  1. I liked the old jerseys, but I don't mind these ones. I'd like to see how it looks with the pants, helmet and a player.
  2. Well, I have seen two conflicting stories. Last week's Sun said that over 200 jobs would be lost. Today, the PD says: Beachwood spared for now in Bank of America job cuts Bank of America is cutting about 2,000 jobs across the country as it absorbs the business of MBNA, the banking company announced today. But none of the 2,500 Bank of America/MBNA workers in Beachwood or Akron will be affected. The company said it would save some money locally by consolidating operations now spread among four buildings in Beachwood, selling two buildings. Last year, Bank of America had said it would eventually cut 6,000 jobs as a result of its purchase of the credit-card giant whose success built the fortune of the Lerner family here. So, what's going on??
  3. I wonder if Mr. Mann wanted this story to go to print.
  4. "Meetings of the University Circle Architectural Review Board have been closed for decades, enabling area institutions such as Case and University Hospitals to consult privately with each other and with distinguished visiting architects. Most other community development corporations in Cleveland have design review committees that meet publicly." Litt needs to get his facts straight. University Circle Incorporated is not a CDC. It is a non-profit organization that was set up to serve its founders--the cultural, educational and healthcare institutions that make up the Circle. Additionally, it does not receive city money to fund its operations as CDCs do. Additionally, Litt doesn't understand the role of the architectural review board (ARB). Neighborhoods in Cleveland can set up design review boards if they want to via a legislative act. No one has done this in the UC area (but at this time, UCI is trying to get one started so that it can have greater leverage when it tries to persuade a member from building something ugly). UCI's ARB, as created by the UCI charter, has always been pretty toothless. I think Litt doesn't like it because he can't attend the meetings. The architects, flown in from around the country, tear the proposals apart. The institutions don't like the ARB because they know its not a pleasant process (even though Litt seems to suggest otherwise). In the end, it really doesn't mean anything as the institutions don't have to follow the ARB's suggestions. Only some take the critiques to heart (City Architercture changed their design for the new construction portion of the ParkLane Villas). On to citizen participation: I think its absolutely necessary to include as many residents in the area as possible in the planning phase. Creating a greater link to the neighborhood is essential for the Circle. That said, the mentioned block groups have had some really whacked out ideas for what they want the Circle to be. If some of their ideas were followed, then there would be no additional job growth permitted in the area, no new housing would be built, and MLK would become an elevated freeway from E.105 to the lake.

The Cavs beat the red hot Nets on the road without Z. Its hard not to be excited about this ballclub now. Go Cavs!
  6. It turns out that Stark wanted to demolish the existing apartment towers and rebuild from scratch. While this would be the optimal scenario, Case is not operating with an unlimited amount of cash. The cost of demolishing the towers and rebuilding is way beyond the realistic financial scope of this project. While things are still very conceptual, the most interesting portions of what Case wants are: -extend E.115 st from Euclid Ave through the Triangle, with a small traffic circle in the middle so that the street can bend to reconnect to itself at Mayfield. While this will be open to cars, it would serve more of a pedestrian purpose -a usuable plaza that would be surrounded by retail -condo towers (10 stories?) on both sides of Euclid Regarding the large surface lot on Mayfield next to the RTA tracks, UCI wants to develop that separately in the next few years. It could be developed in conjunction with CIA's expansion.

^its the last season for Shea?? I thought that they just announced that they are going to build a new stadium. I am confused..so they started construction long ago?
  9. While I am not absolutely certain, I was under the impression that Stark's proposal was less dense than the others. If he imagined stretching out onto adjacent land, that may have allowed him to build the same amount of sq ft. UCi owns land that abuts the Triange and wants to use it for its own mixed-use development purposes. If UCI was unwilling to part with that land at the moment, I think that would dampen Stark's desire to build at the Triangle. Considering that Ronayne wants to make UCI into more of a development player, i don't see the reluctancy to add these parcels to the Triangle package as a negative. Stay tuned.
  10. ^KJP, I think that you are correct. The other two projects are very similar, if not denser, than Stark's proposal.

Great game for the home opener! Tribe wins it, 11-6.
  12. Well, its not good that there are only two choices left for the Triangle. I would bet that there is a little more behind this, but it wouldn't be anything necessarily negative.
  13. Excuse me if this has already been mentioned.. Any word on when they would break ground for the Education building?
  14. ^Does Primo Vino own the lot that is across the street and backs up to the cemetery? That would be a great place for a few townhomes (if you knocked down that dumpy looking house on the corner and stretched the development onto Mayfield.) I find it very strange that the local CDC would not even attempt to contact the owner of the theater before suggesting that it become a parking deck. Little Italy is a small place and Dolce Vita is a big fish--you think that they would have at least talked to the guy about it before telling the public what he should do with his property. On the other hand, I have the feeling that the owner isn't really trying to think of any good ideas for the building. Wine bar? C'mon, one just opened up across the street. If you have a theater space, you have the perfect opportunity to do something unique. By the way, I noticed that the parking lot to the immediate east of the theater had a for-sale sign infront of it.
  15. University Hospitals Donates Cozad-Bates Property to University Circle Inc. Cleveland, OH – University Hospitals Health System (UHHS) today announced that it will donate the Cozad-Bates House to University Circle Incorporated (UCI) in order to preserve and celebrate its historical roots. Located on Mayfield Road near East 115th Street, the Cozad-Bates House was built in 1853 by Andrew Cozad. As the only surviving pre-Civil War era structure in University Circle, the home sits on a half acre of land that was once a farm owned by known abolitionists. UHHS acquired the property in 1985, and it has stood vacant during the past 20 years. UHHS’ expansive building project, announced in January, does not include plans for the Cozad-Bates House... more at: http://www.cleveland.com
  16. Boarded up windows, even if there is interior renovation going on, can kill a street. I am glad that E.4th is looking better for the start of baseball season and the beginning of the basketball playoffs.
  17. I would love to find out more about this. Mr. White spoke to our class last night. From his tone, he is very pro-tax abatement. If that was the issue, I would think that the city would have come through. MGD, we need to get Silliman's or Strnisha's take on that situation.
  18. While its a small parcel, in many ways it is the introduction to the west side that is given to shoreway commuters. It has set a bad tone for how one interprets the rest of the Clifton corridor. I am very glad to see that it will be improved.

Pope, I also agree that this one needs a new thread. Or, it should at least become part of a University Arts and Retail district thread. The UC thread is too large and contains too many different projects.

The thin vertical windows seem to be making an unfortunate comeback.

    WOW.
  22. I find this conversation interesting. I am moving in from Cleveland Heights and buying a house on Clinton Ave just past the Ohio City townhomes. While its not Stonebridge, the location is affected by the concentration of public housing nearby. Does anyone know anything about the mini-mart/deli on W.28th and Detroit? There are always 4 or more scruffy looking guys just hanging out on the sidewalk.
