Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
^I agree about the dorms, but Hanna is a 50s eyesore. There is another Hanna building on the premises that is beautiful. The beautiful one stays, the dumpy one goes. My wife might be working at UHHS next year. She said that Hanna is very poor inside and that the emergency room is embarrassing.

Cleveland Metroparks: The Emerald Necklace
Tinker's Gorge is the best. I was amazed when I saw it for the first time this past fall. I also agree about the Rocky River reservation. Very nice.

Cleveland: Lighthouse Landing
Geez, City Architecture does everything. This is a pretty significant structure. I would love to see some 10+ story buildings going up in the Flats. KJP, Your little bit of info definitely adds some legitimacy to this.

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
Cleveland-area forumers, I highly suggest that you pick up a print version of the West Side Sun News. KJP has an excellent excellent commentary about Stark's plan, Cleveland's negativity, and how to create keep our young, creative minds from leaving the area. Congrats, KJP. The commentary was dead on.

Cleveland: Lighthouse Landing
If they do build 300 housing units, I don't think that 400 spaces is too much. Most developments factor 1.5 spots per unit. I know that you guys are making a different point, though.

Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
I believe that its only a massing. The site for the cancer center has not been selected as of yet. UH already knows that this sort of design is not what is desired. We should know more in the next few months. Also, the hotel location is just a concept. But, there is definite interest in building a hotel/conference center somewhere in the immediate area.

I thought that the Ferchill project would either be the existing building that is exactly on W. 9th/Main Ave or on the lot that is between the two existing W. 9th buildings. It seems odd that this would be on their website. Usually, you hear about these things in the media before they show up on a website. Let's hope its for real.

Along with the construction... Besides the construction jobs, UH plans on adding about 1000 workers in the next 5 years to staff these buildings.

Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
X, You are correct. I was really sad when I found that out. However, it is just one of these 'yellow brick colonial' buildings. Lakeside Hospital, the grandest building on the campus, will not be touched. Hanna won't be touched either. Those are the same style as the nurse dorms (yet, much larger). Originally, UH was going to put the emergency room and entrance where the nurse dorm building is. Also, they were going to put a parking lot infront of it. A six foot cement wall would separate the surface parking lot and the Euclid sidewalk--you couldn't have dreamed it up any worse than that. Now, they are considering the nurse dorm building as a possible location for the hotel. If it were to go there, it would open up onto Euclid. Interesting thing about the nurse dorms: Most of the rooms are tiny. Supposedly, there is lot of jealousy about which departments get the bigger rooms. It has caused a lot of internal problems. If they could knock out walls and renovate, they would.

Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
Straphanger, 1. While it may seem like the Clinic has a lot of space, their expansion plans are ambitious. They will have a land shortage. 2. I don't mind that UH builds their garages next to the rapid tracks. It blocks the freight train noise (which come every 20 minutes) and it keeps them from fronting on major streets. Now onto the projects.. UHHS The new Cancer center will go in either of two places: at the corner of Euclid and Cornell (best option imho) or at Cornell and E.115 (this option would knock out 2 or 3 homes on E115). UH should also be announcing a new emergency room building and are looking into a hotel/conference center. The old nurse dorms (the pretty building that faces Euclid with all the window unit A/Cs stickinng out) will be torn down at some point. The support walls are many and the rooms are tiny--in other words, its functionally obsolete (and it makes for some horrible office dynamics). They were going to put the new emergency room at this location. This would have been horrible from an urban design standpoint. Luckily, they were convinced to put it elsewhere. Cozad House UH owns the property, but I am not sure if they own the house. Don't worry, this house won't be touched (unless things have radically changed). There is a group that is actively working to restore the home and turn it into some sort of Underground Railroad musuem.

coventry merchants regain street's cred via american apparel
There is a big difference between Marc's and Trader Joe's. Marc's would be a good fit for Coventry. It carries a lot of necessities that you normally would find at a grocery store. The only thing is that they always always have the dirtiest stores around.

Closing a portion of Euclid Ave: what do you think?
Dan, If the city sells the land, why not just load it up with a bunch of easements so that the city can go in later and do what it wants?

Closing a portion of Euclid Ave: what do you think?
^This is separate from the Chester front door idea. It is a concept at this time. X, I agree with your statements. This would take even more traffic off of Euclid. I don't think that Clinic sees things that way. They own most of the land between Euclid and Chester. There are some dumpy buildings that will someday be torn down for future expansion. I can see that it would be in the Clinic's interest to create a more campus-like area, but I don't think that its in MidTown's interest. Smackem, They wouldn't build on the street--the Silverline will still be running up and down it. It would become a park-like setting. Some landscape architect from CA is designing it.

Closing a portion of Euclid Ave: what do you think?
The Clinic is considering making a proposal to the city to close Euclid Ave between E.105th and E. 89 to all non-Silverline traffic. Because Euclid Ave will only be one lane each way in that stretch, the Clinic feels like it will be worthless as a traffic artery. They would landscape the the area to create a a campus-like setting. They have a donor who would pay for the work. What do you guys think?

Cleveland: Park Lane Villa
It was low income housing and the bank forclosed after the owner defaulted. UCI bought it and sold it to the Finch Group (the developer). The new building will be 4 stories with two condos on each floor. It'll be located between the Judson Manor and the renovated structure on Parklane. The new building will hide a two story parking deck that will be constructed on the existing surface lot. The entrance to the parking deck will be on E.105. The developer wants to put a restaurant on the first floor of the existing structure.

Cleveland - Entrepreneurship Preparatory School
Wow, that sounds great. E.105th? Maybe he said E. 107th?? I know that the renovated John Hay will reopen next year as a science magnet school. Maybe this could be inside the John Hay as well. Its a mammoth structure.

The Ground Floor Comedy Club is using the old theater space for B-movies. In other news.. Apparently, another bar is opening up in the old Loft space. Scorchers is the name. What a bad name for a bar. I hope that its tongue-in-cheek.

Ohio trivia: What do you know?
There are many interesting little facts about our cities. I am going to post a few questions about Cleveland that I find to have interesting answers. Here is one to start things off: How did the Gund family make a lot of its money? Any other interesting facts about other cities in Ohio??

Cleveland Barons Discussion
^But OSU's basketball court still has a large "V" on it and says Value City Arena. Its embarrassing to have that represent Ohio. What's next, Dollar General Field? I don't think that anyone is a fan of Quicken Loans Arena. Say what you want about the Gund, at least it stood out as one of the few non-corporate-sounding names out there.
