Cleveland: Random Development and News
Hmm...I wonder why... or if it has anything at all to do with problematic behavior creeping in.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^^ The "Parking Lot District" could use a hotel to fill in the sea of pavement which, if this "tear it down to put up a parking lot" thing continues... is overtaking the amount of actual structures. I have to wonder, however, that if the current hotel scene is slumping, why adding more is wise... Unless, of course, there is the promotion of conventions, events, etc to help fill them and people the scene. Good to see some pulse in this project. I'll believe it when I see it.

Invasive Beetle Alert--Brought to you by cheap Chinese plastic crap?
More of the "high cost of low price" in this "global economy" where shipping this and that everywhere when we can get it right here....is also often carrying with it, a host of exotic animals that wreak havoc in their non-native lands. Was that Mall-Wart widget worth saving that dime...at what cost in the bigger picture? Got air? Another good reason to buy local as often as possible. Interesting alert and what you can do to help is outlined below. Just the facts. http://www.beetlebusters.info/

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^^ HA! Wow! Yeah...and if that happens it will be because of the passing of the buck on WHO's responsibility it is to collect the contents. That looks like "Randy" in Ohio City.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
They are really nice. I hope the ecologically challenged--especially the wonderful RTA patronage-- who do not yet even understand what a garbage can is for...will be able to figure out what recycling bins are. There is a difference between the two. But nevertheless, its good to see this is starting to click. On the fares.... I just thought that since it was said in the article that "there is nothing we can do" I wonder how many more fare skippers could happen as a result. The last thing I would have ever stated publicly is something like that.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
In all my time riding trains and buses in Sydney over many years, I never witnessed anyone being able to get free rides. Transit police ask to see tickets. If you don't have one...you get off. If you are caught sneaking on, you will be arrested. I have seen it. Guess what? The problem is virtually non-existent. At least in plain sight. Transit police are always checking tickets. If transit police wore plain cloths and caught anyone trying to get on w/o paying.. They need to be arrested on sight. (zero tolerance) OR, if one cannot prove the purchase on the train...then they need to be asked to exit the vehicle. Sad to know that there are honest paying customers out there riding the bus with freeloaders who probably are causing other problems around town too or making the ride for peaceable riders, not so peaceful. :|

Etheostoma Caeruleum replied to blinker12's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentThat's right...Not everyone does know what one is..... Gee whiz...some aren't even sure what to call them. When you're in Oz and say "KaBOB" the locals laugh because they say "Ka-BAB" :-D

With all food on 4th...and the rails, indeed it resembles a giant outdoor food court...cattle feedlots. Slop the hogs.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
It is not surprising to me.... Nebraska also does not have several major metro areas sprawling all over the place all competing for the same chunk of pie. Sprawl sucking the life out since the 50's from the cores...now the exurbs suck it out of the inner burbs and all metro areas virtually taking a path that they will be bumping into one another... If we were the only large metro area in Ohio...and if our overall population was lower...you'd see much more being easily retained in the core city.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I posted this article on another thread... I am not really sure what to make of this because is someone investing here in the hope of making some interesting things happen downtown and with the prospect of being on the brink of a possible new boom... OR, is this just a million dollar "home flipping" investor thing? I know nothing, so that is why I am posing the question. We want real investment here that is of a stakeholder sense...not a "let's cash in on their misfortune" thing. Educate me.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Although I can understand why many here are mentioning that this system is not solely used in Cleveland to address the "Woe-is-us.... and everyone else is perfect" factor...and I know that is not about excusing such a system.... But we need to start being more concerned with what goes on HERE and how to make it better, rather than laxing our expectations, for lack of a better way to put it..... just because it happens in other places. Any fool could have seen this coming. Anyone who rides needs to be able to provide proof or purchase. Now... Let's discuss how to implement such a plan seeing that RTA is always broke. (Hmmm..fair skipping cannot help that case) This should be the ensuing discussion from here on out and perhaps all the wonderful minds on here can come up with a viable remedy. Btw..the "there is nothing we can do" pass off is unacceptable, period. (be it true at the moment or not) It is a statement that totally alleviates their responsibility to take responsibility, A.K.A....a "cop out!" There is ALWAYS something we can do. For starters, stress with conviction that your agency is doing all it can to solve this issue.....and also...why not consult other cities who have had the same problem and find out what they are doing, if anything, to curb or prevent this problem. If they are doing this, then good... But it needs to be made clear because a quote like that as another poster alluded to.... is like PR suicide. You are asking for it when a quote like this is printed... The Cleveland Dot Com peanut gallery will have a field day with such.

No wonder they struggle. If your head guy says stuff like this....you're doomed! "No way to enforce?" Utterly pathetic!

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Should this be concerning for this type of investment? Is someone trying to cash in here on hard times? I don't know if this is a good thing or potential bad thing...especially when you read the comment by "RedBrickBarn" in comments...typical CDC ultimate pessimism. Optima pays $46.5 million for Penton Media building in downtown Cleveland Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Optima Ventures LLC has continued it Cleveland buying spree, snapping up the Penton Media Building downtown for $46.5 million. The investor, based in Miami, bought the office building in a deal that closed Monday, according to property records. The seller was K/B Fund IV Cleveland LLC, a real estate investment fund managed by KBS Realty Advisors.... Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
^ Agreed. The overall out of control of it...in itself, is a "road to nowhere"

Yes, Cleveland Store... I made a short radio ad for them.... Great place. Tower City.

Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh Passenger Rail Service
Love this to come back and I would ride it a lot... Just beware: Warren.... inept city with severe problems disproportionate to its size will be the weakest link...so, I hope it does not present issues for this project. This has been a personal concern. They were also a road block for the Great Western Reserve Greenway...which ironically, was on an already abandon rail line.

Still more 80's Cleveland
This is one of my favorite downtown old buildings... Pity it is gone... At a time when the city was tearing down so many classics, there was already a myriad of parking lots and already cleared spaces upon which to build. If only that could have been the case to spare all these structures. :-(

Cleveland: Gardens Under Glass At Galleria
Just an update here to cover some of the things I have been trying to help with in this project..... By mid to end of September, there should be the solid beginnings of a unique learning center/retail space in the Galleria. Work is beginning on preparing a space that will feature educational elements on air, water, and soil....then feature some eco-friendly products, that if used instead of what one currently uses, can result in the cleaner and more sustainable quality of the three. There will be a nifty live natural habitat fish exhibit featuring some smaller lesser known fishes and habitats we take for granted. All in all, a goal is to implement sustainable practices throughout the building such as recycling, composting, and of course the growing. Many products eventually here will be unique and not typically found elsewhere..such as many products made from recycled materials. For those who live in this neighborhood, you will eventually find it a go to place for gifts, and other essential items that you cannot find in suburbs. On another note....Currently there is interest in recruiting someone who would consider opening a quality thrift store in the structure that will feature select and quality clothing, furnishings, etc... It will not look like a junk flea market or a Goodwill store. This will be very clean and set up well. If there is anyone interested in this venture, please leave a message. Hopefully, the entire Gardens Under Glass at the Galleria will be a place where you can one stop shop for many eco-friendly products, good, and services, right downtown under one roof...so you don't have to drive all over creation finding such places individually. Additionally, such a scenario will give independent and/or locally owned and operated merchants a chance to consolidate and increase their presence and force in a largely franchised and chain market. It is really exciting to see what is evolving here and your support is appreciated. We might even see some interesting transportation vehicles floating around as well in the future!

Cleveland: Downtown Storefront Displays
Another window has been completed. There are more to come as there are more in the works.... Eventually, when enough are going at any given time we hope to create a downtown do-it-yourself artwalk to encourage people to walk by the windows. For now... Let's introduce this message from Joan: 1603 Euclid/Charmaine Spencer Please allow me to give credit: 1603 Euclid is courtesy of Colliers Ostendorf-Morris, David Ostoich and James Consolo; both installations are by CIA graduate Charmaine Spencer who works out of 78th Street Studios in the west side Cleveland neighborhood of Detroit-Shoreway. Ms. Spencer has been chosen to participate in Ingenuity Fest 2010 September 24-26. Here are some photos...not the best, but you get an idea. This is a great way to dress up downtown in the interim and I hope we continue to gain support.

Some kind of arched structure better be used, because all else simply looks like the I-480 Bridge: Boring. This is a major gateway to the city for the nation so we may as well put on our best suit and tie.
