Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
Very good idea. It would be good to use a lot of indigenous plants to reduce the need for watering/artificial chemicals and other energy depleters. Maybe some "Cleveland's natural heritage" plants. Will be nice to see this finished---and most of all, I hope follow up is taken into account, as so many projects that involve small planters/trees, seem to lack the follow up, and they end up dying, or being trampled.

Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh Passenger Rail Service
Youngstown/Warren would definitely need a connection. Many people there commute into the city.. (Cleveland) all the time for various reasons and have really no other option but to drive. Again, when I had to go out that way when my friend was here from Oz... She was really surprised the two areas were not currently linked. But the way Warren is so bass akwards in their politics in every conceivable way, if it does by-pass, it would be their own fault. (I am originally from there..and it has become so auto dependent..and it may as well look more like a Westlake than a small historic satellite city to the S.E. Of Cleveland)

Cool Post Card Photo Of Playhouse Square, Cleveland!
I see your point. When I look at it, I see a time that not many today, especially young people, had the chance to see. The whole downtown experience. Rather, most are used to driving to a parking lot and going into a mall. I think it could set a standard for trying to achieve similar foot traffic again in the urban core. I look at it and become inspired, and see things for what they could become....but that's just me. It serves as a reminder that we all knew how to live in the city and take transit, walk, etc.. to show people what they see now, in driving all over the place, has not always been 'the way it is' as some may think. I do, however totally get it when people may look at it and think "we'll never be great again" or some similar notion.

Downtown Detroit in Danger of Demolition
Sad. Seems as though its just really about feeding the pockets of the demolition industry. I wonder if anyone received kickbacks. Lots of money made in demolition. I am sure a vacant gravel lot will look very attractive, though. :x

Cool Post Card Photo Of Playhouse Square, Cleveland!
This is a reproduction post card I bought a while back. Did anyone ever see this photo? I think it is brilliant! If you play some Ragtime music, like the kind from the movie "Ragtime"... and stare into the photo, I swear you almost feel you can become a part of it! Look at all the people walking! Also notice that the streetcars take pretty much the same path as the Healthline vehicles. I say this because I hear some people complaining about how "inconvenient" it is for them to drive with these Healthline vehicles on the road.... But see...One time Clevelanders must have known how to drive and co-exist with streetcars! As for the music and staring into the photo (which is much larger on my computer, so open up the attachment and enlarge), indeed.. I am that big of a post card geek!

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I think that is a good idea. I don't fake tan, nor do I really understand the orange glow some prefer to get from it, but tanning beds are in demand among young people. I think they are planning a tanning salon for the 668 building, which is just down the street from E.4th. This can be a good idea, but in a prime space such as 4th and Euclid, I am not so sure that would be the place. That's a large space and a showcase space...and I would like to think we can showcase something a bit more than tanning spas. Not to downplay the idea...as I am not, but that can be implemented more in a gym environment already downtown. Maybe they can offer expanded facilities for such. E. 4th is also for visitors and I doubt the latest tanning spa will beacon to them and have them arriving in droves. Isn't there a spa in the Arcade? Or is that just massage, etc?... I suggested, if it is going to be food/drink oriented, then one element lacking at 4th is an exclusive vegetarian establishment that specializes in this cuisine art (not just a place with veg, options as an afterthought, but exclusive with exclusive veg chefs) such as Vegeterranean in Akron, Ice Cube in Youngstown. The best I have ever been to was Blossoming Lotus on the island of Kauai. As for functional places to serve the needs of residents, we could always use another nice higher end grocer...(preferably no chains) or even a 'fresh food district' (produce) eventhough WSM isn't far and the farm markets come, still...another fruit market, bakery, etc. is due, offering local foods whenever possible and when in season. This would be good AS LONG AS, it would not put the markets already downtown out of business. Can the downtown sustain it, is the question. There is already a Daves, Constantinos, The place in Reserve Square, etc. Could we have room for one more smaller store? Even a small hardware store that caters to the quick needs of residents who would want to walk 5-10 minutes away, and do not necessarily enjoy walking in a huge Home Depot type place more suited for building a house, to pick up a few things..... and would rather, prefer a place to pick up the basic needs, like light bulbs, extension cords pails, cleaning supplies, batteries, simple plumbing needs like washers, spigots, etc...basic tools, some paints, etc. My idea is having it a comfortable balance between offering the attractions for visitors, and the essential needs for residents to make it functional. There are a lot of needs served there...a few more would make it just right. I know there ARE some suppliers like this on the near east side, but they're more for contractors and such.

On Top Of Sydney Harbour: Standing on top of the famous Harbour Bridge!
Thanks for the comments. I have more photos from the city I may post. Re: The Det/Sup Bridge, Yes, it would be cool. On the Harbour Bridge, they allow you to take photos (I thought..but come to think of it, I was too busy watching my step because some of this was terrifying!) Their was actually an additional walk way as wide as a sidewalk for most of this climb. Where we are standing in the photo, was not at the top. The tippy top was by where the flags are on the top. I thought a couple flags atop the Det/Sup Bridge would be a nifty addition too. What most cannot see in mostly all of the photos of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the very long approaches with arches similar to the Stone Bridge in the Flats...and there are offices and stores inside that part of the bridge...and it is also where you have to take what seems like 20 minutes suiting up. There were about 10 other people on this particular climb. One other note, I think there was only one death during construction...and on that space between the stone pylons and the steel, it is about 25 feet, but in pictures it looks like a tiny slither between the stone and steel. If you look at the buildings in the background, you can see the top of the Center Point Tower...a revolving OB tower with restaurant. It is that gold looking thing similar in style to the CN tower.

I know what the modify button is and have been using it. I posted the second thought separately because it was an entirely different article. Is this such a terrible crime? I have been on here for not more than two weeks, so I'll get it.

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Projects & News
I must be viewing something really different because when I drive, which for traveling has been a lot, I see many trucks going well over 65. I just hope that when it is officially posted they can go a certain speed, that they're not going 15 miles over the posted limit...as I still see many doing now. I still maintain that there are simply too many trucks on these highways. Trains, not trucks. (for coast to coast and long distance shippings.) Would love to see it someday again.

Great story on J. Coleman. Her tours are really an ambitious undertaking. These are the kinds of efforts that add a lot to this community. I am currently working on a small narrative recording for the historic Woodland Cemetery.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
So am I. I find that too many Ohioans have no clue about anything their state has to offer. The old 'Ohio inferiority complex' that holds us back. The old 'you must move elsewhere' mentality. Too many project this negative image to others who would have had nothing negative to say otherwise......and guess what they end up thinking, then? People start to believe what people project of themselves or where they're from, whether it is true or not. I tend to think outside the box. If for example, the headlines read "Everyone Moving To Place 'X' " Then this tells me to do the opposite. But that is me, I never was a crowd follower.

CLEVELAND - Just another day...
Very good philosophy, as often a camera doesn't catch exactly what the eye saw at that particular second, so touching up a bit to re-capture what was seen the moment the camera clicked is to capture the truth of the second.

Cleveland: Catholic Diocese Church Closings
This is very shameful! So many of these churches are a great tribute to architecture and craftsmanship. The Bishop sounds really shady to me... He is really hurting that neighborhood with keeping a closed mind. Well, that's at least how I interpreted the article. Architectural sins. What example of fine old churches will there be left if this continues. These are some of the best buildings we have left! Insane! And in fact, I see it taking away a certain appeal to a neighborhood that draws people to live in it. So, if money talks in the end, I see removing such places as a sort of economic drain to a neighborhood.

Chicago: Developments and News
My brother would be the kind of joker who would walk out onto this thing and start jumping up and down and say something like.. "Ha!.. Let's test this thing and see how strong it really is!" Afterall, it is supposed to be strong enough to hold how many tons?

On Top Of Sydney Harbour: Standing on top of the famous Harbour Bridge!
The suits are for safety as required by city law. You get strapped to a track that prevents you from falling. There is really no way to fall with the gear they put you in...and the cloths also make it easier for the guide to see everyone. The planks you walk along though are as wide as a sidewalk. "The Rocks" neighborhood below the bridge on land is a really cool neighborhood. What little of historic Sydney left that is not covered by towers. Yes, if you get a chance, go.. It is a great place. Stay for 3 months if you can. Best and cheapest time to go is Now through September. I know a great travel agent who can get great prices.

On Top Of Sydney Harbour: Standing on top of the famous Harbour Bridge!
Haha! Funny! I love Cincinnati, but trust me, this bridge is much larger than anything that crosses the beautiful Ohio River... and the view from the top is spectacular. This photo doesn't do it justice.

Cleveland (Glenville) - East 105th Street
Interesting. I have always loved East Blvd along R. Park. That rally looks to be a nice area. I used to walk through the park and liked some of the brick road side streets as well.

Do you mean the largest/beautiful homes in the historic area of Glenville, or the place they don't want gentrification?

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Projects & News
Many truck drivers are not the 'good buddies' of courtesy they used to be. I have driven thousands of miles for work for many years as a field sales person. And from these experiences I have found that most of the time, trucks are either going too damn slow riding neck and neck with their brethren clogging other traffic and both lanes on purpose. ORRR.. they are driving maniac style and way tooo fast. I think if you leave the speed limits alone, BUT offer a tolerance of them to go 65, this would be better. Why? Because there is a psychological thing going on here: if you post 55, most will go 65 or higher already...in which case, just leave them alone.. NOW, if you post 65, they'll go a consistent 75 and 80 or higher... which is getting too fast. Ever have one of these, in the slower lane, ride your tail and bully you on the road? If I could help it, I would get all coast to coast...and whatever other direction, long distance shipping back on trains. One train can pull a 100 trucks. This means our rest areas won't be clogged with trucks at night spewing fumes all night long while idling... Less accidents, less fuel consumption, better roads, less money spending maintaining roads that get a pounding from such traffic. Our roads were never built to manage the types and amounts of truck traffic that has increased steadily over the years. This is why we have three lanes in many places of so called rural areas---to accommodate all this extra traffic. How costly it has been to funnel so much money toward this...but nothing towards promoting any other method of transport. The extra lane is basically for all the trucks. Ever see I-71 when it looks like one big train of trucks? I remember when the truck traffic was at least some 60% lighter. I shudder to think how fast they'll go on the PA Turnpike or on I-80 west through PA if they increased speeds! OMG! Fright flight in the making.
