Considering that the footprint of downtown is expanding, I would hope that RTA is looking at extending the trolley service down into the Flats once some office tenants move in. Seems like it would be the logical thing to do.

For us Ohio City and Tremont residents, it has become a very convenient destination. Because I work on my house a lot, I frequent Home Depot. I also rely on Target for a lot of things that I used to go to the suburbs for. I don't shop at the Walmart.

Are there any requirements for state and federal dollars in play here? I know that with some programs, the applicant has to provide at least four alternatives when applying for dollars. I really can't see how the Stark land or the port land make any sense at all. I'm hoping that they are just filling some requirement. God, please!

Here is another way to look at it: Cimperman helped make a $500 million dollar mixed-used, TOD development happen by striking a deal to move a strip club from the middle of the future home of 1 million sq ft of corporate office space, 600 units of housing, a public park and tons of entertainment establishments over a bridge, under a bridge, and around the corner from another successful housing development that is not as important to the city's future.

^^Ohio City's momentum was not very strong in the late 80s. Sure, Jay Ave looked good. But it didn't stretch too far from that little enclave. The home mentioned in the article is pretty far from the heart of OCNW. In fact, I'm surprised that the area is not considered DS. It is not the best part of OC. I've been in this particular house. I consider it pretty tacky. Outside of the living room, it is pretty odd and somewhat cheapily done. The tv room looks great for 1987 and there is a lot of plastic in the kitchen. The bedroom has a jungle safari theme The guy who does "Buck Naked Yoga" is one of the owners. You ought to see the custom stained glass pieces in the master bath. If you see it, you wouldn't be surprised that the guy does the yoga classes.

Let me get this straight. You're saying that their steaks, hamburgers and grilled chicken aren't really grilled , but microwaved? Oh, and StrapHanger? There are a few 'casual dining' outlets within Lakewood and West Cleveland, but not much. Certainly there are places I can take my family where entrees are generally in the $10-15 range, but more choices are always welcome. Lots of pizza places, there's Aladdin's, some places like My Friends and the Indian restaurant. Can't think of much else. As much as some will turn their noses up at the place, I predict it will be very busy and draw a lot from Lakewood and Cleveland. I'm very curious what the design will be as well. The Rockport Square site plan calls for a restaurant to be built adjacent to (and including?) the existing building on the corner of Fry and Detroit. That building is on the market for 300K. On another board, a poster mentioned that Applebee's has a smaller-footprint urban model for walking neighborhoods that they could apply to this project. I can't wait to see some amended site plans to see how this affects the outlook for that site. A second six-story condo tower doesn't make much sense on that site in the current market, when they can't even get enough presales to start the first one. Perhaps they will abandon that lot to retail? I'm not really sure they can do that and still get their TIF money. I'm highly doubtful that Applebee's was FCE's first choice for that spot, as it doesn't really complement the project. They may have just been in a position to say 'yes' to the first stable income-producer that offered. The Lakewood Planning Department will probably let them get away with something similar to the IHOP on Detroit--restaurant up to the sidewalk, but with parking to the east or west that also comes up to the sidewalk.

Exactly! There will be some greenery added to E.4th by late spring. Nothing can be placed on the outside of the railings per the hardlining fire department. Shrubs, etc could be placed on the inside, but that would take away seating capacity from the individual restaurants.

The art is fantastic. The buildings themselves are generic. The art should be separated from the buildings. While I wouldn't advocate for it, the art could be separated from the structure, sold to an intelligent bidder, and the proceeds would easily pay for a new elephant house.

You are correct. It does stink. It houses the elephants and the hipos during the winter months. It is the equivelant of a barn.
