  1. Great thread! I haven't been down there in ages... I really appreciate all the close-ups of the buildings with planters and new paint jobs. I actually kinda miss the place!
  2. We're gonna snog ya down by the Cuyahoga.
  3. Looks like all the atrium's new glass sunlight has been installed. Any word on a tenant yet? I remember hearing a few months back that it's leased up already!
  4. I noticed work on the north side of Detroit in the building next to Linda's Superette, but nothing in the larger building on the south side of the street next to the soon-to-be construction site. I, too, am a planning nerd who passes by there almost daily and I hadn't noticed a thing! (Maybe it's because I'm always too preoccupied with keeping my bike's tires out of piles of broken glass on the street...) I'm also excited to see what kind of retail tenants they can bring into the new building. This could be the first big new construction project on Detroit that starts to bridge the gap between W. 25th and Gordon Square!
  5. Nice shots! Getting me excited for my trip to Pitt in a week! We're gonna go out on a friend's boat and do that three rivers thing!
  6. By the way, I actually received a notice for this meeting in the mail yesterday...a full 12 days before the event!!!
  7. Great response, KJP. So, if the equity from the bridge right-of-way is used once, that's it? What are the possibilities of doing this from Downtown without using that equity? Should I just re-read the other thread? ODOT should be a major player in rail development throughout Ohio, but they aren't (correct me if I'm wrong!). RTA should be actively pursuing this, but they aren't (correct me if I'm wrong!). Who's talking about this? RTA's 2010 and 2025 long term plans both place rail expansion high on their list, but they don't seem to be pushing for any of it. NOACA? Where are they? And the difficulty of making this happen with the approaches and the underground stations and all that...well, that's where the engineers can come in and re-establish themselves as our allies. It's possible, so find a way to make it happen. Don't just feed us the results that ODOT wants you to!
  8. Is this news? There have been lakefront plans stating the need to develop this area for decades! I guess the news is that Jackson is "making this a priority" or something. I'll say one other thing...I rode my bike along the North Marginal, past the crowds who were congregating for the Grand Prix a couple weeks ago and there were just tons of people walking from North Coast Harbor to the various festival entrances at Burke. And let's face it...racing fans are not known for their desire to walk from place to place...but this was happening! And how many of us have been down there for Browns games? The place is flooded with pedestrians and there are really no options for a place to stop in a grab a bite or a t-shirt or other tourist item without going into one of a few big facilities. At the very least, they need to line the pier with tents and booths during the summer months...get people down there shopping and eating and mulling around, instead of just heading to the destination and then back to the car! so I guess that was more than one other thing...
  9. This is positive: From Cool Cleveland: ...four Ohio City businesses are pitching in to hire 2 off-duty police officers to walk the beat around the West Side Market during late night hours. Congrats to Sam McNulty, owner of McNulty’s Bier Markt, Jeff Allison, owner of the Garage Bar, Alex Gleason, owner of the Old Angle, and Mike Roman, owner of the ABC Tavern, for their initiative. Why not pop in for a drink at one of these fine establishments, and toast the owners. These are the heroes of the neighborhood, and hopefully the rest of the community will follow suit.
  10. Public Meeting on July 19th! http://www.innerbelt.org/Lakefrontwest/LakefrontFactSheet06-06.pdf
  11. Maybe I missed this somewhere else, but has anyone noticed that there are a number of old trolleys sitting below Tower City along some of the auxiliary rail segments? I was coming home on the Red Line the other night and I was up front and had the benefit of seeing the tracks ahead with headlights from the train...I noticed a set of tracks veering off to the right upon our westbound approach and saw at least a half-dozen old trolley cars in there! What's the deal???

It was a more "ad hoc" question about a specific place where I needed the rentals, but I suppose it would fit into a general transportation thread. I contacted Cleveland Bikes and Century Cycles. Cleveland Bikes suggested the OC Bike Co-Op, but they weren't opened yesterday, so I didn't hear back from them. Century Cycles does group rentals and delivery for a minimum of two hours and 15 bikes ($300, plus tax). Add more for more hours. It ends up being pretty expensive, really, but what can you expect? I guess if you can get to the shops, renting a single bike becomes more practical. Especially if you're trying to get around on the Towpath Trail down in Peninsula and hopefully someday soon up the Cuyahoga where the Bike Co-Op is located!
  13. wow, that's exciting! so, we're talking about the land directly east of the Corlett Building?
  14. Great update KJP! The response from partner developers is so positive...and it's great that they're treating each other as allies, instead of competitors...it's great to see this!

There are a number of threads on this site that have involved a discussion of density at one point or another. The issue comes up quite a bit in the planning world and more often than not, receives a less-than-warm response from neighborhood advocates and residents already living in the neighborhood that is slated for a new development. One response to such issues, Visualizing Density, was created in 2002 and was updated again in 2004. The report/presentation is available from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and can be downloaded at http://www.lincolninst.edu/pubs/workingpapers.asp where you can search for "Visualizing Density." The text of the report is quite interesting, but there are also loads of photos (200+) that depict different levels of density in a clear and concise manner. If you choose to download, skip the 2002 files and go right to the 2004 files (four of them). There's nothing from 2002 that you can't find in the 2004 files. Enjoy!
  16. It just takes so much longer to go up north that far! Thanks for the info, though, KJP!
  17. I just sent that around to my planning buddies throughout the state. We're all meeting up in Pittsburgh that weekend, though, so we won't be able to make it! Bummer...
  18. ^True, true. YSOH voiced the first concern I heard over demo of the building. (Something about being apprehensive about destroying anything built out of brick...) I can see the value in the building as a space that could be better used for offices or artists space or something more appealing than the CMHA HCV headquarters, but I don't know how it would translate into living quarters. That said, B12 does have a point in alluding to the surface lots scattered around this part of the neighborhood. The problem is site control, though. Active businesses (and the hospital) use these lots and it would be tough to gain control unless they shut down, or in the case of the hospital, built a damn garage already! So, CMHA appears to be in a pinch. Let's just hope they can either re-use some of the materials and build something of quality on the site after they demolish these buildings!
  19. Anyone know of a non-Greyhound bus alternative to NYC? Amtrak takes forever and has crap hours... Greyhound did me wrong several years ago and I'm still boycotting... I've heard there's a Chinatown bus from Asia Plaza... anyone else?

I didn't know where else to put this...(not quite a "Transportation" thread) Does anyone know of places to rent bikes in Cleveland that would be convenient to University Circle? Individual and group rentals are what I'm looking for. The only success I've had in finding rentals at all is with the Ohio City Bike Co-op and Century Cylces in Peninsula, neither of which are great for a Univ. Circle bike event!
  21. I guess this is good news...as good as we can expect right now, anyway!
  22. don't start counting those eggs just yet, KJP!
  23. What's up with a Sunday night party anyway? Whatever happened to Thursday through Saturday? Any day of the week, though, I don't need to be kept up against my will... Basically, things are much quieter here than they were in my hood in Brooklyn. There, it was primarily the car alarms that pissed me off! I agree with you, w28th. I think that Cimperman and the rest of the community should be advocating for a new tenant, not trying to discourage the place from opening up again. There are loads of respectable, profitable businesses that could take over that space and add to the neighborhood's assets. It's all about keeping up with the owner/management and assuring that they want what's best for the neighborhood, as well as their wallet. And what's this about the place opening back up in October?
