Ohio: GM, Ford, and Chrysler News & Info
This would be great. I am sick of thosing these plants to the south. Nashville opened a Nissan plant a few years ago. Now, the US headquarters is moving from California to a suburban Nashville location. It would be great if we could win one at least every once in a while.

Cleveland-area technology business
KJP, You really need to keep us up to date about your articles. Can't you register a new username (oh, say PJK) and mention when and where one of your articles has been printed? ;) I'm not going to subscribe to 5 different Sun newspapers, but I am considering a subscription to the West Side Sun News. Is that the best bet to find your articles?

The Westinghouse is a no-brainer. Great views, access to West 65th and Edgewater. Also, the lakefront blvd will improve the area greatly.

That hotel is one of the last things that I would try to redevelop in Cleveland. It is too separated from the rest of the city. It would have no catalytic effect. Put the youth hostel closer to the action in Cleveland. Put it near one of the rapid routes. Young out-of-towners will be more likely to take a train to a hostel than a bus to some out of the way hotel that sits next to a highway and far from any significant urban life. I would love to see a hostel on West 25th, just south of Lorain. Due to the economics of this use, its difficult to put it on prime real estate.

Clvlndr, Where have you been? The burned building is about 3 structures to the north of the West Side Market. I agree with your observations on the Duck island proposal. I know that the images are only preliminary massings, but it really fails as a design concept. It would form a long wind tunnell corridor. It is not very inviting and it looks like a superblock. While it is isolated from the rest of Ohio City, this could really succeed in sparking a new neighborhood if the project is less linear and incorporates smaller blocks within the development.

Two tidbits of info that I heard today: HUD has given an extension to the Riverview Hope VI project. The building that burned down on West 25th will be rebuilt preserving the original facade.

I wouldn't mind building at the public square site if the structure would be tall enough. However, it would be a government building. Due to terrorist concerns, all new federal facilities must have a 50ft setback. I wouldn't want that restriction placed on a new building on public square. That said, what would keep them from hiring a private developer who would build space and lease it to the government? Isn't that the idea with the Flats building? There are two big office decisions that we have yet to hear about. DFAS and Quicken Loans. Any word on when those decisions will be made?

Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
"BRT sucks. There's nothing "rapid" about it, and flexibility is actually a very negative aspect of transit lines. No one wants to have to guess where the line is going to take them." Not that I am in love with BRT, but are you afraid the bus will take a random left turn and head out to Amish country? They do travel on established and fixed routes.

In preparation for Thursday's meeting, here is something to think about: Public involvement vs. public relations There are a lot of public meetings to gather citizen input. How do you know if officials are really listening? If... ... only 25 minutes of a 2-hour meeting are devoted to public comment ... the drawings look perfect ... the public involvement process begins after key decisions have been made ... presenters have answers for everything, including why your idea won't work ... the presenter says "we'll get back to you," then doesn't ... you feel like you're at a pep rally ... a steering group's meetings are not open to the press ... a steering group is composed of like-minded individuals/interests ... almost everyone in the room looks pretty much the same ... you start feeling the presenter is really the expert and you're unqualified to speak ... you see the info for the first time at the meeting where decisions are requested ... you get notice of a meeting three days before the meeting ... final decisions are made before public meetings are held ... pivotal interim decisions are made before public meetings are held ... decision days are set for two days after the public meeting ... technical information is offered only in technical language or formats ... you can't get your hands on technical reports or back-up documents ... you can't find out the underlying assumptions ... meetings are scheduled during business hours in small or private rooms ... the only presentations are slide shows, overheads and power point ... there are no take-home handouts providing more detail ... there's no significant budget left for the consultants to make revisions ... the presenter assures you that there's plenty of room for "tweaking" ... you've just encountered Public Relations, not Public Involvement, and it's time to insist on the real thing. — Genevieve Ray

Chris Ronayne to be next University Circle President
He graduated with a business degree from Miami and received his urban planning degree at CSU. His wife is one the top execs at the botanical garden. He is very engaging and has a lot of positive energy. This position should be stepping stone for him (although career-wise, it is probably just a lateral move). It will enable him to create relationships with some of Cleveland's more powerful institutions at a very important time.

Cleveland: Downtown Storefront Displays
If the county had chosen Goldberg's site, he was going to tear it down and build a new building. As has been said before, its rumored that the foundation is too weak to survive any renovation. It would not pass code.

^It would be nice to get the Cleveland School of the Arts involved. Have kids paint neat stuff and make the owners look like great guys for partnering with inner city youth. Or, maybe CIA could offer some help.
