Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Sometimes we have a very skewed version of property rights. If one man's right to property hurts a city's ability to provide for its citizens, then we have a system that fails. This summer's supreme court case will be very interesting. That one seems abusive, while Cleveland's case would pale in comparision.

Ohio: Third Frontier News & Info
Well, in regards to Cleveland.. Most of the funding goes to tech transfer. The technology is already present. Scientists at the Cleveland Clinic and Case have come up with the tech. It is to the advantage of the entrepeneur to be near the scientists (constant questions, etc). That is why two companies are moving from MN to Cleveland. Usually, there is a contract in place that makes the funding contingent upon the company staying in town. If that contract is broken, there are liquidated damages that would also serve as as deterrent to leaving. The problem with the VCs are that they are usually in the big cities. They like to invest in companies that are close to them so that they can keep an eye on their investment. Also, other VCs like to help their hometowns and will require the company to move to, say, Boston, in order to get the funding. That is why the Third Frontier cash is such a help. Unfortunately, there is not a great amount of Ohio VCs. The Clinic got so much money because of the greatest potential to great jobs and draw in out of state customers.

Locutus, Your general 'anti-government at all costs' propaganda is way too polar. You just can't make statements like those above without providing any sort of proof. You lose any credibility that you may have had. "The whole thing is rife with corruption." How so? Please explain how it is "about whose got the best political skills." Or, "whose got the best lawyer." Please explain the role that lawyers have in this process. Where is the corruption? I know that you dislike this because it is funded through tax dollars. But, do you really know so much about the process so that you could call it "rife with corruption." C'mon. Add something to this board. You form your opinions before even looking at the facts of the situation. Show some wisdom and take a second to think about the differing factors that affect a situation. Until you do so, you only give us a reason to believe the opposite of what you propound.

Regarding the facades, I like the building where the Harvard brewhouse once was. But, I think that we need to put things in perspective. I don't love that they will tear down some old buildings, but I view it as a necessary evil From what I've heard, the streets will be reconfigured. The locations of the existing structures are not situated in accord with the plans. This project needs to be done right. It can really boost the warehouse district and it can spur development of the port land to the north. If the right retailers can be enticed, such as a bookstore, I think that demand will really rise for the housing units. I am very excited to see this. However, it looks like everything is far from done. All the land is yet to be amassed. That can be a very elongated process.

Also, the developers mention that they have a condo project in Little Italy at 119th and Mayfield. Is this already built? Does anyone know something about that project?

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Midtown is such a large area. It will take many many years for the entire area to come back. I hope that focus is placed on Euclid avenue properties. With the BRT project, hopefully developement will start on Euclid are spread radially.

Cleveland also put a lot of effort into trying to keep the jobs. It may have been that the Columbus office had what the govt wanted regardless of any lobbbying effort.

If Zaremba breaks ground on its 400 units this year in the Erieview urban renewal area, this would be a nice kickstart to creating an attractive area northwest of CSU. If CSU builds housing or gets a developer to do so, the area around the PD will be a pretty interest place---CSU and student residences to the immediate south, market rate ritzy stuff to the west, and art lofts across the street. We shall see.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
From what I've heard, this is not necessarily an election year project. Someone said before that some bonds were due on the property in November. If Clelveland didn't sell before then, we would be stuck with some large payments. But, you could look at it a different way...they could have done the project last year. Somehow, I don't think that the timing is so politically motivated. They could have waited till prime election season to announce the project. Anyways, hope more news is forthcoming.

Cleveland: CWRU West Quad Project
Projects such as these are nice to dream about. But, they won't really make a difference for another decade or so. 2005 is the year of big projects for Cleveland: County building decision, covention center decision, securing a developer for CWRU, CMA project decision, Flats project, Zaremba project.

Where did you find that information?

I was going to ask that question. They are in the federal building, so who else would be responsible for the price?!

Another kick in the teeth. At least Columbus got something.

Ferrari, I agree with you about the units. But, maybe it makes sense with the development as planned. I would hope for more, but 150 condos is a very healthy amount.

I think that the waterfront line dissects the project. Doesn't Wolstein own the land between main avenue and west 10th. I know that long ago they had plans to turn that mega-lot into a parking garage. I really like that there will be public boardwalk. I would hope that it could someday stretch down to settlers landing. If done well, that would certainly improve public access to the waterfront. I am excited to see the plans.

CLEVELAND - Pinnacle update!
X, You are totally right. The strange curved top, the exterior steel beems. Combine that with the parking garage that was odd-looking to begin with.. Not to mention that it is amongst all the 100 yr old brick buildings. Strange project.

Yep. It is the full article. I am hoping that they tell Crains before Monday so that the story will be in next week's edition. They always post the new edition at midnight Sunday night.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Well, finally we are going to hear about this proposed project. This should give us something positive to talk about.. :yap:  Flats project to be unveiled By BRANDON GLENN Plans are set to be unveiled Monday, May 16, for a new $200 million real estate project on the East Bank of Cleveland’s Flats. A statement released this afternoon from public relations company Lesic & Camper Communications LLC announced Monday’s news conference, but provided few details. Constantino's Market Opens in the Bingham Building - Cleveland
There still is a Wild Oats near 271 and Chagrin, right? I like Whole Foods. Mayday's assessment is correct. I wish that the Bin could expand its presence in Cleveland. It is a nice organic market that employs handicapped workers. It was been around since at least the early 80s in Lakewood.

I find it interesting that they said the residential component would be large. I wonder if they have changed their focus since we last heard about these plans. It seemed that the commercial aspect was more important then.

Speaking of American Splendor.. My sister lives next door to Harvey Pekar in Cleveland Heights. She says that they are just like the movie. And, he doesn't keep up his yard very well.
