just some thoughts.. The reason why there are such limited choices right now is because Euclid is in the midst off a massive overhaul that will feature a new bus rapid transit line that will connect downtown, Cleveland Clinic and University Circle. So, you are about 1.5 years too early. In late 2008, mass transit on Euclid will be super convenient. Be careful who you ask for advice. Many suburbanites have ideas about the rapid that are just untrue. I used to take the Rapid from downtown to Little Italy on a nightly basis last year around 10pm and I never felt uncomfortable or saw anything strange. If I had to exit at E.79, I wouldn't feel too comfortable walking around that neighborhood. But that's totally different. And regarding walking around CC at night, people will always be overally cautious when making recommendations. The Clinic's police department is truly top notch. They keep the area safe. Many suburban commuters see black people waiting for the bus on Euclid and equate that with a lack of safety.

Neither the CircleLink nor the CC buses will help here. CC is not part of UC, therefore the CircleLink buses don't route past the Clinic. The CC buses are used to transport workers from satellite parking lots. Either the #6 bus or a bike is your best option. The 9x might be perfect, but I believe it has been re-routed during the Silverline construction.
  3. Detroit is a long street. Near 117th, you get some riff raff and you get the alternative chicks. On the other end of Detroit near Lakewood's bar scene, I assume you get a much more suburban crowd.
  4. Pope, aren't those townhomes on E.118th? Its a 5-unit project by a small developer. I believe that 2 of the units were purchased in advance of construction.

i can't imagine that you'd have problems after 5. Once it gets dark, I'd feel a bit more timid about the place. Still, Euclid has a large enough amount of traffic that the eyes on the street should keep things safe. I used to work in the area and the cops never said anything about Euclid. When you say after 5, do you mean 7:30 or 11:30? There's a big difference.
  6. Wolstein still hasn't hired an architect for the project. He may go with more than one.
  7. The only change that I can see is that Shaia's property is incorporated into the design and that the building to the north of the cinema has a few more stories added to it.
  8. Well, the article spurred me on to go get lunch at Cafe Ah-Roma today. Business was brisk.

I live in a rehabbed Victorian. It originally had 4 bedrooms. The rehabbers decided to make a megabathroom by combining one of the bedrooms with the existing bathroom space. Its nice, but I'd rather have the extra bedroom.

where is there room at Cedar Fairmount?
  11. Tremont won't feel so sleepy on weekend evenings. Re Ohio City: there are many homes that have rentals available. You should pick up a Free Times or Scene. They'll have a good list of available rentals. You should also just hit the pavement. You'll see rentals available --walk around on Bridge Ave, Jay, Carroll, W.30th etc. The area around the West Side Market and Great Lakes Brewery is the heart of Ohio City. There is another nice little collection of restaurants at Bridge Ave/Fulton Ave.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are so many 2-bedroom units going up in the urban areas of Cleveland (and Ohio) that it can be tough for a larger family to stay in the city.

I kind of get sick of this anti-Coventry argument. Sure, its not as hip and cool as it once was for the alternative crowd, but you can't argue that its not a happening place. Just because the places that one frequented as a kid are no longer present doesn't mean that there aren't new places that still bring in the crowds. Its not like the place has gone all Flint on us.
  14. well, if the Medical Mart and the convention center go there, Forest City has said that it will remove the Tower City Cinemas. I'd much rather have an active cinema that invites folks onto the street than have one that buries them in the mall. I think the FEB would be a great location for the film fest.
  15. Regarding the East-West bank cooperation, I'm really surprised that the writer didn't cite the coordinator of this effort. Buliding Cleveland by Design (who will soon be led by a UO participant) is responsible for this partnering. Great news about the east bank. I just got back from a 10-day vacation...have the ED proceedings come to a conclusion?

Avoid Cleveland Heights due to safety concerns?? I think that you received some poor advice. Like any city, there is some crime, but you'd be fine in CH.
  17. Funny, I just saw retired Rich watering his lawn this morning. He lives one block away from the Cleveland Clinic.

this is great that you guys are doing this. I'll be leaving for vacation tomorrow morning or else I'd join you.
  19. its comparable in units and office space, but i think that Stark has about 4x the amount of retail than the east bank does.

    ^so much for symmetry.
  21. Actually, I made a comment in the deleted post that I feel points out something interesting. I don't think that City officials would show up for a major announcement with Stark if that announcement only centers on his small firm's move to the titanic building.
  22. Good news can never be overstated. :)

Personally, I don't get it. Are both of those structures part of the mansion? Are we looking at the rear or the front?
  24. You're really missing out on something, Pope. There's some much there there in Westlake.
  25. I was talking with an economic development guru who says that the people's perceptions of where the jobs are is usually about 5 yrs behind reality. Atlanta was a great place for jobs in the 2001,2002, but now that's not so much the case. However, people will continue to move down there thinking that its a job mecca.
