Cleveland: 2005 Mayoral Election
Mayday, Good comments. Cleveland88, Let's be realistic. You want to starve the school district of funds and expect it to improve? Improving the viability of an economy is more more complicated than imposing a black and white, low taxes will cure all view on things. Not sure why you focus on democrats. Cities are lead by great leaders, not by parties. Do you trust people who shift the focus from quality leadership to party politics? If so, I hope you aren't a voter in the city of Cleveland. By the way, did anyone see how Dan Moore was called out for not living in Cleveland by Fullwood? Fullwood claims that Moore soundn't have a say in Cleveland politics if he doesn't live there. Fullwood failed to point out that he himself lives in Shaker. That sure hasn't kept him from weighing in city issues. I wish that Moore were running. He seems to be an able mind with energetic ideas.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Some tech company is moving from East 25th into the Sincere Building (per Crains). I am curious as to which floor they will occupy. I kind of hope that it will be the first floor, but it could be the second. They are bringing 12 employees.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I like modern stuff too, but only if it is done well. In my opinion, it is not good design. (but, no one has ever paid me for my design abilities.)

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Right now, East 4th is quite bipolar. There are the flashy Pickwick & Frolic and House of Blues. Then there is all the boarded up storefronts. Additionally, we have all this stringed lighting and phoenix statutes. Its neat and embarrassing at the same time. Hey, does anyone like those light poles or the phoenix? I think that street would look a lot nicer without those elements. The phoenix is over the top and admits a little too much of the near past. The light poles are just plain ugly. I would prefer some more traditional 19th century stuff.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
its a stupid article. The headline makes you think that there is trouble. The content tells you that RTA has already remedied the situation. X, I agree. But maybe they are worried that the overruns will mean that the project won't go forward and they would be wasting their money on us.

The sketches on Channel 5 are funny. They look like 3rd grade artwork.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Is the one page streetscape and old cityblock plan the only things available at the moment? The picture looks great, but it took forever to download on my mac. Normally, if it takes that long, there is much more to the file. Is there more than just that first page?

Cleveland: Courthouse Plaza
This would be great. The timeline says that presale should have started last February. So, I would guess that they do not have enough investors.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
I know that this seems like no news at all. But, the land had not yet been purchased when we were hearing all about the plans for this development. Construction was held up until the land transaction went through. I just hope that BP has an entrance onto the new shoreway. As is, the new neighborhood is hidden from the rest of the world. Cleveland needs its new developments to stand out the commuting suburbanite. There is a decent amount of housing being built in the city. Yet, if you commute in from the highways, you are unlikely to notice any of it. Cleveland suffers from a bad rep because so many do not know of the positives that are going on. New construction provides that warm feeling that boosts civic pride. I hope that the new project has sufficient visibility. Any word on the Hope VI Riverview project?

Cleveland: Transit Ideas for the Future
What is in the future for Cleveland transit? Something cheap. It seems that there isnt the population growth nor the foresight to make large projects a reality. If anything could happen, I would say that a line going out from the Detroit Superior Bridge (as KJP points out) extending along the new shoreway boulevard and into Lakewood would be a great and cheaper idea. I know that Lakewood and Cleveland are looking at ideas for Clifton. I think one idea was to put a median in the middle. That street could handle double the traffic and is way too big for its present burden. We could turn Clifton into a Shaker Boulevard-like corridor. While that is not the densest part of lakewood, except near 117th, it is still dense enough to garner significant ridership. Is the RTA kicking any ideas around? It seems that before teh BRT, we heard ideas of redline expansion, WFLs and subways to UC. Is the leadership different and lacking of imagination? Does the leadership own stock in Ford SUVs? Or, are we at a point where transit in Cleveland is too expensive to build?

Cleveland: Chicle Building Completion and New Townhomes
Lakewood was some of the best services. They actually go into your backyard and pick up the trash for you. The schools are wonderful also.

Cleveland: Chicle Building Completion and New Townhomes
1000-15000 too small? It all depends on what you are used to. Congrats on getting out of the suburbs. What took you so long? ;)

Cleveland: Chicle Building Completion and New Townhomes
I believe that construction for the townhomes is slated to begin this fall. On another close by project..I am wondering if the Rockport project is expanding by one parcel. It looks like a parking lot and convenience store type building has shut its business. That land is now being used as a staging area. The building has a Rockport Square sign in the window. It would be great if that land is also going to be redeveloped. This will really change that side of Lakewood. If any area of Lakwood needed a boost, this is the area. Also, I like that it is close to Cleveland. Could provide some momentum for spin off development. (I am too lazy to find the Rockport topic.)

Random Ohio Sports Talk
Good to see that the Cavs picked up Hughes. Hopefully, we can get a point guard with a 3 point shot and a good center.

Why Cleveland lacks significant rowhouses
Mayday, I was joking. I like Jay a lot. Two of our brethen have just leased places on Jay. I was just teasing them. Cinnabun, I like those townhomes. I have run past them. They seem to be some of the first renovation/new construction projects in that immediate area. I like that the Chicle building is going forward down the street. Also, I like its location near W. 117th. Seems like that area is getting ready to undergo further improvements in the years to come. The Cudell cdc seems pretty active that way.

Did you know that Tim Horton's was owned by Columbus based Wendy's?
Boy did I swell with pride when I read this topic! ;)

How Do You Explain Ohio To People?
Here are some interesting things about Ohio that you would want to mention: 1. Where rock n roll was named and where white DJs made it acceptable to play black music (thus opening the door for rock to become popularized). 2. The state which has produced the most amount of presidents. 3. Home to one of the best symphony orchestras in the world 4. Home to one of the best art museums in the world 5. Hmm.. Locutus, good question. To a foreigner, there are not many things about Ohio that would stand out. But, that could be said about many states in the US.

Abandoned: The Terraces (formerly Domain on Lee in Cleveland Heights)
Is it going to be where the present Ohio Savings Bank is located? Is that bank going to have a temporary home during construction? Thanks for all the info!

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
I was poking around Case's site and found a reference to the architects that are planning the new dorms. Looks like they are in the final stages of planning out the rest of the new phases for the dorms. Specifically, I have heard that a consolidation of Greek houses is part of the next step. Here is some info from the architect's site: ASG completed the 128-acre Case Western campus master plan in 2002. The University then requested a site plan and further study of the North Residential Village as the location of the Greek community, with prototype buildings for 18, 24, and 36 students in duplex and stand-alone facilities. This strategy was one of several presented in the master plan to meet Case Western’s goal of creating the premier living/learning environment. After the initial Greek focus, the study expanded to include the phased addition of six residential colleges for freshmen and additional on-campus housing for sophomores, juniors, and seniors now on the south campus. That area would become the site for graduate housing. Student life services also will expand and improve, including a new dining and recreation facility to replace the existing dining halls. Study Completion: 2005

Why Cleveland lacks significant rowhouses
Jay Hotel: First off, I don't know what kind of lunatic would want to live on Jay Ave. (Oops, my apologies to the incoming MUPDD class.) :) Secondly, I wonder if the sales of the ugly metal warehouses on that Jay block have gone through yet. That has been holding up this development for the past 2 years. From the picture, I can see the Jay hotel. It looks like the property that fronts W.25th will also be raised. It presently houses some sort of carpentry business and doesn't fit into the emerging character of the neighborhood. Thirdly, what does "waiting list only" mean? I assume it means that the project is not officially ready to start. Considering that its summer already, something is holding it up.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Look, all I am saying is that we need to look more closely at the project. Just because it may look bad at first glance doesnt mean that we should dismiss it. And, I really don't think that it competes with the ECP. They are different types of transit projects. One is meant for more TOD development and the other is meant for industrial and access purposes. University Circle is a growing area that needs increased options for all types of commuters. I think that we too easily fall for the romanticized idea that we can make Cleveland a better place by shutting down all roads and forcing the entire population onto the Red Line. We would do our city a disservice if we did not take an intelligent look at all the options. Clvndr, Chicago has built quite a lot of transit in the middle of its freeways. And, that area could hold potential to draw increased industry. Cleveland is hindered by its lack of available quality industrial properties. Many businesses have left town unwillingly because they could not find adequate space within the city limits. Access to road transportation is very important for industry. The Access blvd could provide the greatest opportunity to retain and draw increased industrial activity to the city. Furthermore, its location on the redline is perfect for the lower-income workers that such work draws. I am not the Access blvd spokeman. I feel more like I have to play devil's advocate because some, like myself, have fallen quite hard for a beautiful and intelligent new innerbelt bridge that would be great for downtown. Other random points: -University Circle is very interested in the access boulevard. -While I don't place much faith in Campbell or Jackson, I also don't summarily dismiss what they say without taking a closer look -I agree that Cleveland traffic is just fine. But, I do think that UC would see a boost in attendance from improved access. Growing up a westsider, UC is not very accessible. That lack of accessibility is a drawback. However, I wouldn't do the project for that reason.

X, that's what it sounds like to me. I am curious to see the designs. All glass?

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I think its about an even split between rental and condo.
