Cleveland: Downtown Storefront Displays
Thanks McCleve...Great photo. That stay lit at night too. There will be two more finished this week... The Prospect one and Star Plaza window. Weather and help has delayed things a bit for about a week. But for sure, things will be done this week. We released a press release...and I am able to handle any other contacts our volunteers pass along for new sites.

UrbanOhio - Edgewater Beach Group Cleanup
I have been in contact with The Sierra Club about helping with clean-ups with Friends of Edgewater. Pat McKenna, a contact for Sierra Club had this to say: "We can post the clean-up on Saturdays in our newsletter starting next spring. Our Nov/Dec is already in production and you won't be hosting the clean-up in Jan/Feb. Please remind me in early February and we'll make sure we put something in the newsletter. Pat" Remember: Fourth Saturday at 11:00 AM -- 1:00 PM

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
^ shouldn't any surface be cleaned before a coating is applied? If not, its kind of like carpet installers not cleaning the floor underneath before the carpet is installed and chucking or leaving cigarette buts under it. I have see that happen.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^ I understand what you're saying...and Yes, an angle that is a bit to the back of the ball looking forward would create an illusion.... I thought the same thing... But, it even looked far enough to be difficult for such an illusion to be present. I still think that was a blown call. Oh...and Hines Ward...wipe that stupid grin off your face!

Painting over terra cotta? That's just brilliant! Even if it is a special paint that holds up well. Ugh! The way follow up goes on on-going maintenance in this city. (the "restore it once and its good for life and never do another thing" mentality) I give this not very long before it shows signs of lack of follow up and ongoing needed maintenance. Hope I am wrong, but just looking at other situations as a gauge. Its the little things that count and the little things that get neglected the most. It could be something as simple as failing to change a light bulb for 2 years on facade lighting, or leaving dead plants/trees in planters.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Congratulations Der-WRECK BLAND-erson and company for losing again to Pitt. While I did not expect them to win, it is really pathetic how The Steelers---an average team with a bit above average talent--in my opinion, are made to look so good, EVEN when they look bad! Again, 0 offense results in defense eventually caving. UGH! Execute..execute...execute.. Get the basics and fundamentals down, like catching swing passes for example. By the way....Thanks Josh... you are more talented than the entire Pittsburgh team, but you cannot do it all alone! And not that it would have made much difference, but how can you blow the call on the measurement like that??!! Little things like that change the tide....ebb and flow and chemistry of the game. Now what is really embarrassing is to see idiots in Cleveland wearing Steelers attire. Its one thing to not want to deal with this team (Browns) until they are ready to show something... But in the meanwhile to jump on a Pitt. bandwagon, which many do, is absurd and pathetic.

Lonely Planet - Cities You Really Hate
Newsflash: Any economic system left unwatched or held accountable to behave with some social responsibility can become just as corrupt and dictatorial as any other form we in this country have been conditioned to think is "evil" or "inferior" And before we go pushing Capitalism on the rest of the world and beyond, we may want to prove that it works sustainably within our own borders first. I wonder how many who are so critical of other nations have actually lived among the people and not visited as just a tourist. Our flag may as well have the Golden Arches donning it flanked by Shell and Exxon. That is how a dictatorship takes form here and what is sad is that most cannot see it because they're too brainwashed to think that the big machine is their benefactor and only life source. It is really utterly sad. I cannot have this discussion with 95% of the people here though because they're too brainwashed. In Italy, Australia, or France I have no problem conveying the idea. (Cousins in Italy/Good friends in France/Oz) There are things we can learn that are valuable from many parts of the world, that we can implement here. Its all about weeding out the good and what can be fruitful and leaving the rest; picking the best apples from trees around the world, so to speak, and Singapore has some good models of a cleaner city I'd like to see here. Basically just enforcing rules...But here we are so used to having rules/laws go unenforced---because we used to rely on common sense for people to respect---that when we finally DO enforce something, people see it as some sort of encroachment on their freedoms, when in reality, they were never entitled in the first place.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
This will hurt this region more than help...and people are not delving deep enough to look at what will be the repercussions that are never discussed...and will not be. Sort of in the same fashion that a Wal-Mart/sprawl is looked at in bringing in jobs, taxes, and so on...But no one ever talks about the jobs and taxes LOST from the independent/locally owned economy...which if you do the homework, you will see they offer nothing the propaganda suggests. Its a trade off that has us surrendering a local identity and soverignty to homogenization and pitty poop jobs. Those who promote this sort of agenda and think they're being visionary are actually taking a short sighted side. MTS is also correct about what he said about measuring a city's success by its sports. That is not a gauge and the last thing we should be doing. We may want to adopt a more pro-academics mindset. I say this and I am a big sports fan and have played several, but still acknowledge the fact that we cannot allow this to become King to the point it holds our city by the balls to get whatever it wishes. I don't want my economy built around either. It is a desperate act of drawing straws, lack of patience and creative thought.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Nice story. It often takes a viewpoint from the eyes of a total outsider to get the locals to see the positive and the negative, but its good this time as a visitor there was no disappointment. I wish more of the English would invest in Cleveland. They do in Florida. It would be good to get some fresh English accents around here and maybe even some long forgotten traditional social graces!

Cleveland: Perception Issues
Too much of Cleveland. Oh, maybe I forgot to add the M.Mart thing too. These stories drone on like a depressing church chorus. Oh well, one thing could be certain...through it all, we could be a leader in producing the sickest population... May be good for Med Mart products.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
We're already economically type-cast a sports town and that we can be nothing more....through the eyes of many. I said it a hundred times...Cleveland needs to stop banking all its hopes on LeBron and casinos to save the day. They will not. Uniqueness and building individual character and identity for your city though creative ideas and contributions from individuals, entrepreneurs, etc.. will. Trust in the spirits of such and give them the breaks to help make a really diverse economy that will breed stability. Contrary to popular myth, Lebron and casinos are of interest to a small minority when viewed against a world backdrop. The world really doesn't give two hoots about LeBron, whether we win a championship... or some po-dunk casino here.....And if you have bigger sights like making this an internationally attractive city... You have to offer more than a casino where obese Wal-Mart customers with hip huggers, a crispy outdated hairdo, and flip flops will be spending rolls of pennies at the slot machines...that is, if you don't want to be once again, economically type cast as such..... as your new identity. The fact that so much of the mid west has bought onto this thing as their savior looking from the outside in...is laughable and shows a lack of vision and creativity. Soooo...beacon something really different to the nation and to the world...don't play copy cat and follow the crowd/bandwagon...and then you will see some special things happening more. Don't build your economy around that which produces dysfunction and poor health, body, mind, spirit. ie: Tobacco industry, booze, gambling, fast food, big box stores flooding the market with cheap Chinese plastic crap. That won't attract the higher quality stake holders or visitors with real cash to spend. Also, get the industry converted to green collar.... re-invent.

Just another note on this... they are getting done. Same scenario I mention above has delayed things a bit. But, it would be nice to get some photos snapped when they're finished.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
I laugh when I hear the notion that people actually think these casinos will be some sort of draw for vacationers or high end rollers with cash to burn. If many of the major cities have them...and the surrounding states as well..... What is the incentive to go see basically the same thing, whether in state of from out of state? Most of the patrons will be locals and many of those will be spending their last pennies at the slots thinking they're going to hit pay dirt. Kind of like the mentality that banks on the lottery win to end one's problems. Bottom line is this is not economic development that is sustainable and fosters a healthy populace. We should not rely on building an economy around situations that breed dysfunction. Onl;y a few really benefit in the long run, and the costs to all are often hidden but visually evident in society. The aspiration for all this is very average and non-creative. Let's be forced by the gaming industry---we who they see as desperate for any work that comes along at any cost---to join a bandwagon that says "If you don't do this you're losing money" We should not have had to rely on this for any money source to begin with. It'll probably pass this time because the deception is so great... But I have again, already voted a big fat NO!

Lonely Planet - Cities You Really Hate
Yeah, but the city is one of the cleanest and most progressive in many other ways. Maybe we can learn from that. I loved it there. Instead, too often is the attitude here (USA) that we chose to sit on our laurels and never move on to the next step.

Cleveland: Perception Issues
^ I have always talked about the 'west is best, east is least' attitude. I don't like it because essentially, for thinking that, they become small minded in their own right. And yes, it would be good to support the things we say we like about the city. For me this means supporting local/independent businesses that give the city a unique identity...or any city, for that matter. I refuse to support sprawl entities at all costs, if for nothing else, but to preserve the character/independence of my city. On a related note... I often sigh and shake my head to the attitudes towards some of this nation's 'original big cities' which contributed so much to shaping the country. At least give places like Cleveland/Detroit the respect they deserve in that way. In a sense, anyone who supports preservation no matter where they live, cannot help but care about these cities in the sense that they are a part of the nation's history in a big way. Instead, too many forget thoughts like that and instead chose to kick sand in the face.

Lonely Planet - Cities You Really Hate
Geologically speaking... I like Kauai the best as it is the oldest island (above water) and most ornately sculpted by nature. The Waimea Canyon... and the little towns that dot the perimeter of the island... The Na Poli coast... etc.. I could live there with no problem.... But some development is beginning to spoil some places on it.

HA!!! Yeah, I wonder!

Lonely Planet - Cities You Really Hate
Yes, but the city is virtually void of any charming architecture. 80- degrees every day actually does get old for some people. It has great entertainment, etc...but All the little cozy hotels that beacon back to the days when the place had a real island feel are gone; replaced by the imposing hotel towers. Don't get me wrong, I like it for what it is... Kauai is great, on the other hand...still kind of like 'old Hawaii'

Cleveland Cemeteries
Hello people, I am a fan of old cemeteries, and Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland is in my opinion an underrated gem. I volunteered to help any way I could to help in the restoration of the cemetery with the introduction of some Ohio native plant, plantings....and doing a quick narrative overview of the history of the cemetery to help attract other doers and enthusiasts. It is not perfect and likely not 100% accurate, but the point is to attract more involvement in the cemetery, and awareness, so that it can continue to improve. Below is the link to the MP3. If interested in helping....please write down the contact details at the end of the pod-cast. Thanks! http://www.noiseoff.org/media/woodland.cemetery.mp3

Cleveland: Perception Issues
This is true. As for our reputation, we have many right here in the area who are the city's worst enemy. They project pity so much to the point people start believing it... who may have otherwise had no opinion of the city.... Bottom line is that if you act like a loser and keep projecting it, that's what people will think of you. We need a major dose of more civic pride. You needn't be monetarily wealthy to have this pride. Its free!
