  1. Yeah, saw this too.. it is a great photo! Very spooky looking.
  2. I placed it here because Edgewater Park is a part of the bigger picture, "Cleveland Lakefront State Park"....and this is the closest thing we have for a nature center not too far from EWP, specifically. It can be placed in other threads sure, but IMO, this simply creates too many threads. The nature center is a small but contributing existing component that offers something to do along the lakefront. Something educationally fun, at that, for a change.
  3. This is good news! Nature center opens at Cleveland Lakefront State Park Thursday, July 22, 2010, 9:00 AM Liz Navratil, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Carol Ward kept one thought in mind when she designed the new nature center at Cleveland Lakefront State Park: "Children like to do things, and adults like to see things." That's why Exploration Station, the latest collection of Lake Erie-themed science exhibits, has plenty to do for all its visitors. Kids, for instance, will be.... 4. Still no further groundbreaking on this?
  5. Here is another place I used to stop by now and then that I think has closed: "The Americana Coffee Shop" on E. 65th/Slavic Village. Did this close too? I rode by and it didn't look open...the number is disconnected. Anyone know? That is such a great spot with potential there...But the area has issues, I know.
  6. Indeed, many great places... but seems a bit like these fellows don't know their own region very well...and that's typical of many Ohioans.

Hey, fun thread! Let's see... Naturally speaking....Serpent Mound region, Lake Erie/Islands, Ohio River, Edge of Appalachia, Hocking Region, Big Darby Creek and other gem river/forest systems. Man made things.. Just all the metro areas..and their art, historical and cultural attributes. I have to think more on this as there are so many things to chose from.
  8. We hear so many wanting this "near river/lake dining or other activity"....and although this is not exactly with a great river view... it closes and we say it is a bad location? If it is so desired to have this type of venue, why is the power house struggling with a nice venue like RB.... Now we have nothing, and say these are bad locations as if we are looking at some perfect spot on the river we'd rather be. If the W. Bank is not a destination anymore...what is? I think the Power House location is nice...the boardwalk behind it...nice potential and when full force was spectacular. I guess what I am saying is that if we are not currently using what little we have left down there, why would adding a lot more suddenly change things? I am all confused on this...bewildered as to why we are not at the very least, making ample use of spaces we already have near the river....Example: Boardwalk/Shooters/Power House. I will note that some of these places are not the best maintained and have had nothing really done to them since the 80's.
  9. Thanks... What a great space to not have it regularly open for the public.
  10. Hey gang..... "LeCon" is in a new Broadway show!!!....
  11. ^ That's right...and if the cops do their job, then I don't want to hear about them "profiling" or anything like that, end of story.... Bad behavior as the kind we're talking about that happens in this district, profiles itself.
  12. I would prefer a different pet store than Pet Land because Pet Land is tied to puppy mills. I agree. In fact, although not a full line pet store....I ran a very well respected aquarium store for 7 years and a service for 15..and if I still had the interest in it, I would consider opening up a custom aquarium shop that teaches environmental ethics in aquarium keeping.
  13. Its quite simple. I am addressing the idea/scenario that when the cops whistle is blown on someone..... or more than one and they happen to be black.... and ARE in fact behaving inappropriately that would warrant the blown whistle, so to speak.....that is it nauseating to see the race card dealt and the apologist argument come up that "blacks are being profiled" or something to that nature, AKA, "The Race Card". The fact is, that anyone who is behaving in such a way that is illegal, inappropriate, anti-social, etc.... is profiling themselves and therefore deserves to have corrective measures taken. But personally, I do think that there are many (black, white, cheery, fudge ripple, or whatever flavor) who think such behavior is the norm and acceptable....and it just might come as a surprise when they are reminded that it is NOT ACCEPTABLE!, period! And as I posted above, if the cops happen to be blowing the whistle on those who happen to be black at the time...and if it is warranted to do so..... that pulling the race/profiling card is simply inappropriate. I am sure they (cops) will get to the rest of the problem makers soon enough, no matter what flavor they are! On the patrols, I always thought foot or bicycle patrol is best...designated officers for that given area at certain times. Its not far to walk/bike and being outside the car, you senses become more connected with the area in question.
  14. I would be in favor of a nice specialty grocer.... But since we mention "parking" and if one its willing to take a short drive or bus trip.... There is a food co-op near Little Italy, and one eventually emerging on the near west side.... Better off supporting that if you want to support the real/original concept the local/independent food/products effort, than TJ's. They were established long before the chains.
  15. No one ever said there wasn't white trouble makers...and no one should come to their defense either. This does not become a "race issue" until someone pulls the race card, which is the point in question.
  16. Yes, and as long as some are exempt from the laws/rules.... while others are not, then it will result in the rest looking at those who are getting away with whatever.... and ask why they're so special to get away with it...and thus, such just creates the negative perceptions that some have of others in the first place! The laws and rules apply to ALL, period! So, if they happen to be enforced on a few who happen to be black at that given time... don't deal the race card. I am sure the cops will get to the rest of the idiots out there sooner or later as well, no matter what flavor they are.
  17. ^ Amen! Those who behave in such ways are profiling themselves. No one is doing it for them, except them....and IF they happen to be black, (and I said HAPPEN) and law enforcement blows the whistle on what may be illegal activity....the race card is pulled, so the behavior is left unabated. Meanwhile, anyone else would get in trouble for it, as some are apparently exempt from the law. Such is a scenario I am getting pissed sick to death of..and it seems like this area of the WD is swaying to another flats situations, w..hich is why I am not a fan of making it all bar-ish establishments there. We are stupid if we ignore the correlations to attracting a percentage of these other problems...and the trouble these days that can occur is a lot worse than what it ever has been years ago. Perhaps it has just a teenie tiny bit of something to do with a mass marketed "culture" that glamorizes so much that is foul/anti-social/obnoxious behavior through the music, food clothing, etc. ( to a whole new level than ever before for the sake of making money, no matter the social negative repercussions) You fill your ears, mind, stomach with garbage...you become garbage. Oh, I am sooo sorry.. I'm not allowed to acknowledge reality of bad behavior in ALL people because some might interpret it as being racist, right? Oh, how prejudiced of them to judge me like that! Well...B.S. and to hell with that. As long as the behavior, or lack-thereof, has someone to rescue it from the whistle being blown on it...then the area in question will be lost.
  18. ^ That is a good program. On a side related note.. I have a lot of people who visit here who are well traveled and from other countries...and are brutally honest and would say what they feel....and after showing them around the area...taking them to many artistic, cultural, and historical areas...natural areas, and just a general mix of things, all seem to see all that many cannot see here. The "moving to the sun-belt thing" is passe... for me, been there done that in the late 70's early 80's. It just does not have the heart/soul we have, in my opinion, because so much is just all new and sprawling. It is amazing when I ask locals if they ever heard of this or that...been here or there in Ohio...and how many say "No" There is plenty to do here and it depends on what one likes to do...and we are within close proximity to all the larger cities too...but with a scaled down cost in many respects.
  19. Many, through fart-in-the-wind hearsay that "its better somewhere else"...leave because of just that. The Ohio inferiority complex takes over. Many end up finding their way back. The complex just does not exist in Cleveland/N.E. Ohio. Its as though their parents teach them to hate it here. We definitely need a better education about all this state is, can offer, and all its rich history etc....to stimulate a bit of better civic pride. I did the moving around thing and there is really no place in the country I would say I "must live there"... My next move will be totally off the continent to a different culture altogether. When places start to be listed "as the place to be" and so many jump on the bandwagon....this is a clue to me that it is time to defect.
  20. It actually IS the terminus, isn't it? Isn't that where the trail would stop/start?
  21. I was thinking something similar...coupled with a visitors center/environmental learning station/land lab for schools as well...Just a combination of uses. I also don't understand why buildings like this, while empty, have to get so dilapidated and cannot be kept respectable looking until it is occupied. Just a bit of paint, trimming here and there...sweeping would do the trick.
  22. Is there a grand prize for anyone who guesses correctly?
  23. Not really..... in the long run, the silver lining is that water will be healthier. The real gem of the area is the Chagrin River,a State Scenic and Wild designation... and rarity in rivers. For those of us who like to canoe, hike, fish, photograph wildlife, etc...we all spend money on that stuff too... This is different for a change, seeing a golf course bulldozed...as plenty of natural areas were bulldozed for golf courses. I am reminded of Micheal Douglass in the Movie "Falling Down" and what he said to those golfers! I can really relate to Michael, here. But then again, I have always hated golf eventhough I was pretty good at it.
  24. Guest Services are where tickets are purchased. Because this has been a select month for this opening..and coupled wit the fact it has not been open in so long, it is no wonder their has been a tidal wave of visitors storming the castle. If open more regularly, I look for that storm to calm and better efficiency in the operation. Remember...many of the volunteers didn't have much time to rehearse this gig and a lot has been impromptu. Still not too bad overall. In the spirit of budget concerns and preserving the deck physically...and its novelty/magic... I made a suggestion to have it open for 4 weekends 4 times per year which would be one month for each season of the year..to offer a glimpse of the city during different seasons/moods of the city. As for the outdoor deck opening and night viewing....heck yeah, we'd all love that! Let's take it one step at a time and just be glad to see that the deck has finally re-opened! All I can do is offer my observations from volunteering...and if anyone wants to do this, again...just get there early and get your tickets at Guest Services. Yeah, it has been a bit like waiting in line at Cedar Point. I look at the enthusiasm towards this and the large turnouts as a positive problem to deal with.
  25. ^^ I rarely see a street sweeper in Cleveland running. Goodness knows we need to have them running more.
