Cleveland: Homeless News & Discussion
When they offer me the jingling change cup I simple reply... "Ohhh..that's mighty generous of you, but no thanks...YOU keep it!" Or, "Hey buddy.. I'm working this side of the street!" The reactions are priceless... Once I even pitched a copy of a field guide to survival identifying and foraging for wild foods in the city, like berries, fruits, nuts, and even small game.

Cleveland: Controlling Neighborhood Nuisances
I just read the last few posts here. I will say again, I do not have a problem with a respectable club that does not cater to...or draw, the kinds of traffic that eventually leads to the night in and out problems which were described above. But, the bottom line is that if you place a salt lick out for the deer...you attract deer... Thistle seed...you will attract song birds... Bloodworms, you will attract Rainbow Darters (btw..very good 'regarcia!) cheese...you attract a mouse....CRAP...you attract flies. You cater to the poet of limited vocabulary...you reap what you sow.. Point being, you attract what you put out..and if you put out items that are known associates with attracting a certain element, you get what you [pay for. This is not to say ALL people who would attend such a place are ALL going to get involved with trouble, but the history has proven that such a place that was Moda, does and WILL attract a quite a few bad sparks that can lead to causing the fire of trouble. Its all very simple, common sense and academic. Apologists can excuse it all they want, but the end results are undeniable. And Jborger... You are right.... all it takes is one incident like that to start a bad image and that's really sad... But the goings on at that other place were far from one crazy person and one or a few incidents. Bars who excuse, pass the buck... their social/ethical responsibilities for what happens a mere foot over the 'line' are in denial. They are indeed a part of the problem and need to exercise some social responsibility, as a neighbor in the community, just as anyone else would who say... invites someone over for dinner, a party. If those guests are frequently invited over and keep acting like idiots in and out of the house... Yes, they are personally responsible, but legally, the home owner is setting themselves up for a potential civil suit from neighbors. I have sued someone in the past for this scenario and have won. You are responsible for the behavior of guests on your property as well as the individual acting up is. The fact that these trouble makers are far enough off the property to constitute the bar taking some responsibility--eventhough the trouble makers spent all night in the bar getting drunk..well, there is where the difficulty comes in. But I have a suggestion, let's try this... Lets open up a classy dinner club that limits alcohol.... but offers a paid RSVP'd dinner and a dance 20's to 40's style big band/jazz/swing...ages 25 to 55....where you get all decked out in time period clothing and.... I'll make a thousand dollar bet that the crowd that such a place would attract will not cause the kinds of problems that such places like Moda attracted, even if just a few. It would instead be a crowd that is looking for something nostalgic to do, a diverse one younger and older......something different...and no, I don't think we'd have to worry about Al Capone showing up as anything more than just someone dressing up like him. I think they'll leave the real guns at home. There ya go....set something up that is a bit more mature and classy for a wide age range. Invite The Squirrel Nut Zippers to play and the local N.E. Ohio swing band.. "The Top Notes", to play. There you will have a venue that pays tribute to a great era we all romanticize today. Might be the best thing to do with the place. Oh, and please...don't be the first person to tell me that such an era didn't have its trouble makers! Duh... I'm smart enough to realize that, but its not the point.

Yes, and it is tempting to make an offer. That is a great spot. Love it. The art work installations on that property and the Star Plaza one will begin this week. They were actually started already...its just about installing it.

I Bought Something at Wal-Mart That Was Made in America
Hate this place with a passion.... phooey on them... I don't know why so many people think they have to be apologetic towards them. Brainwashed into thinking they're our benefactor. Instead of "buy American" these days, which hardly anything is made here...the least we can do is BUY LOCAL, but I doubt the Sprawl-Mart apologists, or anyone who has never run an independent business would understand the meaning or importance of that.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
It really all boils down to a major issue among others.... the inability to stop the 3rd and long. 3rd and 14. 3rd and a lifetime and they still cannot stop it.... did better yesterday in a few instances of such, but when it counted the most...3rd and 14...they caved.

Thanks to both of you....I know that turned out to be a big one--more than anticipated... Yes, let's recruit more help... 327...Where are you! I know he said he had a wedding... We will make sure there is some extra help if there is ever anything like that again. I tried to get Andrew to help but he could not on Saturday, but is available for the future. I would have even helped myself had I not had the Edgewater sweep on the same day. :-( This one is finished. It is now up to Vicky, Jack, and company to load in the art... I am still waiting to hear what a possible Ohio Shawnee Indians art display would consist of in one of the future windows. Yes, that is a swell building. $500,000 is the asking price! Rosemary was actually very moved to see this enthusiasm for this project, and she will be a great reference. Thank You again. The work IS being noticed--and I think when we see the outcomes of the windows, we'll all be pleased. I will see about getting some nice photos taken of them so people here on the forum can see.

Most all of Cleveland's historic street names were changed between 1905 and 1906. W. 25th was indeed Pearl Street (and it still is Pearl once you get south of 71). Some of the other notables include W. 9th St = Water Street, W. 6th St = Bank St., Euclid Ave = Buffalo Rd. (Because it lead to Buffalo), E. 4th St. = Sherriff St., E. 6th St = Bond St. (North of Euclid) & Miami St. (From Prospect to Bolivar), E. 9th St = Erie St.... and on and on... I'd LOVE it if we brought those names back, at least in the core... at any rate... VERY cool video, thanks for posting. I agree totally.. I would love to see these names come back to the core. They add character and identity. Why were they changed to numbers, anyway?

Doc and X are doing a great job preparing the storefronts. A press release should go out this week..and if anyone gets a chance... go on Huron Rd downtown and pass the Hallee building and see the window with the Jerry Schmidt art. Looks great, especially at night...shows the obvious difference in having nothing in the window.

CLEVELAND - First photo thread of the fall
I like the warehouse photo. I was near there today and thought that place would make a fabulous conversion to residences. It is one of the few subtly ornate industrial warehouses.

^ Tempting! I only wish we were that serious and passionate about how serious the problem is and how it is linked to so many others that people do not chose to understand. Some idiot in Australia threw down a smoldering cigarette butt near the bushland and it contributed to ravaging bush fires that destroyed the lives, properties of hundreds of people, wildlife, and cost untold millions in damage. This has been done purposefully sometimes...I certainly wouldn't give him a slap on the wrist, and they're not. Albeit, not as dramatic, but what we witness today, on a slower scale, left unabated, can cause severe problems in their own way, economically, socially, environmentally. Btw...look forward to your helping next time. If anyone never got a chance to watch this short video...check it out... very compelling... http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=598914

Wait 'til you see the photos Hubz took. All I can say is everyone who came to this today worked their tails off. And if the photos to come do not send a disturbing message that we have a serious problem that needs immediate and regular attention, I don't know what else it will take. The photos and comments should be shared with ODNR, Councilmen such as Cimperman, Zone, etc.... The PD, The City, and so on. I am contacting the state again to discuss new priorities and applying them on this first and foremost issue. I really encourage as many UO'ans to get on board with this to illicit some change...and especially some change in the business as usual lack of management/care for this part at the ODNR level. When you get down and dirty like this and up close and personal to the issue, there is no denying that there is no more room for excuses for this kind of treatment of such a delicate and fragile resource-Our freshwater, our biggest asset! We want to give more access to the water, when those who have access to it now still do not know how to take care of it. There is no Lone Ranger coming to save the day on this... The Lone Ranger is YOU--all of us....and getting those at the top to start doing a better job in managing the problem on areas they should be focusing on, requires many of us to make them care about it. The discussion Chris and I had with a Ranger and park maintenance employee made it clear that we need some change in attitude. If a city of 5 million like Sydney, with many walks of life visiting the beach, can leave virtually no traces of litter along their hundreds of miles of coastal area, then why can't we do it with a mile!? Maybe its time we adopt other cities philosophies which are working and good examples, or even the German model. Sorry, but what we witnessed today was a pitiful disgrace and we must mend this problem. Say whatever, but we made a positive start. This day fired me up.... Many HUGE thanks to all who came out today. Let's keep it rolling!!! Ok, I'm calm now.

Cincinnati: Is a bottle deposit possible under the city charter?
Yes, CFL bulbs do contain mercury, but you must consider that coal-burning power plants also release mercury into the environment. Using an incandescent bulb actually releases more mercury into the environment because it uses more energy. Generally, without question....It takes more energy to keep extracting raw materials to covert them into new items than to reduce/re-use/recycle, depending on the product. We don't recycle at all...we have a place full of holes from mining...and that in itself presents a whole new ball game of environmental damage, so you cannot account for all the variables. Still, Anyone can come up with data that suggests it is cheaper to toss away, but funny how I find that logic only pervasive in the US amongst those in denial about the state of the environment here ....and I guess the data outcome depends upon who's payroll those producing it, are on. I think Ohio really does need to get a bottle bill going.... Maybe this would help get some of the plastic litter off our roadways, and nout of our water resources. Roughly, ODOT spent over 4 million last year cleaning up crap that mostly came from idiots who don't know what a trash can/recycle can is for...and don't have enough brains to wait til they get to one. I wonder where we could have spent 4 million, instead of cleaning up after the lack of common sense. Just look around, its everywhere and very taxing on the environment. Check out a special that 60 Minutes Australia did on all this last year. It was shocking and downright disgraceful to see where this stuff is ending up. Did we not learn something when the Indian cried in the commercial over 40 years ago?

I do too... I looked at the old photos of many of these buildings and loved the awnings... Maybe the colors could be different...
