  1. I am not always one who suggests flat out buying a place, but sometimes there are advantages to it that may override the disadvantages. For one thing, some of the rents right now are rivaling a mortgage payment! For many of the above reasons is why I am waiting to make a purchase and pay for a place flat out with cash again as I did several years ago...fix it up how I want it and not have to worry about discovering later that people around me in the same house/building do not know how to behave in a communal setting. I am actually staking out a few areas to get a feel of the location and people around it before I will buy. Prices are great now...you can even find a great foreclosure bargain and get a fixer upper on a decent street. So, if there is still time for waiting, you may even want to consider purchasing a nice place all to yourself. Personally, I am through with landlords who don't have a clue how to operate a place, keep it clean, etc... and want to charge big security deposits for filthy places. Owned for 7 years and just picky... Don't know, just a suggestion based on my experiences.
  2. I'm not Gay, or an expert on the Gay scene... However, I like to help promote small and unique locally owned and independent neighborhood businesses that add something different...so, be sure to check out The Dean Rufus House of Fun on W. 29th St. in Cleveland... Great little place... Sort of like a locally and independently owned Spencer Gifts for people of all walks of life and persuasions. Minors are not allowed in the store, however. Dean has done a great job in being a part of cleaning up that part of 29th St. Here is their web page plus full catalog: http://www.baynewear.com/page4.htm
  3. Let's make it happen and show some great public appreciation!
  4. This is absolutely precious! Thanks for sharing the best photo on the entire forum!
  5. Where was this taken? Looks like Quay 55. Oh nevermind... I see that it is...
  6. Meanwhile, its sits and rots....looking dirtier by the day. The plastic surgery center...Oh what an eclectic complimentary mix added to the superficial nightclub scene of fake boobs and injected lips.
  7. The word seems to be that if the turnouts are successful, it may become a regular thing.
  8. Passing along the information.... Here are two opportunities to get involved at Edgewater Park in the next couple of weeks: July 10th, 11am - 5pm. Treasure the Beach! Volunteers wanted to staff the FOESP table. Please contact Mandy [email protected]. Or just plan to attend the event: celebration of Clean Beaches Week, clean-up and kids activities. Meet near beach pavilion area. See attached flier. July 17th, 11am-1pm. Clean-up. Informal small group clean-up held the third Saturday of the month. Bring a few trash bags and gloves (optional). PLEASE RSVP to Robert Carillio [email protected] so that he can let you know if the clean-up is canceled. Meet at small lot at upper park. Happy Summer, Mandy Friends of Edgewater State Park
  9. Interesting. Yes it is a trend all right. Not so sure I like it...along with the imposing of blaring music in every restaurant (note I say "restaurant..NOT night club!) these days where you have to scream over the noise to have a nice civil congenial dinner conversation with a date. I see this dress sloppy "trend" as part of what I call "the race to the bottom" Many either are too lazy to do a dress up mean.....or simply do not know how....soooo...instead of learning how to do it up with class some times, let's call it a "trend" as we chose to instead, be sloppy. Instead of setting a decent a dress standard....the restaurant lowers it appeal to the sloppy. Sad when this has to be done to be popular. One thing I admired in Melbourne, Australia... even Perth, the calmer west coast is that when you go out, women and men, young...still know how to look knock out classy..and it was not about vanity, it was simply not losing the art of dressing appropriately for nice occasions. This was so refreshing. Then I came back and see the ripped shorts, jeans and sneakers... and/or flip flops worn in what are supposed to be rather nice places. I know most on this forum will not get what I am saying at all, much less agree and have to take the usual cheap shots... but that's ok, there are equally many who do get it. This is just not the "trend" I prefer... hence why I would rather entertain at home where I can even serve in real dinner ware and not Styrofoam and plastic with a shot of dioxin to go. I have a feeling that it is what will be very rare that will be popular in the future...and the experience of doing... for example.....a 1920's dinner date complete with time attire will be a place where people will go for the fun of the nostalgic experience. Just like Hep Swing dancing made a comeback with even young crowds. The price of one ticket for admission entitles you to step back into a given retro time. Maybe 50's, 60's too... possibilities are many and fun.
  10. I hope you're right. I hope they are started.... But, here you go again.... Your rant about "my rant" adds nothing either! Are you now the God that determines what contributes and what does not? I think it adds plenty in deciding whether or not it is the appropriate time to host an event like this and whether or not we'd like to look our best. This does not mean I am saying we should not go after the event. Furthermore, my comment was not a rant. But just in your honor...this one will be....... Nothing I say is about "non-believing" Trust me, if I did not believe, I would not be here as I can live wherever I want. However, the financial environment has been shaky with these projects as we know...and 2012 is not that far, as one poster indicated. Your accusations of my comment being narrow minded is just an example of you exercising a bit of a narrow mind yourself because you seem to refuse to allow any constrictive criticism be directed in this city's direction. Instead, you will throw such comments all into one pool that would mainly describe 95% of the comments on Cleveland Dot Com. That is not fair. Sorry, I won't lower my standards to meet what I sometimes see as slack performance. That's my MO...keeping standards higher than mediocre and stepping on the toes of complacency. I am also tired of justifying shortcomings here with the "Every city" preamble. As a rule of thumb, let's try to be more than the rest whenever possible. Now, with that said.... That adds nothing to the discussion.
  11. Then I would opt to have this convention at a later date when the city won't be caught with its pants down. No way I would want people to come here and have these projects still not started. Then, for example, go down to the river expecting some pedestrian oriented place to leisure...then see an empty mud field with trash and litter piling up. Great impression it'll leave.
  12. All has me again wondering..... Flats East, where are yooouuuuu????
  13. Young and hip? Democratic convention attendees are members of the NEA and AFSCME Here we go again with those buzz words... "young and hip" How young? and if too young, how many do you know who are actually paying attention to what is going on politically versus the desire to drink and party..... Those spending the most in the economy....35 to 55 this is young and hip enough as far as I am concerned yet an age group largely overlooked imo. If we want to become a town where people spend their party years, then leave..by all means, cater to them only...But if we want to become a more diverse and dynamic place of "choice" where people will want to stay and raise a family after they're done puking........then we cannot have all Jeff Spicoli atmospheres, either. Know what I mean "dude?" Narrrly!
  14. ^ Such a lane would set examples of how future highway design should be.
  15. No, you're not crazy. Since the introduction of Zebra Mussels into the Great Lakes in the mid 80's, the water has become clearer. They siphon water at a pretty fast pace, feeding off algae thus making the water clearer (or bluer). The water is clearer, but there is nothing really positive about the invasion of zebra muscles. It is just another invasive component that is eroding the bio-diversity of the native aquatic habitat which can eventually collapse the food chain in the lake making it lifeless to the point it can sustain very little life. These things smother other native muscles that other fish depend upon for food---die, contribute to oxygen depletion.... and make areas of the beaches stink among many other issues. I posted information about these on the under water Ohio thread... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,19687.0.html What seems appealing to the untrained eye, is creating literal dead zones in the lake. (round gobys and zebra muscles are both invasive introduced accidentally by shipping...gobys feeding off of perch/walleye eggs) And while it may look bluer now, it could get really dirty when/if the native fauna collapses. The more diverse in life a given body of water is in supporting native aquatic life......the healthier/cleaner is the rule of thumb. In the past, it was largely industrial discharge as the threat..today it is still some of that (point/non-point source pollution) invasives, and even lawn chemicals people use on lawns. Collectively, all this can pose just as many problems for the aquatic life. While not as visually dramatic in a polluted looking sense, the effects can be comparable in the long run. In other words, stewardship of this environment is not something we do once..and forget it. Its an ongoing effort that cannot afford to have us sit on our laurels because we cleaned it up once. "Housework" is an ongoing job, so to speak! Another good site: www.nanfa.org
  16. Will that leave a vacancy somewhere else?
  17. ^ Yes, just like most people's grandparents did in their backyards..fruit trees and all. This past year I had the pleasure of helping to process olives from olive trees. Its an experience.
  18. I wish Asiatown would create an entrance gate like that in Cleveland. Great material!
  19. This is good. I often think of how much space is wasted on turf grass when such could be space used for growing food as in "edible estates"
  20. Nice to see an addition to the collection in light of all the recent subtractions.
  21. ^ Agreed. I also am concerned about ongoing maintenance of new parks.... while spaces we already have are poorly maintained.....litter all over, little to no follow-up. This would be the case with/without funding as it is a philosophy issue, civic pride/ethic issue which is apparently not instilled in the mindset of many employees or those who live nearby and certainly not the transient element who poops on the neighborhood and moves on. Look at the spot along Detroit at 25th across from Massimo near bus stop. Its horrible...and all from those who think their city is a garbage can. Tired of cleaning up after them.
  22. Would love to see water features as long as bums don't choose to urinate and possibly bathe in them.
  23. Sometimes people catch a restaurant on an off day. I have had better or less than better experiences at a same restaurant.... Could be the help that day...Maybe someone new and such may have created a domino effect
  24. ^ Thanks for posting this here..... Indeed, a treasure!
  25. Where is Loraine Road? Oh, you mean Lorain Avenue. From a rundown of the 1906 city ordinance to organize the street system: "Section 3. CLASSIFICATION OF THOROUGHFARES. The term "Thoroughfare" means all ways used or opened for public travel, whatever its present designation. All thoroughfares running in a general east and west direction shall be called avenues. All thoroughfares running in a general north and south direction shall be called streets. All diagonal thoroughfares shall be called roads. All short or disconnected thoroughfares running in a general north and south direction shall be called places. All short or disconnected thoroughfares running in a general east and west direction shall be called courts. All curved thoroughfares shall be called drives." Sorry, but I'm a stickler on these designations Sorry...Excuse me.. "Avenue"
