  1. I agree, and thanks! IMO, the PD will only cover more of this if their is some sort of dramatic/negative twist of "Its failing and its because its Cleveland" connotation. There is a lot of energy and effort going into this place and it will be a very useful place to downtown residents, especially. On the fun side of things, if it can get the promotion it needs, people will know that there will be something to explore downtown past 6:00 PM besides digestible consumption. I am hearing Cle-Plus may try and help with getting the words out. It is a work in progress, so someone who comes down should not expect the images portrayed for the ultimate vision---However, for starters, this learning/retail center will be nice.
  2. New website... www.gardensunderglass.net and here is the progress link: http://web.me.com/gardensunderglass/gardensunderglass/Progress_ReSource_Center.html#7
  3. ^^ You mean that triangle apartment complex? The whole thing or just that retail area...or am I not in the ballpark?
  4. Anyone interested in attending the presentation described below, or helping with this effort, please contact us. Thank You! A note from Rob/Pastor Doug concerning the anti-litter campaign: The objective of the litter issue at tonight's meeting is basic and simple: Litter around the city should not be allowed to get any worse, and it will unless we formulate a sustained effort to curb it, the problem will get worse. For the above reason, I would like to announce that currently, myself and Pastor Doug Horner are working on raising a campaign to increase education and awareness of the negative and costly impacts of litter in any given community, socially, economically, and environmentally. To start this, there will be a meeting on September 14th @ 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Community Church, located on the corner of W.45th and Franklin, where all block clubs and interested and concerned parties can attend and are encouraged and invited to come. The presentation will feature a guest speaker from Keep Ohio Beautiful's N.E. Ohio representative, Mike Mennett. The message to start is simple: While It is one important component of litter abatement to continue regular clean-ups, which our area has seen frequent participation, we must address the deeper issue that will involve changing the conditions and mindsets and that produce the problem in the first place----and to plant the seeds of changing them. We will discuss what people can and should be doing as individuals to curb the problem and what block groups and businesses can do or should be doing as a community, to assist in reducing this problem. One mindset we hope to change is the "This is just how it is in an urban environment" adage. Most of all we will learn the economic devaluation of a community when this issue is not seen as or taken seriously. While we will not likely curb all of the problem, any bit helps; and the solutions are easier than we think. Please share this note with the block club tonight... and concerning outreach, we would appreciate when we set the day for the presentation, that whomever is reading this now, will encourage others to attend. Regards, R. Carillio D. Horner
  5. ^ Great idea C-Dawg...why not? Bigger is not always better, afterall.
  6. In reference to above Chicago mentions, nothing in disrespect to Chicago (I have cousins there!) and not at all saying their are not examples there worth aspiring for.... However, I am tired of this being used as the model all the time as if it were the only city on the planet. Enough ego stroking for it already. Cleveland should also strive to be original, lead....and create ideas all its own that other cities will want to emulate. Original ideas happen in places besides New York or Chicago and if we can work on the self esteem/inferiority issue first, I think more of us will discover that ideal. Again, in my opinion.....these lists are a lot subjective. Instead of looking at re-invention factors, they hold these cities to their past successes, and see only how it WAS as the means to judge the current situation in them. Compounding this, they keep focusing on cores and these days I think it is only fair to include STMA's...and No... I am not saying we should ignore the failures in the core right now, but maybe those failures have something to do with monetary rewarding for sprawl moreso than urban core renewal. These lists often simply cast too much of a broad brush.
  7. From Friends Of Edgewater State Park: There will be an annual meeting on Sat. Sept 18th at the beach front pavilion at noon. Before that, from 10:00am to about 11:45am, we will be holding our beach clean-up for the Adopt-a-Beach project. Hope you can attend!

  9. Amen! This should be the focus for a while.....more functional to the neighborhood, unique and independent establishments with an original identity.
  10. Yes, I agree..and it has historically been on of the busiest with pedestrian and vehicle traffic.... in its current state, however, it is now one of the deadest... And yet it is such a big one. In the meanwhile, why not keep up very basic curb appeal...a sign would exude intent....no sign leaves people open to form an opinion that may be otherwise negative.
  11. Is this place open? Is anything in there? The website is "Bunn" coffee makers. Their phone number is listed but wrong.
  12. I meant just what I said. It simply means that some businesses wind up closing or are forced to move because of neighborhood decline closing in, and the behavior that too often accompanies it that has a certain percentage of individuals not knowing how to behave in a communal setting and instead function with dysfunctional and with anti-social behavior...and that area is seeing its roots of such a problem....and so I have to wonder, that's all. But on this forum there are too many apologists for situations like that and instead chose to sugar coat or gloss over the reality of an issue. If the above had nothing to do with the place closing.....then that's fine. Uh ohhhh!!!....I smell the race card about to be played even though its not the issue or topic, so I'll stop! :-o

  14. As much as I think PC is an important group. I may tend to agree. On another note, they are really slack with feedback for idea suggestions. This is really offputting.
  15. ^True, it does exude construction and does not look as bad as what 668 did, but it would be nice to see some activity lately.
  16. ^ Exactly why I was concerned when they peeled off all that skin, for concern we have another 668, which was "supposed" to not be the case. It is an eyesore. The siding wasn't much better but at least it looked finished.
  17. That old beaten down buzz phrase again.... "young people" I guess no one over 35 has room to live here then. Doesn't matter that we spend the most in the economy, I guess....offer a more stable and less transient base of residents on the long term. That's not important. Nahhh. :-(
  18. Amazing shots! Unbelievable! Bravo and great series! Notice in the photo where people are standing on the escalators that most everyone is standing to one side to allow pep,e to walk up and pass if they are climbing the stairs...unlike so many times here where so many people chose to clog the lane with their big rear ends...when they should be climbing the stairs.
  19. There seems to be, from looking from street level, a very quiet time in this project. Haven't noticed any activity at all lately. Any new updates?
  20. Here is a new opening near Tremont. I don't really know if this is the perfect thread for this, but I will announce an event there that will help kick off the unofficial opening as well as explain what the new place is all about.... Skim through. ANNOUNCING THE NEW RADIO THEATER NIGHT SOCIAL! -- PLEASE RSVP! CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATER: “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN”, Written by: Ian Martin. Starring Ralph Bell. A man wakes up in a strange place with a strange woman and cannot remember anything from the night before—And discovers he is someone else. But WHO?..and WHY? More..... Radio Mystery Theater—refreshing alternative to television! Did you ever hear the old saying "it's so old it's new?" Well, that is what I can say about old time radio theater because listening to it is such a refreshing break from television or movies. I have a disc collection of CBS's "Radio Mystery Theater" which ran from 1974 until 1982. This show was produced by long time radio theater creator Hyman Brown and hosted by E.G. Marshall--who had the kind of storytelling voice that made you want to gather around a fireplace on a cold October night and just listen! CBS Radio Mystery Theater was actually a rebirth of radio theater which had been absent from---or rare on the radio airwaves for several years prior. It featured many great guest actors and iconic voices, as well as the little known performer. Long before television people used to gather around the radio and listen to their favorite shows. Featured were such subjects as drama, adventure, comedy, horror, and mystery. My favorite is mystery. Now let me get on with why I like these radio shows so much! In radio theater, unlike television or movies, I appreciate the fact that since there is no moving picture to go along with the dialogue, the script writing had to be very descriptive and imaginative to paint the picture of what is happening in one's mind. There were no super enhanced computer effects to make up for the substance a particular storyline lacks, which in my opinion seems to be so common in many of today's mainstream movies. Quality writing is what radio theater is all about and if that's what you like that's what you'll get! Most of the time, the acting is fabulous! Additionally, another advantage of radio theater is that it offers a chance for improving listening skills, increasing attention span---and developing your imagination. It gives the eyes a rest from the glare of the television too! I like laying down, closing my eyes and allow the picture to form in my mind...the characters, the scenes, the time periods etc.... It can become addictive! Radio theater is still present today and probably the most popular is the variety show which can be heard on National Public Radio, Prairie Home Companion, hosted by Garrison Keillor. Radio theater is making a comeback on various local public radio stations in Cleveland/N.E. Ohio! RADIO MYSTERY THEATER NIGHT SOCIAL Every 2nd Thursday Of The Month--7:00 PM "APERTURE" PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY/STUDIO AND VARIETY STORE at 2541 Scranton Rd. – Cleveland. Telephone is 216-574-8977 Join "APERTURE" PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY/STUDIO AND VARIETY STORE for an evening of old time radio mystery theater, Every 2nd Thursday of the month starting at 7:00 PM. Sit back, relax…bring your favorite spirits, or favorite snack---or enjoy refreshments/snacks when available (we will be offering snack trays as an occasional courtesy) and hear many famous voice actors performing great stories by many classic radio writers--all in a nostalgic and intimate setting. These stories were crafted especially for radio and to stir your imagination without relying on a picture on a screen! Between acts, there will be breaks for socializing and mingling with others who appreciate this truly unique lost art form existing long before television. The evening will be hosted by “Classic Movies Radio and Nostalgia” Meet Up Group, in cooperation with Aperture Photography Gallery/Studio and Variety Store! Please call Calvin or Rob, your hosts, at 216-401-3118 to learn more about this free event---or if you need directions to Aperture, near Cleveland‘s historic Tremont neighborhood.
  21. I do not feel businesses in there are doing more to promote themselves and reach the target market.... It is such a great space, iconic.... and so convenient...Just being there is a pleasure...so why do things seem to struggle then? If I lived downtown right near there and wanted flowers... I could walk there and get them. Now what is the choice? Driving to a farther place or going to "Giant Anal?" Makes no sense.
  22. ^ Agreed a thousand percent! People who can/are totally able.....and are not recycling as much as they can...are part of the problem why we have so much random crap laying all over the city, our highways, etc..etc.. Next time you take a drive along the highways, take note to the rubbish all over the sides, in medians, etc.. And while much of this is from littering... a lot of this is also from trash cans not properly closed...and much of the rubbish would NOT even be IN the trashcan if it were recycled. Anyway you look at it, this should help curb some of the random debris/litter/rubbish laying all over the place. This condition cannot...and should not be allowed to get any worse here, end of story. Those who have absolutely no clue as to what this is doing to us socially, economically, and environmentally...are the ones who spew such denial statements as Mayday was pointing out. Recycling needs to be mandatory...there is no more putting this off. The time is now because too many people refuse to learn while they have been given all the chances and opportunity to do so...so sorry, now laws need to be made. Not recycling does nothing for this city's image. In fact, it makes us a joke in the eyes of the progressive communities that move forward with it and get it...as to why it makes sense. They bask in the glow of national praise. In a city that has a notorious history of bad environmental stewardship, such a turnaround is welcomed. That is, unless you want our lakefront/city to look like a garbage dump and be embarrassed to show anyone around town. Nice to know the city can look as god in person as in pictures. Its simply inexcusable to not recycle these days....This pitch out disposable bad habit needs to go by the wayside, or we will. I see people pitching crap on the ground all the time without a clue or care in the world and I am thinking... "WTF!!!???.. Is this back to 1970, or something?" One place each and every school kid should see, is to go on a field trip to the landfills to see what actually happens to all the waste we generate. It does not simply "go away"... The sight is utterly shameful and pathetic.
  23. ^ We should settle for nothing less.
  24. ^ No, that is not what my logic is suggesting at all so please don't take it in that direction.... Most invasives like this were brought upon by commercial transit situations, not by passenger travel. Just accept the inconvenient truth instead of denial or taking it into a totally different subject. We can all learn something from the information provided and do our part. This is one thing where, collectively, we can all help make a difference as buying local will increase the local economy and decrease demand for imports....and perhaps lead to stricter more thorough watch of what comes in and what goes out of the borders.
