  1. 6th St Mews phase two has its land cleared:
  2. A nice view of the Short North action. A ton to see all the way up to Ohio State! Further out: I had more but something is not going right with Flikr and I don't like sharing via Google Photos.
  3. I went up to the Rhodes Tower observation floor and have some pictures to share of various projects. Here is the NVMM with Gravity in the background: A close-up of the NVMM: A "before" shot of COSI and the Scioto Peninsula with River and Rich and Out of Town visible in the background:
  4. The Allied Works Architecture-designed National Veterans Memorial & Museum (NVMM) is rapidly rising on the shore of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus, Ohio, and is on track to open in July 2018. https://archpaper.com/2018/02/first-national-veterans-museum-completion-columbus-ohio/#gallery-0-slide-0
  5. Wouldn't this be a good time to build the Parkside on Pearl, too? What are they waiting for on that? I thought it was all approved...
  6. Would look a hell of a lot better if built to the original 17 story plan. It's too chunky at 12 floors.
  7. The print version had this map that may be easier to read than the interactive map on their website.
  8. In 2010 Columbus' urban area was 16% more dense than Cleveland's and 30% more dense than Cincinnati's. Of course Columbus had the smallest urban area of the three, but almost the entirety of its growth has been either in the urban area or in areas that will extend it in 2020's counts. All three Cs will have very similar urban area populations then, too.
  9. So this isn't affecting the large building with the green roofs to the east? I hope not - I think that bldg oozes with character and hope to see it fixed up and converted to another use. Nope, the Acorn development doesn't include that property. That property is between the Acorn site and the railroad tracks. It stretches from Second Ave to Fifth Ave and is 17.4 acres. It's owned by coffin maker Clark Grave Vault Co, founded in 1898. Not sure if that is still their manufacturing site, because every time I drive by it looks abandoned. Streetview from last October: https://goo.gl/maps/vW9n9Hvms3Q2
  10. Hopefully the large factory next door is redeveloped soon too. That thing is a giant eyesore.
  11. Dodge Park was just renovated a few years ago. It's also one of the only parks in Franklinton. A huge asset for that community. A big NO from me. Same with Berliner. A park that large and that is almost always packed every evening in the summer that close to the CBD is very valuable. No thank you to putting something used relatively rarely in those two spots. Abbott clearly stated they use that land and it's probably valuable to them to hold onto for possible different uses in the future. The southern part of Jeffrey Park would have been perfect. Probably no room for it now. Plus that neighborhood needs a park. The White Castle property would have been good. That's being developed differently now. If we're talking private property, how about the OSU and Spectrum property along Olentangy between Goodale and 3rd? The Scioto Peninsula would have been good. Perhaps they could work the same density in around a stadium. I think clearly the NRI or Shottenstein sites on W Nationwide are the best sites. Or renovating the current stadium, but how feasible is it to bring to current standards? Then you'd need the state to open the land around it to developers. How would that impact the fairgrounds business? Lots of options, none of them seem ideal for practical solutions...
  12. Looks like we'll see another tower crane soon - the tower crane base has been installed for the garage project. I was just wondering about this yesterday. Those pesky tower cranes just can't leave Columbus alone can they? ;) May we be cursed with more and more of them. :) The curse seems to have no end in sight! The View on Pavey Square was also approved for a tower crane.
  13. Enplanements =/= total pax Also you can find detailed passenger and cargo stats for LCK and CMH here, https://flycolumbus.com/flights/airline-stats I think enplanements is a more accurate marker then. Thanks for the clarification. Any info on the cargo numbers being so different? ETA I looked through the link. So "total cargo" and "landed cargo" are the two categories. You'd think total cargo would be higher like total passengers.
  14. Business First and the Dispatch said they were reporting on data released by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority - the group that oversees Rickenbacker and John Glenn airports. You'd think the FAA would have official numbers. They also reported only 102,751 enplanements at Rickenbacker for 2016.
  15. I'd like to know where CBF is getting their numbers. The CY 2016 ACAIS from the FAA shows that Rickenbacker landed 983,247,285lbs of cargo in 2016.
  16. I agree, but business guys don't. There's still money to be made by teams who don't win championships; even for 100 years. The Cubs didn't even play in a World Series for over 70 years before winning again. Yet they were plenty profitable. I want fewer teams though. Fewer teams mean better teams and better games. I'd like to see NCAA shrink D1 (FBS) football to 32 teams. I think it'd be a ton more exciting. Although a lot of history would be lost, and for most that's the end of the conversation.
  17. Just saw a segment on Pardon the Interruption talking about Gilbert selling the Cavs before Lebron leaves. Who's in the market for an NBA team, and would they be looking to move?
  18. Thought I'd start an all-encompassing thread for talk about the four major league sports expansion talks. For some reason this has been on my mind today. Currently there are 32 NFL teams, 31 NHL teams, and 30 MLB and NBA teams. I figure in the next five to ten years each league will be at 32 teams. How I think that would play out partially: NHL: Seattle gets a team, giving the NHL seven teams west of the Rockies (three in Canada). NBA: Seattle gets a team, but has to "steal" one from another western city as there are already seven teams west of the Rockies in the NBA. Most likely move: Sacramento. Baltimore or St Louis get a team. Nashville, Cincinnati or Columbus get a team. Markets of this size usually have two professional teams. Columbus is probably too saturated if you include OSU as a professional team. They are more popular and worth more than some NFL teams. They also pull very well in basketball when top 20. Along with the increasing popularity of the Blue Jackets (same season as NBA), I don't know how well an NBA team could build a following here. Although technically we have only one major four team. Nashville also has a popular NHL team, but lacks an OSU. However they're also home to the Titans of the NFL. Cincinnati already houses two professional teams as well, but lacks a winter team. They could be like Pittsburgh with three major four teams, but NBA instead of NHL being the third. They're also in a large college basketball market, with UC and Xavier and IU, UK and Louisville markets adjacent. Could NBA compete with that; could the two coexist? MLB: Nashville, Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham get a team. Texas gets a third team. Any of the four major cities, but probably Austin or San Antonio. The west is saturated as is with seven teams west of the Rockies. So Portland would have to steal another team. The south doesn't have enough teams. I don't see how any new MLB team would be located north of North Carolina/Tennessee.
  19. Any word on their thoughts on the Borror and LC projects? As for this tower, I think it is much improved. Hopefully they really do have tenants and financing lined up and can start ASAP!
  20. An update from CU: http://www.columbusunderground.com/borror-updates-state-street-development-project-seeks-approval-we1 Edit to add: This looks almost exactly like Edwards' High/Gay project.
  21. Two other sites I use for projects after commission/council approval: https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external/searchAction.jsp?action=showSearchArchivesForm https://ca.columbus.gov/ca/default.aspx
  22. Quality is low because it's from Instagram, but here you can see 711 N High rising and the streetscape work down below. In the distance is the Castle and the crane for the Luxe Bell project near the Gateway.

  24. Pizzuti does great work. Can't wait to see some renderings. Discovery District is really filling out. Downtown might have a population of 12,000 by 2020.
