Ctown, We all love skyscrapers, but you don't understand the economics nor the urban planning implications for Cleveland if a new one wer to be added to our skyline.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Oh god, no, not the West Quad site. That would be really bad for so many reasons (including a lot of planning work that has been going on lately).

National City to lay off 850 mortgage-related positions
Good news! PD just updated the story. None of the 850 layoffs are from Ohio. National City to lay off 850 more workers As part of a new round of layoffs, National City Corp. said Thursday it is eliminating about 850 more workers because of ongoing woes in the mortgage industry. None of the latest cuts within National City Mortgage are in Ohio, but rather are scattered across other states. Still, the announcement means that National City has now eliminated about 1,300 jobs, or 20 percent of the workers in its two main mortgage divisions. The Cleveland-based bank last month said it was cutting nearly 450 jobs in one mortgage division, National Home Equity, which handled second mortgages originated through brokers outside of National City. The number of jobs eliminated is actually more like 500, National City spokeswoman Kelly Wagner Amen said Thursday. The bank hadn't previously pinpointed a number. About 300 of the 450 jobs eliminated are local, in Brecksville. http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2007/09/national_city_to_lay_off_850_m.html

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
^I'm 100% with KJP on this one. I don't think its a matter of 3 20-story buildings veruss 6 10-story buildings. Its more a matter of a placement in downtown. Once you get into skyscraper mode, developers take advantage of the economy of scale that they have inside their building and build in a lot of retail and services. People never leave the building when this happens.

I like Gomez as well, but he seems to pick up on stories only after KJP and Crains has already written about them.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
This is how I see it: The current site makes sense for those that want the building to serve as a bridge to the lakefront. The Tower City site makes sense for actually attracting convention business to Cleveland.

Ohio colleges becoming more competitive?
Seanguy, you should read the article before posting about Columbus' effect on colleges. In Kenyon's case, the growth of Columbus has nothing to do with their increased selectivity. If anything, it would be a detriment. Kenyon is located in a very serene and hilly area that serves as great recruitment tool. Sprawl would only lessen that. Lastly, only 15% of Kenyon's students are from Ohio (45% come from the mid-atlantic states and new england). Its a much more popular school on the east coast than it is here in Ohio. Columbus' growth is not supplying the additional applicants.

Ohio colleges becoming more competitive?
Over the past decade, I've watched my alma mater become highly selective with admissions. This year, Kenyon College accepted only 29% of its applicants. I've heard that OSU has also become more selective. Is this a trend among Ohio colleges and universities?

Assuming a TC cc, I'd like the increased sales tax revenue to also go towards adapting the old cc for a sustainable and beneficial use. We really can't let the old cc become an after thought in this process.

Am I reading that correctly?--He has commitments for 80% of the retail space?? Or is it that he hopes to have 80% by early next year?
