  1. For comparison - here is the weekly flyer for their store in Columbus. Prices seem reasonable: http://www.luckysmarket.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/051315_columbus.pdf
  2. Does anyone have any insight over what happened with Macie Jepson and Channel 5? I started watching Good Morning Cleveland a few years ago, and I cannot believe how many changes they make to that show. I loved Macie! I hope she is picked up by another station here in Cleveland. I also noticed Trent McGill is gone from there too, and they have a new weather girl from Alaska or something - Janessa, I think.
  3. America’s Best Cities for Sweet Tooths http://www.travelandleisure.com/slideshows/americas-best-cities-sweets-desserts/9 No. 9 Cleveland The Rust Belt city gets to have it both ways, ranking in the top 10 for both old-style bakeries and cool bars. Playing to the city’s heartland mojo, vintage-inspired soda fountain Sweet Moses, in the Gordon Square Arts District, specializes in house-made root beer and pharmacy-style phosphates and egg creams.
  4. Two questions - 1) I thought they mentioned outdoor dining on the second floor but I do not see it. 2) Will the Starbucks presence here mean the location on Clifton will close I wonder?
  5. There is another huge vacant church on Detroit Ave between the drug mart and taco bell in lakewood. Right across from the library. It's for sale too. They should look into that.
  6. Well I said I wouldn't post again, but how could I not after this GREAT news :) Cleveland picks Brickhaus townhouse plan for Fifth Church site, setting stage for demolition http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/05/cleveland_picks_brickhaus_town.html#incart_m-rpt-2 "A well-known church on Cleveland's West Side will be dismantled and replaced by townhouses and a small park, if all the pieces fall into place for a block-wide redevelopment at the city's western edge."
  7. Apparently I am not allowed to have an opinion, which is what I thought this board was for. Thank you for telling me what is wrong with me after I shared my opinion. I most certainly do belong in Avon Lake - you are right. Additionally I am an elitist who should be commenting on cleveland.com instead. I will definitely rethink before I decide to comment again. For the record, I live in Lakewood on a quiet, residential street. I own my house. I picked the location because it was very quiet, yet within a few minutes I can walk up to Detroit where the action is. If I wanted to live next to a far-fetched rock climbing gym, I would have bought a house near one. Rest assured, this is the last you'll here from me.
  8. I'm speaking as a homeowner and from a resale perrspective. I don't think the rock climbing proposal is a viable long term solution. I wouldn't want to live on the same street as that just as I wouldn't want to live in a home on Clifton Blvd. It's a preference is all which is probably the same preference of those that live on Lake. They moved there because it was quiet and residential but close to commercial without being next to it. Just my opinion.
  9. Lake Avenue is not downtown. Nice comparison though...
  10. Agreed! The more you fight it, the more likely Giant Eagle will pull out and you will be left with what you currently see for years to come. It is a losing battle. Lake Ave is a residential street. I don't blame these residents at all for not wanting a rock-climbing gym there. Who wants to live next to one? Move on people.
  11. Millennia Companies to buy Garfield Building for apartments, plans downtown Cleveland HQ move http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/04/millennia_companies_to_buy_gar.html "A growing apartment business based in Cleveland's suburbs will establish a downtown foothold this year, starting with the purchase of the historic Garfield Building at Euclid Avenue and East Sixth Street. The Millennia Companies recently signed a purchase agreement on the Garfield Building, a largely empty office building set for conversion into housing. Built in the late 1800s by two of President James Garfield's sons, the longtime bank building could become 172 apartments above ground-floor restaurants or stores."

Cleveland Crime was up by more than 7 percent in Cleveland year over year during the first six months of 2013. Murder and aggravated assault were both down, but rape, under the FBI's broader definition, and robbery were both up.
  13. I didn't see the link posted yet but saw references to it - here it is: http://ink-live.com/emagazines/hemispheres-dossier/1562/february-2014/#1
  14. I have to chime in here... I used to live in Boston, moved back to CLE and visited SF for my first time this past Fall. I took public transit in from the airport to Mission St station and walked up to my friends place in the Castro. First impression getting off the train station and first time stepping foot in SF: Filthy, smelly and more homeless people than I can recall seeing in any major city. The smell was absolutely horrendous - worse than any train station I have ever been in, including the plaza at street level. As I explored the city in the days that followed, my impression of the city only got worse. Weed smoke everywhere, homeless people everywhere (including taking shits wherever they deem necessary). I was offered to hit a crack pipe near Dolores park. I just couldn't imagine paying all that money to live there and having those be my daily interactions. Overall, it just felt really dirty. It made me appreciate the ambassadors in CLE that clean our sidewalks and streets. It at least lets people know that while we may not be the biggest and the best, at least we will make it look nice and take pride in what we have.
  15. Here are a couple 3D renderings: http://photos.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/2013/11/hotelzip.html#incart_photo
  16. New "This is Downtown Cleveland" video:
  17. Heard this from someone who works at Crop - they will be opening a second location in Phase II of FEB. Also of note, they will be opening a pasta restaurant in Gordon Square.
  18. As someone who works at the Clinic and walks by this travesty of a building every day, and as someone who also is an architecture aficionado.... Good riddance. This building has been neglected for years and years. It is beyond an eyesore. Had the original owners maintained it, maybe then the Clinic could be blamed for not incorporating it into the design. However, it is not the Clinic's fault that it has fallen into disrepair. And how many empty churches must sit on Euclid? At one point with the population of the area they probably had parishes spilling out the door, but this is so clearly not the case in this area. They are doing things the right way - building a hotel that will be larger than just the lot of the current church. It will generate foot traffic and hopefully spur additional development on nearby parcels of land.
  19. Hi ChiOtter411 - I moved here from Boston three years ago, after having lived there for five years. I lived in Fenway for three years and the South End for two. When I moved back here, I lived in Tremont. It was enjoyable from a nightlife perspective, but was missing a lot of the walk-able amenities Boston provided me. Last April, I moved to Lakewood (bought a place). It was the best decision I made. Everything I need is in walking distance - shops, restaurants, bars, drugstores, grocery, etc... It truly is a neighborhood, and very safe. It is a mixture of young and old, racially diverse, wealthy and right out of college, gay and straight, singles, married with kids, married without kids... I should also mention that I work at the Clinic and my commute to work is around 20-30 minutes each day, depending on when I leave. I live close to Clifton Blvd., so I can hop right on there to the Shoreway and get off at E.55th. It is a very easy commute. Hope this helps!
  20. I have seen it - I live around the corner. My belief was they were trying to save more than the facade because prior to Sandy coming through, there was much more construction and structural elements to it besides just the facade. My reaction was that Sandy destroyed that so now they are only working with the facade.
  21. Why is the building flat on the south side? When I look at it today, I always assumed that back in the day there must have been a building flush against it which is why it was so flat and windowless. But this picture proves otherwise.
  22. I do find it interesting that Kimpton essentially "doubles down" when they enter a market. I suppose if they have a chance to do a higher end and less higher end it would cover their investment better. But, does not seem like the typical way that these type of investments would play out. I would have expected the Schofield Bldg. project to be completed and after a year or so they would evaluate putting a second property here. They've only been around since the early 80's. If it wasn't for the Klimpton brand, there would be no W Hotel brand. They reinvent the "Boutique" hotel experience. In the mid to late 90s, they expanded to the East Coast in DC with the Hotel Helix, and at that time, it was the Hotel to book in DC. It has an awesome lobby/bar scene and a restaurant. Starwood wanting to develop a new brand and sort of "copied" what the Klimpton brand was doing and voila, the W brand was born. However, with Starwoods marketing share they were able to 1-up the klimpton brands. In addition, they own the majority of restaurant in their properties. So the Cleveland property will most likely have a "destination" restaurant. I've eaten at several and I've never been dissatisfied. I love their espresso ketchup. Klimpton has a huge LGBT market, so they use that audience as their initial target audience to break new properties. Their properties are typically clustered together. In DC, 5 of their properties are around Dupont Circle. The only failure, their brand has had is the Palamor in ATL. They built a brand new hotel, that opened in late 2009 and closed earlier this year. I think this will help our stagnant, hotel scene and bring others to market. When Klimpton enters the market a Inter-Continental, Loews, Sofitel, Le Meridien & W Hotel are usually right behind. I dont see us getting an Inter-Continental downtown considering we have two in the UC "adjacent" area. Starwood has no Properties in Downtown Cleveland and they want to open two Westins - The bond Court and the rehab on Euclid. We have the dining and entertainment venues in place, we just need interesting properties to match. The Warehouse District desperately needs a hotel and a Le Meridien would be perfect there. Klimpton? Seriously? For someone who seems to know so much about them I figured you would at least get their name right. KIMPTON.

Lakewood and SS are about equidistant from CSU. Lakewood to the West, SS to the east. If I were making the choice between the two, I would definitely choose Lakewood. And the rapid is accessible from Lakewood as well as bus lines. If I were a female getting out of class at 10pm at CSU, then had to take the rapid back to SS and walk to my apartment, I would not feel safe. Just my opinion. Yes, several people were beaten and robbed during movies there. Those responsible were caught.

Shaker Square seems kind off of the beaten path for a CSU student. Maybe Case or John Carroll but not for CSU. I would look downtown, Lakewood, or even Tremont/Ohio City. Little Italy is also a good suggestion but also seems a little far. Shaker Square is touch and go, in my opinion, and does not seem to be improving. Wasnt there an incident recently at the movie theater as well?
  25. I ate there two weekends ago. Great chili - three different varieties. I had the chicken and my friend had the beef. Steady foot traffic in for takeout but we were the only ones their dining in on a Saturday afternoon. It was very rainy though. Excited for more places like this to pop up on Lorain. Great interior murals as well. However it did seem a little pricey for chili considering the size bowls they came in.
