  1. it will be, this is just the first segment. I think it's supposed to go all the way to 34th st. eventually. When built out, it will only be 1.45 miles. I had envisioned a much longer path.

In what part of Chicago do you currently live?
  3. Absolutely beautiful. Looks like the budget was incredible. I was under the impression that the high line was going to be much longer though.

I think that you are agreeing on different things that end up with the same result. Hts44121 presents the legal argument and you are presenting the non-legal argument. They are two very very different things.
  5. I wonder if they've got someone lined up for the convenience store or if they're still trying to lease it out.
  6. Key--I chose it because it was local when I moved back to Ohio four years ago.

I'm a sick of hearing the poor argument that this about the constitutional right of where one can live. The SC ruling has nothing to do about that--its all about whether the state legislature can pass regulations that trump city regulations in a home rule state. Even if it were about a constitutional right, it is not as if the restriction was imposed after they took their job. Additionally, I don't see where in the constitution that this is a protected right. Grendell is misusing terms and making this into an issue that it is not.
  8. More often than not, this is true. But, it depends on what type of property you would look to purchase. The new construction condos probably haven't fared too well. There is a lot of supply and the market is bad. The older well-preserved homes, however, have fared quite well in Ohio City and Tremont. There have a been a lot of cases where homes have gone up in value over the past 3-4 years. I know from personal experience.

The rendering is about 5-6 years old. There is no new rendering at this point.
  10. I'd be more worried if the advertised pay were $60k. This "half-decent" idea is actually a great idea and I wouldn't want the salary to attract a field of under-inspiring candidates.

Have you heard about Ohio City and/or Tremont? Depending on what you are looking for, they could be great alternatives to downtown.
  12. That is going to be some sort of arab/lebanese (not sure which) grocery and restaurant/cafe. It was announced a couple of years ago.

Does anyone know if there is a forum similar to UrbanOhio for Pittsburgh?

It will be interesting to see how this all cycles out over the next few decades. At some point, some of these southern cities will start to feel the effects their growth in ways beyond traffic congestion. Nashville had a good county-wide school system that was a attractive to transplants. Now people are moving out of the county to escape the worsening public schools. There are no "cheap" catholic school options there like we have in Ohio. All the private schools are very very expensive. It will also be interesting to watch how sprawl effects their long-term infrastructure costs. In a few decades, there will be a lot of infrastructure that will have to be replaced at a high per-capita ratio. I'm not saying that the south is screwed, but it will be interesting to see how those regions are affected by the issues that currently face a lot of midwestern cities.
  15. I heard that Mayor Jackson put in a new roll of paper towels in his kitchen after the old roll ran out. Is that the kind of leadership we want? How can he waste his time on paper towels when we have murders and high unemployment in this city?? Get him out of the mayor's office and fast!
  16. 1870 with an 1890 addition.

Atlanta reminds me of what one of the greatest economic development minds of our day once said.. The places where the corporate headquarters locate will end up becoming the next failure. Corporate HQs attract large quantities of middle management workers who strive to keep their jobs and avoid innovation. Innovation is the key to new investment and job growth. It is all cyclical. This is not good for Ohio now, but Georgia should not get so cocky. They'll be the first to fall hard in late 2010s.
  18. I spent a week at Kelley's Island two years ago. The state park has a beautiful beach (truly beautiful). The state park is pretty isolated from the main "downtown-ish" part of the island. There are many camping sites in the park, but there are no cabins. There are many many private houses to rent, but they tend to be closer to the south shore (beach is on the north shore). The houses/cabins vary greatly. Here is a list: http://www.kelleysislandchamber.com/lodging/lodging.htm Feel free to PM me about this. I did a lot of research on this before I committed my in-laws' money to a week-long lakefront century home. Depending on what you need, you could end up with something great or something too isolated. No website will give you a perfect feeling for how the various rentals stack up against each other. General truth: you'll get what you pay for. I had shied away from Put In Bay because of the party reputation, but I later found out that the island is large enough and diverse enough to find whatever you're looking for.
  19. I've only been there once, but the dogs were pretty docile. As compared to the Lakewood dog park, this was much much tamer. I've heard some weird stories about Lakewood's dog park. One of the things that (supposedly) makes Tremont's dog park so nice is that it is maintained by a dedicated group of residents. For example, a resident is in charge of opening up and locking up each day. Tremont's level of community support is one of the reasons why it is such a strong community.
  20. I LOVE DOGS! :-) I have a pug named Stanley who's going to be 3 this year. I've seen a lot of other people in Tremont walking dogs and I've always thought that's a good sign. I took my daughter today to the Tremont dog park. She's 15 months old, but she loves looking at the dogs. The dog park is a very nice community asset.
  21. I've never heard this "barking" complaint mentioned by anyone I've known who lives or has lived in Tremont. Did you live in Tremont?
  22. KJP, I respectfully disagree. I run along this route very frequently. This is exactly how downtown looks from the upper portion of Edgewater.
  23. You've lost a lot of Cleveland cred with that guess. :)

I with you on Lord of the Rings. That stuff is weird.
  25. The positioning and the style of the mantle seems to put your house somewhere between an Ohio City victorian and the 1910-era Lakewood style.
