seriously...what's the count on proposed parking spaces for this project now? Wolstein et al need to seriously re-think what they're doing down here. This is not a mall in Beachwood where ALL of your customers will be driving in and looking for parking. This is a Downtown neighborhood that should be able to pull workers, residents and outsiders to the site. Driving should be an option, yes, but there will be more opportunities to ride, walk, and bike to this site than most other destinations in Northeast Ohio. And let's consider that if the developers are demanding guarantees from the County to pay the bills if the revenues don't add up, then it's obvious that they're not so confident in the ability of these garages to pay for themselves! Let's not create another Gateway garage situation here. Taxpayers should not be saddled with the cost of these unnecessary garages and the developers need to look elsewhere to figure out how these numbers can be crunched. Does anyone remember a potential partner offering to build the garages...and add more residential units...just up the hill???

Wow, very exciting! I've considered going for jobs with several developers and when I read that they're in Beachwood or Solon or something I just look right past them. Cedar Center wouldn't have been as bad as Beachwood, but the Flats West Bank is excellent!

There's lots of talk of new festivals and other programming, but I don't know of anything definitive yet. I was at the Italian garden last week and was very impressed with the bi-level fountain and the size of the whole thing. I rode my bike down East Blvd. and was wowed over and over again by all of the gardens I passed. People really need to get out there on foot and on their bikes because this place is a remarkable gem crying out for appreciation!

From what I hear, though, the RTA wants to move the station to a point between E. 120th and Mayfield...kind of midway...and have it be a part of the larger Triangle redevelopment. Not the best idea, in my mind, because it won't be as visible and the connection to Little Italy would be much less obvious/direct. I'll look forward to that article!

Yeah, I'll taken the profit margin in the first write-up! Any images out there people? Also, interesting to note that NCB is mentioned as a funding source, but not Charter One, whose Uptown Initiative aims to spur development just like this.

Pretty scary, really. If you were ever wondering why the city stinks some days...well, there's part of the answer! This pic is interesting: It looked like they were meticulously working around this former row of trees one day and the next, they were gone! Anyone know what happened to them? They were pretty large and I hope they didn't just end up in the chipper! There are some younger ones closer to E. 17th that were just hacked down and discarded...crazy.

I'm sure the new sliding windows at Flannery's will be nice, but I'm really not impressed with the new facade. Covering up all that brick? Boo!

I also walked by yesterday and noticed that the old market building has a new skylight skeleton and the walls have a few new windows, but couldn't tell much aside from that...

Yes, I love the grain silo idea...it's been done more than a couple times and in a variety of ways. I'll post my fave later... "there is a lot of merit to utilizing the idea of exposing the contrast between new and old as a dynamic design gesture. It reveals the intricacies and detail of the old (buildings, in the case of W65th & Detroit) vs. the smooth or angled of the contemporary (lighting/signals), playing off the idea of the city being a multilayered organism. This idea could be used throughout the city in a variety of different programs." Though I do think that historically appropriate fixtures would be nice in certain places, I do agree with w28th that a program like this could yield some fabulous results! I think we'd benefit a great deal from something like this and I think it could be a wonderful success (or a colossal failure, who knows?) and why not try? Cleveland Public Art, local design schools (CIA, UDC, Levin, etc) and the utility companies could run a year-long charette or competition and everyone would end up paying more attention to the little things they pass by each day. Who could complain about that?
