  1. Great post MrNYC! I agree with you on the street lighting. There are some spots Downtown that are just dark as all hell when the sun goes down! That's one of the reasons why my friends and I wanted to do the Storefront Cleveland thing...if the City wasn't going to spend money on street lights, the least we could do was get the storefronts lit up! You captured our companion's project (Exhibit Cleveland) near the top of your thread, under the "Corts" sign. They've since expanded to the May Company and 1010 Euclid, next to the Cleveland Trust Rotunda, two spots that were desperately in need of activity. Your pics of the Hyatt at the Arcade made me want to drop a Benjamin and take my lady there for a night!
  2. As Peabody certainly can attest, there's a lot of walking to the market done by neighborhood residents as well. But those parking lots are jam-packed on market days, so there's undoubtedly a large portion of market visitors who drive in. I wonder what the ratio is... On the topic, why are people so afraid of structured parking? As long as it's visible and convenient and secure (and free...), why would anyone prefer to have their car sitting out in the sun/snow/rain?
  3. That was one of my first subjects with my B&W camera. I shot the demo and developed the pics myself. I'll scan some in later! I remember how cool I thought the demo looked, but I had no idea what they were tearing down... All for a damned parking lot!

I do cringe at the thought of him making cuts across the field, but hey, he's a professional and so are his doctors and trainers!
  5. ^I agree! With the other mega lots moving forward, and the value of the land rising significantly, the pressure will be on this new owner to either pump rates up beyond acceptable levels or to improve the land. That may mean a garage (a la 515 Euclid) with a retail front and the potential for a tower or for a future sale to someone who will develop it. Either way, they'll probably make a ton of money... Fact is, Stark's grand plans are going to take years to realize, so I wouldn't go throwing in the towel just yet!
  6. From KJP's article: Plus, consider that only 33 new housing permits were issued in all of the 1980s! Much like the above number, I believe that only applies to new single-family home construction...but still!
  7. CSU press release: The new Recreation Center will open to the campus community on Monday, August 28, 2006. 8. bummer...if KJP doesn't know what's going on, nobody does!
  9. Wow...between the W. 3rd Street Bridge and E. 17th Street, you think we might need a few new good civil engineers around here? Here are some more photos from last week, all from E. 18th to E. 12th along Euclid: The aforementioned E. 17th: Sidewalk on the north side of Euclid just west of E. 12th: On the south side, in front of the Halle Building: In front of the Levin College: The view from the 3rd floor of Levin, looking east:
  10. There's no doubt that they would have to incorporate structured parking into the mix. Just as with Stark's Warehouse District plans, we'll end up with more parking in the end, but in decks and with places to live on top and places to shop on the sidewalk! My take was that the people who opposed this (the WSM merchants were the loudest) because of "density" are really just afraid of poor people. I would definitely advocate for an affordability component, but I would certainly think that some high-end condos with fantastic views could do very well here.
  11. would've put this somewhere else, but it was discussed here a few pages back: What's the deal with... The Terminal Tower Monday, July 31, 2006 The elaborate erector set capping the upperfloors of the Terminal Tower at Public Squareis not some swanky birdcage for the residentperegrine falcons; it is scaffolding, and lots ofit. The 52-floor Terminal Tower office buildingis undergoing a five-year renovation of itsfa硤e. Cleveland's grande dame is 76 yearsold and in need of a facelift. Every crack is beingrepaired and every loose stone removedand restored. - Allison Carey, Plain Dealer reporter
  12. was that behind the Police Department on Payne? That's a beaut...why wasn't it saved?
  13. BTW, has anyone else heard that GLBC will be taking over the wine bar on Market Ave. when their lease expires?
  14. The majority of that lot is owned by the City of Cleveland and about a third of it is owned by Great Lakes. If we were to develop just the City-owned lots in Ohio City, we'd have a different neighborhood. We're talking about the West Side Market lots and this little lot on W. 26th in particular. Add to that all the other publicly-owned lots in the neighborhood (CMHA, Cuyahoga Cty, etc.) and then we'd really be moving!
  15. it would take a thread about decorating for people to get all bitchy about! :-D
  16. ^Well, I doubt a Jew would send their kid to Catholic school, but that's besides the point. 4 in 10 Ignatius students receive financial aid, which last year totaled $3.1 million. So, I think if Jesus had wanted to attend and had kept his grades up in junior high, he would've had options!
  17. seriously...we want the dirt or the goods or what have you! I know she's the style editor and she admitted that the finances of getting these projects and tenants here isn't her bag, but seriously, some of these places would be a challenge. Perhaps a challenge that Stark, et al can rise to meet?
  18. nice shots Musky! I can't wait to check the place out! Not that I'll actually use it, though...
  19. ^I believe the SI student center expansion has already begun.
  20. words of wisdom from wimwar
  21. Could I be right that all of this is good news coming from the Federal Government? From the July 25th APA Advocate: Transportation, HUD Spending Bill Approved by Senate Committee AMTRAK, CDBG PROGRAMS GET FUNDING BOOST On July 20 the Senate Appropriations Committee approved the Transportation, Treasury, Judiciary, HUD, and Related Agencies (TTHUD) appropriations bill for fiscal year 2007. The Senate's bill would provide $140.7 billion, which is $1.9 billion more than the administration requested and $1 billion more than the House. Included in the bill was $39.1 billion for highway programs, $36.6 billion for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and $8.8 billion for the Federal Transit Administration. Below are some of the highlights broken down by agency. The bill must now go to the full Senate and then be reconciled with the spending bill previously approved by the House. The full Senate is not expected to consider the TTHUD bill until sometime after the upcoming August recess. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 8 tenant-based assistance is funded at $15.9 billion, the same as the budget request and $502 million over the FY06 level. Section 8 project-based assistance is funded at $5.7 billion, about $638 million above the FY06 level and the same as the budget request. Revitalization of Distressed Public Housing (HOPE VI): The bill includes $100 million for HOPE VI, approximately the same as the FY06 level and an increase of $100 million over the budget request that recommended elimination of the program. The bill also extends the authorization of the program through FY07. Community Development Fund (CDF): The bill includes $4.2 billion for the CDF, an increase of $37.2 million above the FY06 level and $1.2 billion over the budget request. The bill includes $4.1 billion for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration ($1.59 billion): This amount is $84 million above the FY06 enacted level and $510,000 above the administration's request. Of these funds, $1.4 billion is for Amtrak, $106 million more than FY06. Federal Transit Administration ($8.8 billion): This amount is $342 million above the FY06 enacted level and consistent with the administration's request. The following programs are funded through the Federal Transit Administration: formula grants, transit planning, and research; rural transportation assistance; metropolitan, state, and national planning; capital investment grants; fixed guideway modernization; New Starts program; buses and bus-related facilities; and job access and reverse commute grants.
  22. not to be a stick in the mud, but was it really necessary for such a large portion of the sidewalk frontage on the new Rec Center to be bricked over and windowless??? Just a little peeved about that right now!
  23. A little shuffling (From Crain's): Edward Howard will bid farewell to IMG spot for Superior space By STAN BULLARD 6:00 am, July 24, 2006 Needing more space and seeking a chance to redo its offices, Edward Howard & Co. plans to move by December to the 1100 Superior Building in downtown Cleveland from IMG Center. The public relations firm has leased 17,000 square feet on the 16th floor of 1100 Superior. That’s 20% more office space than it occupies on IMG’s seventh floor at 1360 E. Ninth St., said Kathy Obert, Edward Howard chairwoman and CEO. The high profile firm’s current lease at IMG expires at year-end. “It’s not dramatically more space,” Ms. Obert said, but the firm selected 1100 Superior because of a renovation to the one-time Diamond Building and a more efficient layout for its 35-person Cleveland headquarters. Neither she nor 1100 Superior manager Mark Ferris would disclose the rent. Ms. Obert said the move was “not a cost-driven decision” as broker Trammell Crow Co. had found it less-expensive downtown options. Ms. Obert said the new space Vocon Design Inc. of Cleveland is preparing will feature private offices that allow for “serious work” related to matters such as initial public offerings, but it also will be designed to encourage creativity, reflecting the firm’s role in crafting new brands. Wayne Hill, Edward Howard president, said the new office reflects the youthful spirit of its staff. “We’ll have a lot more light,” he said, due to the office using lighter woods and glass walls.

last time I was there they had a display set up, but no "office." It could have changed! I'm pretty sure that one of the Priemers, (Gordon Priemer heads Heartland) had a lot to do with Bier Markt. Correct me if I'm wrong!
  25. ^that, to me, would seem to be a waste of valuable Downtown real estate. Just throwing out some ideas here: Say we have an empty convention center... what if we redeveloped it as a mega residential amenity with fitness center, movie theaters and live performance spaces, community meeting spaces, and so on...unparallelled in the region...to really anchor Downtown as a residential neighborhood. In conjunction with that, we'd have to develop the County's current location as high rise housing and really focus on building more dense residential blocks east of Erieview and north of the RR tracks. That, or we could listen to what FC has planned for it. Didn't they mention that they'd been discussing possible future uses for it and sounded pretty optimistic about its future? I'm sure it's somewhere in here...
