  1. Again, what are we going to deem as "not packed?" I do not need a study to do it, I prefer trusting my own eyes and experiences on the road. Who or what determines this criteria or carves it in stone as Gospel? Maybe I should change the word from packed to crowded. The same logic that sees this road as "not crowded" is is analogous to the logic that sees someone who is actually obese or over weight, as merely "thick" or "full figured" Even stats that determine such information about roads can greatly be connected to cultural acceptance of a certain amount of traffic on a given road. I never said it was packed all the time and in all places, but it can get packed. Or, again, should I say more than crowded enough. A third lane has alleviated some of this congestion in some areas, but it is only a matter of time before history repeats itself. If I-71 had to rely on two lanes the entire trip between Cle and Cincy, I shudder to think what it would look like. Trucks alone, as there are so many, need a lane to themselves. With sprawl in the future, does anyone really think traffic on I-71 is going to lessen? Hence another reason for the rail option. Still, there is no transportation choice in the great and diverse state of Ohio...on this most populated corridor. Its either drive or die. And this is a bit embarrassing as well as very odd. You must drive, be a part of all costs associated with vehicle ownership and dangers in driving.... or be driven in this great land of freedom of/and choice! in the year 2010. Disclaimer: "freedom of choice" applies as long as the choice is auto oriented.
  2. "Your visual interpretation of what is "packed" doesn't correspond to reality. You can't do a visual check and say the highway is congested because you see a line of vehicles." -- Sherman Cahal It certainly does correspond to reality, because the reality is that I have used this hundreds of times and my reality is..... that I more often than not see a lot of traffic, more than we need. And, as some have pointed out, it takes only one monkey wrench thrown in the engine to create full blown traffic jams on I-71. When it comes to influencing my choice of transportation mode, or whether I would want to take I-71, it takes a great study to determine whether this road gets jam packed. It does. I think experience can teach us a lot and while there are those who sit in office cubicles throwing out fancy stats, the best teacher is experience and many times when I am on and have traveled I-71, it has been full enough. I really wonder just how many times you have traveled this road and at what times because I would love to have the opportunity to personally take you on a drive to show how crowded it can get. Sure, it isn't all the time, but it happens a lot of the time. Still, no one should have to be forced to drive this corridor if they do not want to, yet need to get from city to city. Many cannot, many do not want to. Do these people not count? I thought this was supposed to be the wonderful free land of choice. Where is my freedom or choice to not have to rely on a car and I-71 to go to places within this corridor? Granted, I speak from a user perspective...and what I would find more convenient and that's all I need to do to determine my choice of transportation, because I find using this Rt. to be a hardship. What you or stats may see as not packed, others may simply see the opposite. Sorry, there is nothing you can say to have me believing that 1-71 does not have these crowded issues...OR maybe in the idea that widening it would solve them. In the long run, that would just create more problems and is like feeding a fat guy more cake when he should be on a diet in the first place. We need to go on a road diet in Ohio. KJP's post above sums it up about this insatiable road habit in Ohio, that is totally unsustainable.
  3. Nice video, but many of these videos seem to be centered around E. 4th St. and its getting old IMO. There is more to downtown than E. 4th St. that should be featured.
  4. BTW, I know this is trivial, but the FEB website is as scaled down as the current version of the project. Perhaps some details can be added about what this version of the project will actually offer....noting the park space, the boardwalk, hotel, etc.....or just something a bit more descriptive, alluring, and creative in the pitch. Maybe offering some vision of making what is now a desolate space become a pedestrian appealing place again that can re-connect people with their river, and to do such, you don't always need to have bars and eateries. Just look at Pittsburgh near PNC park and Heinz Field. Just park areas but really nice...and since this is all we will have for now, you may as well play it up a bit. Perhaps some news bits as well. I mean seriously......Look at this.... http://www.flatseast.com/ I hope some plans are to update it. When times are tough, remember to keep your flag flying!
  5. ^ I hope this theory is right about forcing re-investment. It seems that nothing is really forcing owners to re-invest right now, in properties like the Breuer Tower, which has sat empty for oh so long with the county debacle thing and now beyond that. I do think the poster makes sense in defining the difference between economic development and real estate development. I would hate to see a 9th Street corridor sit empty for too long. This is a prime downtown avenue and we cannot afford to have this looking desolate or like it is crumbling.
  6. This is a trivial bit of thought, but just beat Pittsburgh the last game. In all my years as a Browns fan, I have never witnessed such frequent boldness in Steelers followers invading the stadium and city. Maybe a lot are the typical bandwagon fan, but people living in Cleveland, etc. jumping ship to another team is one thing...BUT, to the Steelers is pathetic. I just come from the old school of thought that saw this team as the enemy to beat, not "just another game."
  7. Really!...Is this true?
  8. ^ It still has a lot of character. Great photo thread again, Clueless! These small satellite urban centers just outside of Cleveland are worthy of re-discovery as well. Great pedestrian designed town centers. I often notice how many of these we have and also take note to the fact at how currently, they are so underutilized in that respect, because cars outnumber pedestrians so much.
  9. See! I could have predicted it so easily without even reading it. I wonder if those who wrote the article have ever lived here or traveled the state corner to corner, crevice to crevice...or know anything else about it other than the fact that we, like other northern states, get a winter....a hard hit for a few weeks out of 4 months, give or take, out of the year? These lists are so pathetically predictable.
  10. Agreed mostly with this philosophy. But the defense seems to get more than its share of time on the field due to this sputtering offense and you can't have that. The Defense also needs to employ a better third down scheme and so does the offense! A coaching change will just create more delays. The impatience and instant gratification attitude of many of Browns fans has contributed much to the drought of a lifetime...because when you have to keep changing and starting all over again, more time and waiting is inevitable. On the other hand, these last two losses are really unacceptable. They are only easier to swallow if I can convince myself that both Buffalo and Cincy were the "dangerous" teams to have during the week due to the losses they have had, thus making them easy to take for granted, as they are coming out to win some games and avoid total disaster.
  11. Sorry, but I beg to differ, and this is very well a matter of perspective. I don't know how long you have lived in Ohio to witness changes on our highways.... My time being most of 42-plus years...and I have driven that route frequently too...more than most I would say, and indeed, it has often been packed. I am not quite sure what you deem as packed or not, but frequent lines of traffic, especially on what should be mostly a rural ride, looks pretty packed to me. The addition of a third lane in various parts has alleviated some of the congestion, but the congestion was there, thus creating this "need" for another lane (there are so many trucks on this route that a third lane can be used to facilitate just them alone....and take a look at the rest areas late at night, I-76 is a great example aside from I-71... as many look like truck stops with caravans of trucks lined up from beginning of exit at rest stop to end) and with poorly planned growth it is only a matter of time before the third lanes begins to fill as rampant sprawl and developing countrysides become more frequent. I also remember driving with my Father, who was a traveling sales associate, when I-71 and others were no where near the capacity of traffic seen today. ^ And, yeah, I agree with the KJP statement that a part of our problem here is the lack of long term vision. Short sightedness, on the other hand, is in great abundance.
  12. Loganberry Books, Horizontal, the one on Coventry..name anyone?, Visible Voice Books, Old Erie Street Bookstore (open by appointment only and deals in mostly hard to find books), to name a few... if they don't have it, they'll order it and the purchase is for a purpose, as you will be supporting local/independent businesses and economies. :-)
  13. I don't see many folks opting to take I-71 in the future when it is even more packed to the hilt that it is now, fuel prices escalate....all the way down south and back. We simply cannot keep going in this auto-dependent direction. That's the inconvenient truth.
  14. I have suggested that on You Tube, (to those who have Cleveland videos posted) that if you are going to promote a Cleveland video and want a positive vibe generated for the city, to just disable the comments feature because most are a myriad of extremely ignorant and un-informed posts. Worse than CDC. It is a free for all. The very least action that should be taken is moderation of the worst and ill-informed ones, and especially the profanity and terrible grammar/spelling.
  15. I just caught a glimpse of it and did not read it because I have learned to avoid these mostly ridiculous rankings, but Yahoo had an article today about "10 worst states in which to retire".... I just would guess that they had to place Ohio on that list. Did I guess correctly or not? :|
  16. Comments like that in question, and if meant literally, can be said by the ignorant whether they live in the core or in the outside of it. Ignorance has no real hardcore boundaries, but I would suspect that kind of comment come from an exurban if I had to choose A. B. or C. The video was spectacular.
  17. Agreed! We need to seek out the alternatives and take them seriously. The net, the library...many sources where what is probably more the truth can be found. We will not get it on the mainstream media boob tube today. These sources are not loyal to you and me. They are loyal to their sponsorship interests and in selling no matter the cost. Dedication to seeking out facts is another thing. "Fair and balanced" does not mean factual and accurate...and as someone once said, the press is free as long as you have the money to buy it...and the media is only as "liberal" as the conservative interests that own it. The lack of media and facts disseminated to the public is a huge reason why the vast majority of the American public is so delusional, oblivious and misled. They cannot make informed decisions when you have people altering the facts to fit their opinions, rather than altering their opinions to fit the facts. But still, no one is going to offer us up the real and valid information we need on anything these days. We've got to seek it out and not wait for someone to do it for us.
  18. The large complex and the senior housing buildings in the pictures look very cheap material wise and as though they will begin to look shabby in a short amount of time unless meticulous maintenance is given to them. The senior housing building looks horrible IMO. Euclid deserves better than this but I know...we've been over all this.
  19. I misunderstand... A theater is moving OUT of Gordon Square?
  20. A mentality brought to us by among the dumbest people in the world. ;-)
  21. Thanks!..... Does anyone have working emails for these people? I have emailed before and with no reply. Is there an ideal email address for each? I will craft a letter and send it with the important information.
  22. Interesting bit I will post below that may help clear up the Latino/Hispanic thing. It was interesting to note that according to this, "Latino" generally refers to regions once under Roman rule, while Hispanic....well, here is an excerpt.. "It is important to understand that the definition of Hispanic varies widely depending upon the source you use. Some say that “Hispanic” refers to race, but this is not true. Hispanic defines a region of origin, not a person’s race." Was Puerto Rico ever under Roman rule....Or are many of the citizens of decent from areas that were? As for the diversity thing... If any given area is mostly one or two backgrounds ( I will refrain from using the wrong references) then in my opinion, it is not very diverse. If a given neighborhood is is mostly "black"/"African American" (by the way, I have a distant Caucasian cousin born in Africa and who now lives here and is seeking citizenship so I guess he can be considered "African American?") then again, this does not exude "diversity" Just my opinion. Anyway, here is the article. http://womeninbusiness.about.com/od/businessetiquette/a/pc-hispanic.htm
  23. Has anyone in Cleveland city council heard anything as of yet? The Mayor? Who needs to be urged in Cleveland? Any definite people letters should be sent to urge them to send the support? Oh, and about that article...Yes, the blind have more vision than Johnny good 'ole boy.
  24. But there is an over glutton choice of it these days making so many highways so crowded. I find this very inconvenient being forced to drive, not being able to reduce dependency on it as I would like to here...... For me, this is very inconvenient.
