Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
I like the new bridge-scape, however, with the lack of protective fencing so far (are their plans to replace it?) their may be a safety component when some who thinks they're being cute, might get the bright idea of pitching litter like glass bottles down below... Doesn't the rapid run through below?

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Has any of the boardwalk structure started? I saw the project from Superior Viaduct and could not notice. The way the phase one project is depicted in the website, it looks like their is a long way to go to get the overall property to look like it. I hope that is all completed as the structure is completed...and the immediate surrounds cleaned up, otherwise it won't call for a nice welcoming mat into the area.

Etheostoma Caeruleum replied to CornerCurve's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionFine, but don't pin the costs on residents. I think it would take something away from the real experience. They could use this place in the Summer for three months NOW, let alone nine....for an event like World Series of Rock..and they don't. Covering it with glass will suddenly make it more appealing for such?

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
If its always about money...I ponder the question again... How much productivity is LOST when we have to sit behind a wheel paying attention to traffic, or just sitting in it? Can anyone even begin to place in dollars and cents the amount of work time LOST...which equals companies/businesses losing revenue.... I know I lose a lot of productive time. Much lost work time can be done on lap tops and with briefcases while on the trains!

Cleveland: Retail News
The May Company Building, a most prominent and attractive space on the square, sits looking filthily and with no significant retail tenant for which the building was designed. ( Just the Tri-C thing) This space should be a priority, and a great candidate for such a store, but it still sits mostly void and getting dirtier looking. I was disgusted to see that in such a building, with such a history...that a glorified bar was the best that anyone could do to utilize such a space. With more people living downtown and re-discovering it, re-learning how to actually use a downtown, and what one actually is during the decentralizing auto-oriented era, this is a great time. One more food establishment and this part of downtown is nothing more than an outdoor giant food court and a scene of people standing around smoking and pitching their butts all over the nice EC project streetscape...a great exhibition and representation of a vibrant healthy populace Cleveland, for sure. Euclid needs to be interspersed with establishments that create a functional neighborhood in a downtown appealing to stakeholders... If you live downtown, or close, you simply should not have to get in a car to go to Westlake or Beachwood for such other places found at malls. This is insane. If it continues to become all food, it will cater to mostly non-residents and sports fans. Not a diverse and stable economic example, imo, especially if we continue to rely on the success of Cleveland sports to keep it all going. That is a recipe for disaster and economic type-cast. By the way, speaking of retail..there is a lot of existing retail downtown when you look hard enough...and for guys out there who might be tired of the ripped jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, and baseball cap look.. I suggest M. Lang... prices are comparable to a Dillards and the quality is impeccable. The service is a real merchant to customer experience by someone who knows their craft. Have a drink there too... And if anyone ever saw this multi-part PBS series, it would be great to get even a tiny fraction of this diversity back downtown and on Euclid. Eventually, maybe people will unlearn the mall habit and re-learn what a downtown is for... or what could be.. (maybe never to this degree again, but maybe a shift back inwards to growing from within.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
A lot of the ridership, especially during hours when school lets out, probably sees nothing wrong with inappropriate activity that would warrant police presence, and it is a common lifestyle to some.....and so therefore, no complaints or reports get made, or, at least few. This does not mean there are not issues at many stations or that all is swell and we can sit back feel good about it. Maybe police can be a little more watchful themselves as relying on people stepping forward to report is needed, but not likely enough to generate any necessary more pro-active presences by officers.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
I was downtown today and wondered what those looooong lines were all about!!! At first, I thought maybe they were awaiting to visit the grand, opulent, classic, classy, historic Higbee Building which now houses the austere and prominent "legend" Horseshoe Casino.... such a great renovation and added touch of class downtown. But wait!!! (tires screeching on the bike) I honed in to take a closer look at the folks waiting in the line and thought to myself.. "This cannot be the crowds awaiting to visit the casino.....Noooo".... This crowd is about one of a few possible things... 1. A new branch of the county welfare department opened up near Public Square and was handing out grand opening freebies like cigarettes or perhaps food stamps.... 2. A new Wal-Mart opened on the Higbee Building's upper floors... or possibly 3. Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centers was hosting their annual convention at Tower City! Pheewww... thank goodness! I am so glad that crowd must have been there for one of those three things and NOT the grand casino!!! Wow! That crowd was far skankier than any bus stop 3: 00 PM crowd I have ever witnessed! Oh... and all the police, security, ambassadors and all.....Glad to see they are there for families or individuals who want to par-take in cultural aspects of the city.... and not there for just the sake of the casino. Indeed, this gracious building turned into a class act venue that is surely going to attract a crowd that demonstrates the same dignity and respect for such a storied place by doing the town right.... all swanked up in complementary attire to the venue! How exciting!!!

Cleveland: Retail News
Actually, DU has far exceed the owners' expectations. Financially, they are pretty well ahead of schedule and have had some difficulty keeping up with demand. The clothing may be expensive, but when you have quality over quantity, it pays for itself. Such is a philosophy widely void in the American consumer public these days because they're used to cheap throw away garbage...which often has one actually spending more in the long run. As for sizes... I would suggest trying to shed some pounds. Oh and in regards to post 1750... You've got it SPOT ON.. Yes Cleveland, stop with the mediocre expectations and low self esteem that often gets you what you exude. CRAP! I actually find DU's prices in line with Macy's and you are getting a better product and supporting a local/independent retailer.. Multiply this times a 100 and we don't need big brother to come in and "do it for us" or "save the city" we should have learned by now that does not work. Afterall, we all want spaces filled, right? Cannot survive if people do not find the real reasons to support them...instead of just buying on price alone and not really comparing apples to apples when making a purchase decision. Instead, to many compare apples to oranges and think they're getting the same thing. Personally, I would pay a little more for a REAL merchant to customer experience and in knowing I am helping keep these entities from going extinct. I want our city to offer something different...not follow the crowd of clone zones. I also say this as a one time small retail merchant. Anyway, I find the quality at DU to be fantastic. One pair of pants you get there for $79 or more, will last far longer and look nicer longer than 3 pair you buy at a mall for less. That is actually how people used to shop before the market was flooded with inferior junk. They had less clothing, but better quality..and took care of it. Such purchase practices are almost always more sustainable, economically, socially, and environmentally. If you want some cheap prices... try Dean Rufus House Of Fun in OC...good product for a little less and a local merchant. Pants, shirts, etc.. Or also try M.Lang for a unique experience. I have bought so many stitches of clothing there and it is all fantastic and lasts! Good prices too...and serves cocktails...and talks with his customers...a great experience! Can't do that at Dillard's.

Just sharing some photos (there are three pages worth on Flickr below) of some problematic litter/illegal dumping areas in OC. Mostly near 25th and Detroit and west to 28th near Bounce. The photos do not do justice to the amount of trash actually there. Hopefully these areas, main drags through the neighborhood, will be targets for spring clean-ups and more sustained attention. If interested in getting involved, please PM me! Thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/tanyacruz/

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
How convenient.... I think some knew this would be the case all along... Make it look like you want to preserve the building and then claim you cannot do it for the host of reasons presented. What a joke...all those who wanted this casino so badly and at the same time want your history preserved and pedestrian friendly city, get what you deserve!.....Get what you deserve for banking all your chips on this gaming nonsense to "save the city" in any way. The proverbial "deal with the devil" is what you got..sell your city's soul for parking lots for suburban fat people too lazy to walk 10 feet! This city has way too many parking spaces as it is and should be doing away with them instead of adding more! WTF? Btw, a little off, but surely near...and to our other "savior" Maron...how about maintaining the restores on 4th a little better. The maintenance on details like lighting and facade paint and other pointers is slack. Restoration is not something you do once and forget about it for another 50 years. This kind of slack is a disease here.

WTF is with this town and its God D! obsession with parking!!!!! There is more space for cars don't won than people and ultimately it will be a scenario of "Parking for what???"

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
I would like to think of others following the path....but I am skeptical. I don't think other, non-sports related-high enders will use fancy high tops as a reason to come running. Sorry, don't want to sound like the poo pooer, but IMO, this is another retail disappointment. It is just a fancy decorated Footlocker... Uh oh... more plastic tip cigar butt litter on its way, as this is a lot of the clientele associated with the fancy sport footwear.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
Dress shoes too? I like to think that TC will offer more than high tops on steroids. Some of us actually like to wear more than ripped jeans, ball caps and glorified sneakers. It sounds like, from the description, that this is nothing more than a glamorized Footlocker. Just my interpretation though...from reading about it so far. Shop Indie!

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
^ When you say "WB" are you referring to Walden Books? And JBorger...you're spot on.... people do tend to shop where they live... pretty simply concept....and when suburbs go out and get the same things downtown gets without enough residency downtown ...then the recipe is that you do not attract the suburban shoppers or volume needed to sustain a store. So, why not focus on creating more downtown residency so that needed businesses/stores will increase. meanwhile, it is important for those in and near downtown to support what is already here... from A to Z.. instead of Home Depot for example..try Sutton's on Prospect...if you are not going to build a whole house, there is no need to go into a 15 acre warehouse to buy a light bulb! There are many other examples to cite too, but that is the idea. The quality, service, convenience, and knowledge of product is almost always a cut above the box/parking lot scene.

Question: When will the neon "RTA" sign be repaired at W. 25th Rapid station? The light has been out for a long time now. Oh, guess it will be that way indefinitely... No answer.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
Just curious... I wonder how many people on this forum actually live in or near Cleveland? Just for my own curiosity... I also wonder what makes many so sure that those who will come downtown to a casino, from wherever, will come to shop too...and not just opt to go gamble, drink..eat...go home and continue their current shopping habits---that is, at least for those coming from suburbs who might be set in their ways. Sure, I think it will certainly add some renewed interest, but I would not bank on it so confidently. I also like the idea of fostering more local and independent higher end places, like what JBorger suggested, in adding a place like Banyan Tree...instead of clone zoning the place with the typical line-up which does not really set aside from the rest....or express much individual character of our city....in adding the typical chain of stores. Some ok, but this needs to have the offering of the element of some different as well; the right mix to serve both residents in and near downtown and ones that will be appealing or a lure for outsides. Sure the whole downtown setting in itself is an attraction and an experience that is not had at the typical suburban mall... But a interesting and functional mix would be good.

Typical slack customer service story that has a representative refusing to admit he/she might have made a mistake....and offer a viable answer. Instead, she is more interested in "being right" and defending...than doing right. Such is the sort of thing customer service training these days needs to polish up the act. It is slack and no excuses. Another example of how a lot of little things can add up to become a lot...and leave either big negative impressions, or positive ones. (Disclaimer: I know....but all is perfect here and no room for improvement)

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
Yes I know they left but since the Casino and medical mart is coming there should be renewed interest in this space because high rollers will be there so Forest City should be pushing high end retailers a lot and also could add the downtown residency boom as an incentive (which was missing in the 90's) Not poking at you personally...but this is the logic that amuses me..when people assume this casino is gong to attract some high end roller crowd.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Etheostoma Caeruleum replied to blinker12's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentIt is not a national "trend" being casual...it is national plague of a lack of effort, laziness.... and simple know how in wearing something respectable, especially in a nice place. I am so sick and tired of this sloppiness being glossed over with buzz words like "Trend" or "Hip"... Here's one word for that... "CLASS"...and class is something that never goes out of style. Ripped pants and t-shirts, ball caps.. Please!.. If one time you go out to eat at a special place.. make some f-ing effort.. Its not as though you're just passing by for a quick lunch. Such a place is a classy looking place and going to it should be a special event, especially with a date. If It were my place I would not tolerate crappy dress..and no, it does not mean you have to wear a 3p suit. Oh and as for the Mexican place opening in the Parking Lot District... Yes, that is something we just do not have enough of these days is Mexican restaurants. How so very unique!

Maybe this belongs on the HL Thread..not sure.. But was wondering if anyone knows why those cool public art lightning bolt looking light displays on the HL at PHS have only one working? Is this temporary or are they broken? This is a part of the HL RTA Corridor, isn't it?

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
The aerial photo showing all the parking lots is a knock out slap in the face of reality that is so embarrassing about this part of downtown. There IS not town... this, right in the middle of the urban hub. Looks as though there should be a Lowe's and Home Depot there with the parking lots. I can never believe how this property has sat undeveloped for so long, despite parking goons having their way with the city. I look at all this parking and wonder... "Parking for WHAT?"
