2. PBL? I doubt that would substantiall impact users of the 120th Street station. Sounds like a load of bull to me! Now, the new dorms...that makes some sense.
  3. Just had a walk-through with Wimwar of both the rec center and the Fenn lobby. I was very impressed with both! We weren't allowed to go upstairs in Fenn, but they let us walk around the rec center as we pleased. I'm looking forward to taking advantage of those facilities even moreso after walking through! Very nice!
  4. I heard that there would be a Pret a Manger, Camper, Dewey's Coffee, Marc Jacobs, Muji, and Cleveland's very own outpost of Other Music...all fronting Euclid between Public Square and E. 6th Street...within the next 60 days. Sorry, was that too cruel? You asked for unsubstantiated and wildly speculative!
  5. doable indeed! but I would be suprised to see a Pesht TIF that went solely towards this rail line. That's not to say that a huge chunk of it couldn't be used as matching dollars for Federal or State funding, but I would assume that a lot of the $$$ would be directed towards improvements Downtown...or more likely, towards relocating the Port. Am I off track here? (can I compliment myself on that pun? :-P)
  6. I like it. Is that painted on? I know this totally ignores the notion of "fitting within the budget," but what about something like the above that operates as a ticker? The "Euclid Ave" would be scrolling along with historical text about the avenue: "Millionaire's Row," "The Greatest Street in America," etc. Or just with current information...time, weather, etc. Another idea I had was that a much simpler light display could anounce when the next train was coming. It would be just for fun, as no passenger trains stop here these days, but it could be really exciting... There would be a general display on at all times, but about 1 minute before a ginormous freight train passes over, the bridge would light up with "CHOO! CHOO!" and blinking and movement and maybe even a couple steam pipes could emit some faux engine steam! I don't know...just thinking off the cuff here.
  7. Sounds like a man I could get along with! And then there's this quote: "There's the whole East Side-West Side thing, too, which splits retailers a bit as to where they might place their store." I know! How about in the middle! A Whole Foods at Cedar Center is hardly a triumph for the region. A Whole Foods Downtown would be.
  8. I'll bring my shovel if that would help get things started!
  9. thanks for posting that. I was looking at aerials earlier and this was where I figured it would be. what does the current building look like? is it something worth saving? what could a potential future use be? a recent conversation with a Howard Hanna rep led me to believe that there are some significant rehab opportunities down by Metro... perhaps the brick building in the foreground of MayDay's photos is one?
  10. man, a restaurant on the Square? what a crazy idea! there are spaces on both corners of the Terminal Tower, if memory serves...
  11. it better glow! everything in that place should be 100% fantastic when it opens. I can't wait!
  12. i'm a failure and I'm never visiting this thread again...
  13. very nice...thanks! I'm glad that there is attention paid to an indoor/outdoor orientation and that this thing isn't totally insular. It's nice to see that the architect acknowledged the fantastic views and that it's nice to be exercising indoors with a view of the outside world. Especially when it's snowing and you really shouldn't be biking around for a workout! Now, I've gotta get motivated to use this facility!
  14. maybe the I love you tagger is from Cleve-o? I believe this same guy/gal has tagged "show me love Cleveland" and "I love Cleveland" around Ohio City. Anyone else spotted anything?
  15. Just taking a couple shots here: 1) Mather Memorial Building? 2) Old Stone Church? 3) St. Johns? 4) Federal Reserve? 5) Key Tower?
  16. Yes, I'm aware that it's easier to walk up Coltman or E. 119th to get to Little Italy. I just wanted to show the old bridge on E. 117th! Also, in regard to KJP's comment about the N/S/E/W orientation, with Euclid turning a bit askew through the circle, it's always very disorienting to say that it runs East-West, but that's how we refer to it over here. So, by that rationale, Mayfield is running North-South, even though it is almost truly running East-West. Strange, huh?
  17. yeah, I know, buckeye1 was really fiending, though, and I'd just uploaded this shot!
  18. If there is another similar thread, I couldn't find it! (excerpted from the PD) Boardwalk Cafe is a lakeside treat Wednesday, August 16, 2006 Andrea's Boardwalk Cafe has opened inside the luxury apartment complex Quay 55, the renovated 1929 Nicholson Cleveland Terminal building located along North Marginal Road in Cleveland. Owner Andrea Barnhart, with help from her sister, Pam, offers a selection of light fare including salads, roast beef, chicken, veggie, turkey, BLT and tuna salad sandwiches, all on either ciabatta, multigrain or Old World Italian breads. For dessert there's ice cream, cakes, cheesecakes, gourmet coffees, frappes and smoothies. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
  19. Now, from E. 120th Street Station, west of the RR bridge, along E. 117th towards Mayfield... ...You come across this beauty...a remnant of decades passed...this bridge used to guide rail cars into the Model T factory that now houses CIA's McCullough Center: Wouldn't it be sweet if this could be incorporated into a new station and development? Next, we arrive at the north side of the Mayfield Road bridge... Looking south towards Little Italy: Standing on the west side: Now, on the east...at least this underpass has some room for light to peep in. Still, at night? Looking east across Mayfield towards E. 119th Street on the south (Little Italy) side of the bridge: Looking back north towards University Circle from the same side:
  20. Let's start with E. 120th Street Station: The only access point, at the foot of Coltman Road, on the southeast corner of the massive bridge overpass: The intimidating view looking west...this is what you have to walk through to get to University Circle: And if you happen to be approaching from the west and UC, where the hell is the station??? Another intimidating walk...and this is mid-day folks! Yum!
  21. First, to give you a sense of what an intact block of East Boulevard looks like: Just south of Superior on East Boulevard: Some of the most atrocious public housing design I've ever seen: The block in question - south of Wade Park on East Boulevard - begins with this beauty... the power's on and we're thinking she may be salvageable! Broken windows spells trouble for these three: She stays: The view across the park: Down below, the always popular tennis courts and some tailgating! Turning the corner on E. 105th, directly across from the VA's entrance: The VA...wait, are we in Brecksville or Glenville? Do they do anything other than provide parking for veterans???
  22. You let us know! I'm glad I didn't waste a trip over there today...
