Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Gotribe, West 6th and St. Claire? There is only one lot at that corner. But, that lot is mamoth. How much of that lot would your guess entail?

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
I believe that it will have one entrance. While I am not a Starbucks fan, this will help draw people out of the megalopolis that is UHHS. The University Circle East building needs more foot traffic. BTW, UCI just won a little battle with RTA. RTA was going to take 3/4 of the sidewalk infront of Starbucks, Uptown Grill, Rascal House, etc for a turning lane on Euclid Ave for Mayfield Rd. Fortunately, the sidewalk will be left alone.

^The new Starbucks is going to be a Starbucks/Charter One. I believe that the bank will keep Starbucks' hours. Strange.

Courthouse tower is* near the Detroit-Superior bridge. This Ferchill thing is just north of the Main Ave. bridge.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I saw that the Elyria company that was to locate in the burned-out building on West 25th street will now take up space at the Idea Center in Playhouse Square.

Cleveland Housing "Boomlet"
I am glad that Rosentraub continues to write these articles. I agree with him. I think that the two biggest obstacles that we face as a city are: poor schools and high taxes. A regional approach could go a long way towards improving the city in those two areas. I hate to see Strongsville and Middleburgh Heights offering tax relieft to UPS. UPS has to have a cleveland-area location. If we had a regional approach, we would not have to offer these tax breaks. I know that many people complain that we don't have enough good jobs in the area. We lose out for a reason. While I am happy when new jobs are announced, we will not be able to sustain any growth until the schools are fixed and the tax structure is set up so that businesses don't want to flee the region. Geez, I am sounding awfully republican. Someone slap me.

DFAS Cleveland
While on the theme of Cleveland jobs, it has been announced that the VA will include an additional 300 jobs in its consolidation at the University Circle facility. Last year, they announced that 1000 jobs would be moving from Brecksville. Now, the number has jumped up to 1300. By 2008, they will spend $250 million to expand the present facility to accomodate the growth.

Cleveland historic trolleys - staying or going?
It is strange that this idea has not received more press.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I heard that Wolstein offered a vague comment after the meeting about the loading docks. Something like "they won't have to worry about that." Ideally, Samsel could move to a more industrial area of town where they would have better highway access for their shipments. Their building looks like an ideal place for loft conversions. That entire little area is ideal for loft conversions. Who wouldn't want to have a place that overlooks the river?

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
I agree with both of you. In the next three years, there should be a Barnes & Noble at the Corner of Euclid and Ford. That will be a start. Cleveland needs and deserves better book stores.

Strongsville may steal 380 UPS jobs from Middleburg Hts.
This is just one example how the lack of regional government kills us. Strongsville is offering all these tax incentives to steal those jobs. UPS has to put the site in the area. If we had a collective approach, we wouldn't have to offer any incentives at all.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
"If our only hope for cleaning the abandoned, polluted, industrial sites along the Red Line on the east side is to build a road through them, then we have truly failed our urban areas." I think its obvious that we have failed that area of the city.
-
Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Why would this hurt Redline ridership? The idea behind the project should lead to an increase in demand for transit to the area. The idea of the project is to open up land for industrial development. Many firms are leaving the area because they cannot expand or because they are poorly situated and don't have streets that their trucks can get through.

Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
Well, we may have to face the fact that our leader will be Jackson for the next four years. Still, a lot can happen in the next month. The PD's editorial on Campbell wasn't very flattering today. So, my first impression is that Jackson would not be a very good candidate. From his rhetoric, it feels as if he would focus on his ward and forget downtown. He boasts about understanding the drug dealers etc. That may win him some votes, but I don't think that will turn him into a good city leader. But, what do we need to focus on in order to make this a better city? My instinct is to say that we need improve downtown. That is where 70% of our income comes from. But, does the downtown go down if the poor areas of the city continue to decline? My thoughts are not very well organized at the moment. When Peter Lawson Jones threw his support behind Jackson, it made wonder if there is something to Jackson that I am not seeing. Or, is it just a political payback oh which Campbell is the victim?

Fire on West 25th?
Its an idea. I wouldn't mind parting ways with the buildings on the immdieate right and left of the burned out building. It would make for a nice sized apartment building with parking underneath (like the Fries & Schuele across the street).

I was referring to a large Canal Basin park.

^with all the (petroleum-based) fertilizers that go into farming, ethanol is not really that efficient.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
I really believe that the towpath could change the direction of downtown. I know that we will need a lot of money to bring it into downtown. After getting here, we need a grand space where people can gather. I would suggest that we throw an extra $40 million into the Convention Center referendum that we will eventually have to ask the voters to approve. I don't think that $40 m more would scare off voters. I am going to continue this topic under the "Dutch Experience" thread. It seems to be kind of what they were talking about.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
At this stage in the game, it is starting to seem like people are just throwing out locations in desperation. I would not be surprised if next week we hear about a site on stilts in Lake Erie. I would hope that this project stays in Ohio City. Something like this could change OC's status from Up and Coming to Established. I agree with MGD about the 'tailgating reference. I am glad that we are keeping in mind the highest and best use. I mean, 8 dates a year for tailgating should definetely take priority over housing. While I like the idea of connectivity, I would guess that it would be pretty expensive to raise the condo tower over the tracks. If it is cost efffective, then by all means go for it.

Fire on West 25th?
MGD, The firm that you are referring to is a tech firm that did computer stuff with schools. It is exactly that type of business that Cleveland needs to grow. I believe that it was moving in from Elyria.
