Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
the design is nowhere near eye-candy. Litt has a point there. what?? bucking a trend??!? The trend has always been to select an architectural firm that does hospitals. UH is not bucking any trend. They are sadly following the worn-down path that has produced so many bland hospital buildings. Very true. People do need to realize that a hospital does have a mission outside of improving the urban fabric. Here's the thing that is so important to UH: If they are part of an exciting urban place, they will be better able to recruit national and international talent. The talent level of UH is what will keep it competitive. The talent level will maintain and increase the level of grants that the hospital seeks. The cancer hospital occupies a very important space on Euclid. If the design is a dud, it will hurt all of University Circle. If we have a bland and boring Euclid Ave, scientist and doctor recruits will have a less favorable impression of the area. If they don't like the area, then they won't move here. Level of care will go down because the talent won't be coming to Cleveland. Therefore, the outside design greatly affects the level of care that goes on inside the hospital.

Strip District proposed in flats???
I didn't know that you had asked me a question. But anyways, I wouldn't want this that close to my house.

Sustainable Neighborhoods, Sustainable Cities
I don't think so. Its southern-facing, therefore it should never be in the shade.

Strip District proposed in flats???
I see both sides here. I don't think its a good idea at all to put a few strip clubs next to burgeoning residential area. On the other hand, I don't think that the effects will be so severe. Isn't Stage 2 a pretty small place (looks like it from the outside). I don't see the city paying for a huge expansion for a strip club.

Cleveland: Grays Green
I hope that this is on the back burner. Stark ought to concentrate on the WHD at this point. Splintering our development momentum would only hurt Cleveland at this point.

w28th, Its not like Volpe did any real design work here. It looks like a simple concept plan with renovation and some infill. Considering that there is diverse ownership, its not certain that CA will even do any of the architectural work on this plan. If there is anything that i've learned from young architects, its that they hate everyone else's work.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
Do you mean the united bank building? I work in there and have not heard a word about it being sold. If it were under contract maybe that would be more hush ,hush, but I doubt it could sell (meaning the deal be closed) w/o me knowing. That place is full of gossip you could move some of those offices over to the soon to be vacated mental health hq on detroit/25th. Peabody, you could walk to work!

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Forgive them. They are still building their vocabulary. Maybe they'll soon learn such terms as "mixed-use" and "urban".

Thanks. I've also heard that downtown districts often have office workers and that neighborhoods sometimes feature single family homes. ;)

There is supposed to be a hotel that will be built on Chester somewhere around 93rd. The Finch Group (Park Lane Villa) is behind it.

No, I haven't heard that. That would be fantastic, though. It would have some great views of downtown.

Now just hold on one second. How come we haven't heard anything about this? Is this a "renovate building #1 in 2007, then building #2 in 2009" type of deal? Musky, did you mean $500k instead of $500 million? If not, then I want to see that building's interior.

So if you grow up in northern Kentucky, how do you feel towards Ohio and Cincy? Do you feel more a part of Cincy than KY?

considering move to Cleveland, concerns about public transit and foot traffic
You must have kept to the quieter residential streets. West 25th and Lorain had large amounts of foot traffic. Going down Lorain, there is not so much pedestrian activity. Saturdays in Ohio City are generally very fun. Did you miss out on the Market Square activities? Live bands, kiosks galore..

Congrats. What street is the house on?

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
i'd like a happy medium too, but it doesn't appear that Maron is going that direction. He needs a coffee shop, a bodega and a diner on that street. Is there even enough available space for that many additional uses?
