  1. ^Those factors are likely true of Stark's situation, but I think he was also pressing for a broadened footprint for the project, which would have included demo-ing more existing buildings (such as the old Commodore Hotel) than Case or UCI wanted. He probably met with opposition, realized he couldn't do things his way, and decided to let it go. I'm sure he's still paying attention, though!
  2. From what I gather, the major issue right now is not opposition from the community, but rather constraints that exist because of the Norfolk Southern tracks that run parallel to the RTA tracks. Basically, this would make construction of a station that would "bridge the gap" between the east and west sides of the railroad overpasses very difficult, if not impossible. When you add a busy street passing under, such as Euclid or Mayfield, the situation becomes even more complex. This is one reason why I've heard that they would consider relocating it somewhere between the two and linking it up to the proposed University Arts and Retail District. I'm not particularly thrilled about this because of the forgone visibility that they could get by building at Mayfield, but the current station is built like a secret bunker, so it would certainly be an improvement upon that one, as long as it's actually linked to the new development and not accessibly only from E. 119th Street. My impression is that this station would be located near the bend in E. 117th Street.
  3. Well, Straphanger was the first to get it, but as he stated in the post, he's breaking the rules...and Wimwar was the next to guess correctly, so now he gets to post the next pic! By the way, the alley is called Cook Lane and it could potentially be the site of an exciting new development. Mum's the word, though!
  4. From CNDC's Infomail: http://cndc2.org/documents/AUGUSTNEWSLETTER_000.pdf CMHA PLANS PARK IN OHIO CITY The Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority could create within a year the first public park in Cleveland overlooking the Cuyahoga Valley and the City skyline. For years, CMHA dreamed of building a mixedincome, high-rise apartment complex on the 17.3 acre property in question, located off West 25th Street in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. Aside from an address just south of the landmark Detroit-Superior (Veterans Memorial) Bridge, the land boasts the skyline view made famous in a 1928 photograph by Margaret Bourke-White, which shows a smoke-shrouded Terminal Tower under construction. But having decided it would cost too much to stabilize the land, which is sliding slowly downhill toward the Cuyahoga River, the housing authority now wants to turn the site into a park. “It’s the best use of the land since we can’t build housing,” said George Phillips, the CMHA director. “There’s a definite lack of open space in Ohio City. It offers some of the best unobstructed views of the skyline in Cleveland. I think it would be a fantastic park. Phillips said he would launch a planning process for the park that will involve community residents, city planners and Ohio City New West Development Corporation.
  5. All the news that's fit to print about the Riverview HOPE VI project has been compiled here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2492.270 By the way, there are NO PLANS to demolish the towers. The demo of several low-rise structures that surrounded the towers took place in the late-1990s (I believe). The new housing was supposed to be built on that land, which is now grass and is being studied for redevelopment as a park (more to come). Check out the above link for more on where the housing part of the project stands.
  6. Adverse market conditions? F- that... every market study I've seen, dating back to the 70s, has shown winning market conditions. Still, it's 2006 and it's all still "on paper." I'll keep my ear out for more as well...
  7. ^And the VA label is on top of the Cleveland Institute of Music. Good map, chaps! I'm glad to see this stuff getting publicity, because there really is a lot of momentum behind them.
  8. Great news! This one's been flying under the radar to this point, but it's the type of stuff that we need to see spinning off throughout Downtown and the rest of the city.

well, I think these are the moves that will ensure us a spot in the NBA Finals next year. Reghi and Duncan were definitely the weakest spots in the lineup. These are certainly more pressing issues than re-signing Drew Gooden or letting Flip Murray sign with Detroit!
  10. I'm seeing only one reference to an "entry" and one lobby on the floor plan diagram...and it's in the rear, next to the driveway. This is a huge problem for UC institutions (poorly designed entry areas that pay very little mind to their surroundings) and I would hope that a $200 million renovation could do better to address it!
  11. I get it...I just don't like it!
  12. To piggy-back off of Riverviewer (http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=9963.0 ), I'll start by reposting the stumper. Whoever gets it has to post the next photo...and that's how the game works!
  13. Well, you just gave it away, didn't you?! I like your idea of posting one at a time better... I'm going to update my thread.
  14. Pretty good so far! #6 seems to be stumping people...good! #9 is, indeed on Fairhill, east of MLK. I believe it's called Fairhill Village. They were built in 1930 and one recently sold for over $630k! #5 is, as two of you correctly guessed, in the other Little Italy. West 69th, to be exact.
  15. I've got a lot of random shots lying around and I figured I'd make them into a sort of "where's this?" photo thread. Though recent photo posts put my camera-work to shame (thanks a lot MayDay & Clevelumbus!), I figured this could be a fun venue for posting random shots that aren't clearly identifiable. Sorry, I have no prizes for correct guesses, but you'll win my respect and admiration if you haven't already! #1 - My most recent avatar: #2 - What station is this? #3 - This one may be too easy, but I like the odd angles and density: #4 - Similar to the last one, but less dense and more hilly: #5 - Two more versions of density: #6 - Old timey: #7 - For rent: #8 - Put your horsies here: #9 - Some of the most expensive homes in the City of Cleveland #10 - I would presume this space is also available for rent!

Wow, fantastic shots! My fave is the one of the 515 garage with the reflection...you got mad skillz! Definitely one of the best, most variegated photo posts in some time! About to check out #2...
  17. These are from last week. MayDay posted similar ones on some other thread (poo poo to you!). The rear building at CIM: The front: CMA, east wing expansion: By the way, I've been looking at the renderings recently and am noticing that the side of this building will be somewhere between the stripes of the 1971 Breuer addition and the stripeless original building. Why? I don't really know. I was hoping for more glass & steel... Also, does anyone know if they will be reopening the original main entrance on the front of the building as part of this renovation and expansion? I find it particularly offensive that the "main" entrance is in the rear, by the parking garages! Now, if part of this expansion included a very bold, progressive move towards creating a better entrance fronting Wade Oval, then I might be more accepting of using the back door as the front door. I don't think that's part of the plan, though...

This was the scene over a week ago. I thought the pile was getting smaller, but they've since added some mattresses and other assorted scrap to the mound!
  19. First, Mayor Rawson was on NPR this week, talking about some huge upswing in estate tax income. I can't recall the details in particular, but it's significant enough that they're talking about moving forward with some big initiatives...namely, bike & hike trails, other amenity improvements and projects like this. Next, an aerial of the site from the May/June Shaker Life:

but it could be! I don't know what the constraints are in the Reserve Sq. building, but it's amazing what a chunk of money & a good architect can do with a lackluster space! Again, this is VERY WISHFUL thinking...I'm sure they don't have the income or population numbers they'd need to move in over there...yet!
  21. Well, I wouldn't exactly say he "mowed" them down... Papi and Manny both hit bombs deep to the outfield. Mirabeli...well, he didn't do so well. I say we start a new trend in baseball. It's called the 1-2 closer punch. We'll use Carmona to get the first two outs and then put in Betancourt/Davis/Cabrera to close it out. Carmona actually did mow down hitters number 1 and 2 the other night, before falling to pieces... Whaddya say? Could it work?

Looks like there's some heavy duty work going on at the base of the northeast corner of the westernmost building. I can't say for certain what this is, but presume that it could have something to do with expanding retail? Could this be the grocery store making its push? On that note, who operates this grocery? What if they could get someone like Trader Joe's to come in and take over? I understand that some TJ's are much smaller than $30k, but to be at the epicenter of an expanding residential node could entice them, no? This is probably wishful thinking, considering that they may have an opportunity to move into something much bigger (Pesht) in the next few years... From what I can tell, they've also been working on units one at a time. They've got this construction elevator thing moving up and down the north end of the building. Anyone else have more information?
  23. Not sure if there's a better place for this... From Cleveland.com: Fifth Third Center is for sale in downtown Cleveland 1:33 p.m. (updated 1:46 p.m.) Another downtown Cleveland skyscraper is up for sale: Fifth Third Center. Paul Rubacha, principal of Ashley Capital LLC, a joint-owner of the building, confirmed to The Plain Dealer today that the 28-story building at 600 Superior Ave. is on the market. Opened in 1991 as Bank One Center, the building changed its name in 2003, when Fifth Third Bank moved its Northeast Ohio headquarters there. Bank One, the inaugural anchor tenant, moved its local offices to the Penton Building on St. Clair Avenue. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
