Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
I disagree, they should sell whatever their customers are requesting, which most likely will be the residents at 668, that can make a profit. If they want lottery tickets and booze then so be it, if they want tofu and organic milk so be it. The propritor should be able to choose his wares that will result in a profit for his venture. Then if you want more panhandling, loitering and the walks tattered with litter..........so be it! we already have scores of that type of store. Where is the catering to those who actually would buy more quality goods like freshly baked breads, produce, or things that sustain the daily needs of the home? I just see an imbalance of the former type of store versus the latter.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The sad thing about cutting the services is that we are left with few other options than to take a car...thus furthering the idea that public transport here needn't be funded as it should. Then, the car habit becomes worse. Vicious cycle.

Cleveland: Whiskey Island Coast Guard Station Redevelopment
Good use would be a maritime museum/visitor/environmental science center that would serve as the terminus for the TP trail. Great field trip for schools.

Ohio Gross Metropolitan Product: 3-C's + Pbgh & Indy
Good point. Akron needs to be included. Other metro areas are looked at like that...this one should be. This is a region of cities all stitched together forming one giant quiltwork of economic interdependence. Greater Cleveland needs to include Akron too...

For Clifton to lose service would be an utter shame and really embarrassing.

Jackson, Mississippi
Jackson has an awesome nature center and public aquarium focusing on the gulf and Mississippi river eco-systems. It is first class. HUGE aquarium some 18 feet high by 30 feet long by 15 feet wide that is a replica of a riverbank habitat in the Mississippi with humongous Alligator Gar, Bowfin, Paddlefish, Sturgeon and much more.... all prehistoric river monsters!

Pet Peeves!
^ Absolutely correct. Very poor communication and interpersonal skills. All of us have done this now and then....sometimes I still catch myself saying "umm.." But I hate it and know its wrong.....and even more so when I started doing announcing. Basically, it is just filling up dead airspace until the next thought comes....so, one is better off saying nothing. Interviews with sports figures are full of this sort of thing. One or two in a long interview...live...is tolerable...But over and over and over again is really poor. Sometimes it is purposely used in sarcasm, as in the photo above. Another statement for the introduction of a thought I am tired of is this one: "ITS LIKE!"

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
An ice skating area would be nothing new to the square. I like it. It used to be seasonal. Now it is at UC. The one thing people are forgetting too...is that if you want to add more people and a broader demographic, then the place has to feel very inviting. Right now, after certain hours many have a fear perception of the square...the loitering, litter, the sometimes aggressive panhandling and bad behavior when school lets out near bus stops, I have witnessed 'hand passing' ......that is all obviously a deterrent to attracting more of the kind of pedestrian traffic you want... family oriented activity, people working, etc. As long as their is that perception, it will not attract more of what it lacks. People have to feel safe all the time and there needs to be an incentive to attract them there, aside from new businesses.... some attractions that will add to a reason to come there.. Even the observation deck was good for P.S.---and that alone is not a one thing cure all.... No...but it was an example of one of the elements that can be an attraction for family to come downtown. But, as we know....its not there right now.

Pet Peeves!
Nooooo! I read this sentence out loud, and now my ears are bleeding! That brings up another pet peeve. Some people can't more than three words without throwing in the phrase "you know." Example: "I went you know, outside to you know, get my mail, and you know, I saw you know, my neighbor." I'm not making this up. I really feel like responding with something like "No, I really don't know. That's why you're telling me!" Yes. I don't think they even know what they mean because they have not quite learned enough words in their language to quite articulate what they mean... You know what I mean! :-D Here is a new peeve.... You're sitting at a light and wanting to turn left...the light turns green and instead of proceeding forward to get into position to make the left turn, the car in FRONT of you remains right where it is....soooooo....this means if the light changes again before they can make the turn, you have to sit through the whole process all over again. You're supposed to proceed forward into the intersection to get ready to make the turn. Another.... when you see a car parked in a busy road for moments at a time having some sort of tea party chit chat....with its operator seemingly expecting the whole world to wait. Sometimes you cannot get around and have no choice.. the car is not stalled, they are not asking for directions, but just chit chatting fr to long...instead of pulling over to engage in their social. If you toot or say c'mon...even after a reasonable time to allow for this thing.... you are scorned with "BLP.. YOU" as though YOU are in the wrong.

327 said... "Our goals may not be as easily obtainable as we'd like, but failing to pursue them locks us into a fate that nobody wants. True leadership stands against outside forces and seeks the best possible chance to beat those odds. It drives me crazy when people describe market forces like some angry thunder-god, against which we can only cower and beg. Market forces are simply an amalgamation of human decisions... and it's time for us to start making courageous, disciplined, forward-thinking decisions around here." AMEN to that!

I hope the convenient store will not sell lottery or brown bag booze.

Cleveland: Weston / Gilbane Warehouse District Plans
I understand all that because we've largely become auto controlled---built lives around needs of cars and not pedestrians. However, even if we are going to have all this parking...Please...No surface lots... decks better with some street level usable business/retail space. But surface lots... Blahhhh!!! Where is the interest to develop this space? I'm just saying you'd think such spots would be approached more aggressively.

I hope a lot of all these great ideas and suggestions are reviewed by those who would be doing the project.

Panhandling/Scamming stories
Nice story! Great to remember all that in such description too. Sad for her.... Seems she was the real deal, alright. Good on you! I would offer to buy food too....take them to a grocery store and get real food....no fast foods and make sure they ate as you did. I have always been refused that offer.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Etheostoma Caeruleum replied to peabody99's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThis will be one hell of a trail and enhancement of the community. I like the physical fitness component such things encourage for a city too, aside from the positive environmental aspects. Such helps foster a healthier population which can lead to producing a quality and more productive workforce..and ultimately better widgets! :-D

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
^ Very nice description, indeed. They used to have ice skating on Public Square. Great idea and activity that attracts a family friendly crowd. That being said is a lot better than what the square becomes after nightfall. I mentioned somewhere that this plan should include a skating area.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Good question! Maybe a worldwide one...open to even those right here.... Let them battle it out... But with added input from those in the community who will use it a lot...or would like to see it more pedestrian oriented.

Yikes! Clearchannel being put into a position to look like a pillar member of the core Cleveland community. By the way, what will go on the ground level? Any shops, etc?

Panhandling/Scamming stories
There are some noticeable hot spots downtown besides the square, only. They hang around 4th....a lot and where you mentioned. Didn't Cleveland propose a voucher system a long time ago? I remember hearing of it. Also, I have to drive through downtown a lot for work reasons. I have the police programmed on my phone and anytime I am at a light and if I happen to witness aggressive panhandling, I immediately call the police to at least let them know. If they get more calls about a certain instance they will be more present. Just presence sometimes helps. I also noticed as I made rounds for about an hour, a group loitering around a business on a Saturday. Harmless maybe...but cautious I am..not paranoid...and let the police know about this too. The fact that there was no bus stop...nothing open..I could not find any reason why anyone would be standing around there that long. Looking out windows more....watching your neighbors and getting involved with block watch can help curb aggressive situations, or prevent them. Harmless maybe, but I get tired of walking down Euclid, near 12th and being boldly approached like this with the same lame story. Last week I told the person... "Hey.. I'M working this side of the street!"

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
^ What does this "even" mean? Uh...well, its quite self explanatory... Yes, indeed, so many times a big project happens, New York and Chicago are referenced as though they are the only two cities on the planet that matter or can offer a progressive idea/standard. I am not at all suggesting their ideas are not of value and worth--or worth emulating. Just a bit over the same tired references... and time to get off the stage with them and broaden the horizons. Yes, they're wonderful places but how much ego stroking do they need in the media? That's just how I interpret such things. I have nothing against them, as I used to live in New York with my sister for a fair while (Staten Island-Bard Avenue)--have cousins in Chi-town. You don't have to share my interpretation if you don't want and I am not saying that such was the intended message...and NO, it does not necessarily mean we use a pool of designers strictly from the area, but if there are some good ones, I see nothing wrong with tapping into local talent and spending the money here with local businesses. Maybe a combination can be done---Or do we want New York/Chicago to forever hold our hands and cradle us along as though we are incapable of coming up with something original? Overall, what I expressed simply means taking a good idea and trying to make it even better...add something strictly unique so that when someone comes and see it, they're not saying "Oh...this reminds me of place 'x' " ...and instead say.. "Wow! I have not seen anything quite like this!" Let's have a space that others will envy instead of the other way around all the time. We can set a standard and not simply follow. (not that following is always a a bad thing, either) Now is the chance to make that happen. Its about adding distinctive elements....and I believe I have mentioned many that could contribute to such, throughout similar threads. The fact that the question is posed "What is our own thing?" is a good one, and seems to suggest that maybe we better find/discover it...or get in touch with ourselves as a city that can be more than sports, mills, bars or any other thing that has us economically type-cast, or stereo-typed. Again, I have offered ideas as to what can add to that element of distinction, but maybe its not mainstream enough. I don't know.
