Ohio inferiority complex is our biggest enemy. If we learn about the worth in our area economically, socially, culturally, historically, environmentally, etc...What role it had in shaping the nation and in any influence in the world..... Such may produce a populace that has more pride in their area... to not allow it to be dragged down and self defeated. It all boils down to this.. We only save what we love..and we only love what we know. I always thought the schools should require such a study, that would get students to know all about their region in many ways. We are failing to turn out students who know such things about where they are from.
  2. Tisk. So many want these neighborhoods filled with great little local independent establishments that define its or any given neighborhood's character--But not enough are willing to support them and abandon the big box scene. Real businesses, not museums.

  4. Asking us to "Just live with the mistake" is a typical settle for satus quo and afraid of change staement. KJP...right on with the counter discussion. It is really unarguable. We cannot continue down this heavy energy dependent money draining transportation system...adding more roads when we cannot maintain what we have..etc..etc.. I shudder to think what this state would look like in 30 years if allowed to just build a road anytime it gets too lazy to walk, ride a bike, or take a bus/train...or forbid we think of another possible way to do something. ODOT: '07 (I am prety positive) Roughly 4 million ALONE in cleaning up Ohio Highways--and such is ongoing. How about the senseless mowing of areas that equate to raking leaves in the middle of a forest! How much is that?
  5. ^^ Sadly they fail to realize how much of a pawn we have been to the auto dominated scene and industry for years.....and that depending on the point of view, one can easily see how being given the choice to drive....and that is your only choice, in the so called 'land of choice' , is not free at all, and in fact can be seen as a sort of "transportation slavery" Additionally, they seem to fail to realize that being a bit more "social" (until that word became demonized and associated with all that is "EVIL") is more about community being independent, helping itself and being diverse--instead of getting into the economic slavery of relying on one big company to build the entire economy around to the point they fall..we all fall..and then become dependent on, or see that such has bred more a need for the "social scene" to pick us up.... that they apparently hate in the first place.
  6. Just to comment on some of the above comments..... Many people have different ideas about what they deem "progress" Many for years thought it was "progress" to build the mass road/highway system. But,as years have proven, it created a total imbalance in how we spend transportation monies--to only support all that is auto-dependent. To me, if the result was taking away the alternative diversity in transportation options--then that is not 'good progress'. Progress may not always good for everyone in other words, and sometimes it can be bad. Castrating all other modes of transportation in Ohio in favor of producing a population so dependent and addicted to the auto-lifestyle to the point they cannot even fathom any other way to move, is laughable to me. Brutus' points about rail being a waste of money are very short sighted and limited to the scope of what transportation scene we have been forced to deal with for many many years. Others in places where transportation options are diverse and who know how to utilize trains would find such comments laughable and backwads. No one said that rail was going to be the cure all end all. (I thought the casino was supposed to do that! ;-) But, it is a start to get back to having some transportation options this highly populated state soooo desperately needs. You cannot say people will not ride rail when for 50 years they have been given no other choice than cars, and then expect that when the first rail comes back that everyone will turn up in droves to ride the train. It will be a slow process to get people exposed to rail...to get them to understand the benefits, and to get them back into the "habit" of using it... and to get back the know how--because stepping from the house into the car has been sooo easy. I can also bet a million I don't have, that if rail had the luxury of promoting itself with the kind of money that is spent on marketing cars and planes and what we spend on roads...... you'd see more and more people stepping on the rail. Some seem to think adding rail threatens their choice of driving a car, and that we will spend so much on maintaining it. I suggest they take a look at ODOT'S budget on maintaining highways every year! People really need to visit places where rail, auto, bus, etc...are all highly utilized and connected, to appreciate what having a viable rail system can do, HOW it works.....and its many benefits. Growing up on one model for their entire lives, cars and parking lots and highways... it will be difficult to crack through the thick heads of stubborness. Oh, and agree with Scrabble's point about creating a "BALANCED" economic future..key word, "balanced"...and building the entire transport network around auto, is not about balance.
  7. This may surprise you but the rail project is being designed for more people than just you. You like your car. Lots of people don't and find driving an inconvenience, time waster, and expensive when you factor in gas, parking, and the eventual maintenance your car will receive. The highways you use aren't economically feasible either. Neither are the airports. Nor seaports. All are more heavily subsidized than this rail project would be. Ask anyone here, I have been a critic of the plan as proposed but I still think rail in Ohio is a good idea. The lines to Cleveland and Cincinnati will eventually branch out and connect to high speed lines to other major metropolitan areas like Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. I second the motion. Bring on the rail. Most people in Ohio who have grown up with only the auto-dependent suburban model their whole lives, don't have a clue how far behind the rest of the planet we are in terms of this--and whats more, don't know what they are missing. There are a great deal of people out here who find the car/highway thing equally NOT in our best economic sense--especially when we have to shell out oodles of money each year to maintain highways brutalized by trucks and all the other maintenance that goes with this so called "convenience" Not convenient to me to be sitting in traffic, paying the expenses of maintaining the vehicle, the roads, insurance, fuel, possible citation risk, and so on. Just in litter alone, I checked with ODOT and nearly 4 million was spent on litter control--and this is an ongoing needed job---but if all the wonderful drivers out there who chose to use their car window for a trash receptacle, would learn what a garbage can is for, maybe that 4 million can be spent in other ways to offer alternative transportation options.

  11. OMG! It IS Star Wars!!!... I forgot to mention how pathetic looking the sterile lake looks. I can assure that they will remove all essential pond bank plants/habitats to create a sterile chemically laden lawn look--which ultimately will wreak havoc in them trying to keep that watering hole healthy--as it collects runoff. The sterileness of it perfectly reflects the personalities of all those who were a part of bringing it there and who designed it. I hope the good 'ole folks at eaton are reading this thread.
  12. ^^That is not what I meant to imply. Animals/habitats represented will not be deformed, rather the displays would represent habitats as they might have looked before settlement...OR, they will represent high quality habitats. This, because so often we're used to seeing them in their maligned state. By seeing what they should be, we can see them for what they could be.
  13. That's a very good qustion. Well, hopefully we can help educate the public on How and WHY those fish became that way, how these habitats are linked globally and essential to our very own lives.......so that we don't allow it to happen again......and so that we may promote a better stewadship and vision/perception of our local aquatic resources, as more than a human induced toxic waste toilet that produced such fish. Afterall, e only save what we love......and we only love what we know. Awwww---men! :-o

  15. A side effect of the ultimate cost levied to society of poor or no regulation on polluters, or them exercising little if any social responsibility/accountability. So, in the future...we live and learn...and some may want to be a bit more selective on their 'de-regulation' agenda. Not all regulation is "evil!" Moreso, it is to have a private tyranny to do as it wishes with no accountability, under the honest and noble guise of good business. In the long run, few have gained from the outcome as described in 'gottaplan's' post.
  16. In addition to the world aquatic ecosystems....The significance/importance of the local ecosystems would be adequately represented and portrayed as never seen and perceived by locals!

  18. Well if your talking about the powerhouse and this idea yes, but the former (being the second one) no. Cleveland Aquarium and Great Lakes Aquarium that is. They both seem similar, as in their passion for building a quality aquarium. So as X mentioned what is the difference/relationship... and why dont they just merge to form one stronger and more likely group? I am talking about the Jacob's thing.

  20. Now I hope we can all see the difference between the former...and this. Speaks for itself. They are dedicated/passionate people on a mission and will get this done. Let's be patient. We can be proud of this and not eventually embarrassed by hastily made plans that could leave a sour taste in the mouths of the public about an aquarium--as an aquarium is not just an aquarium! Please share the website with everyone you know...any donation helps.
  21. Looks like a sort of fast food place...but anything is better than the current "credit union" style Cleveland station we're forced to live with.
  22. I hate the noise, excessive, that is....... Bad for the digestion and I see no way how it is supposed to enhance my meal. There is a such thing as subtle background noise, but when it is full on and in your face...one cannot diferentiate between a night club/bar and a restaurant. Too many restaurants have hopped on this "let's blare the music" agenda under some kind of unproven idea that it will help their business more quickly turnaround. It just makes me turn around.....and never come back. It is not even tasteful background ambiance...it is loud and in-your-face and obnoxious! No one asks for it and I would bet that I can find many more people who turned around and walked out of a place because it was too noisy...than those who turned around and left because it wasn't noisy enough. Few are exposed anymore to what is a classy, semi quiet and quality dinner anymore...where you can actually engage in conversation with your company without shouting, and the meal speaks for itself and does all the selling needed. A place can be busy, but it doesn't have to sound like an open Italian fish market with people screaming over the noise levels. What is a joke is when thumping music is playing in a place already loud with conversation---and the room's acoustics make it to where the music sounds like nothing but thumping. Who needs that? I find it quite disturbing that so many seem to be addicted to it and know nothing else. God I miss Top O' The Town!

    Peeve: When people add an "s" to "Anyway" and make it "Anyways" UGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! This has seemed to have caught on in the last few years or so, and its simply ignorant.
