  1. A 100th birthday present for the WSM! Cleveland, West Side Market tapped to host International Public Markets Conference in 2012 By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer Published: Monday, March 21, 2011, 5:04 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland has edged out competitors -- including London and Toronto -- to host an international conference focused on public markets in 2012. The Project for Public Spaces, a nonprofit group based in New York, will announce today that it has tapped Cleveland as the host city for several days of discussions, events and tours http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/03/cleveland_west_side_market_to.html
  2. While it may be likely that bad news comes out of the Warehouse District this summer, the Friday and Saturday nighttime trouble sections will be highly, highly patroled (I'm told). Evidence here as the north side of W. 6th gets shut off to all vehicular traffic in both directions this weekend. To all the douche bags out there and their coddlers, if the party's not over...every attempt will be made to severely diminish it.
  3. Yeah it'd be nice to have those lines buried. Across the street from 806 Wine Bar, the former Grumpy's Cafe building is turning out well. It caught fire several years ago and is undergoing renovation.
  4. The only date I see on this pdf is a scanned PD article (June 27, 2010) but I read through it fast. Perhaps an answer to the lighting situation in Tremont? Anyone know about this? 10,000 Tremont LED Lighting Project "NEO residents said that they would enjoy visiting Cleveland more often if there was better lighting within the Cleveland neighborhoods. They felt that improved lighting would reduce crime, enhance historical beauty, and increase the patron base of the neighborhoods... ...The 10,000 Lighting Team formed and chose the Tremont neighborhood as the "Test Pilot" location for this project". http://www.tremontwest.org/index/cms-filesystem-action?file=10,000.pdf
  5. Very cool! The distinctive Robert Pence style.
  6. True. For this area, without a doubt. It stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb. Very glad it's gone. However, if this would've been somewhere like W. 25th St as part of a streetwall, in the Market District area especially, it would have been cool to leave the "Eagle" signage up...and renovate it as some sort of brewery or sectioned off into a couple restaurants or markets. The mid-century design built right up to the sidewalk would've had a ton of possibilities. [/img]
  7. Ok, fixed. (Your name was there yesterday)
  8. There's no way of knowing for certain at this point, but as I said earlier today I get the feeling that the Stanley is staying. I'm totally with ya on this one. The P. Johnson Play House has never endeared itself to me. And that huge setback is the worst.
  9. Puh-leeze. It's a historical Cleveland landmark and the last survivor from 1870s Cleveland in that part of downtown. You need to look through the grime and neglect. It should be a beauty when restored (a less ornate Hoyt Block but a beauty nonetheless).
  10. I never thought I'd see this, but the Eagle (Market) has finally landed. Is the Cleve Play House next?
  11. Clevleand Play House concentrates on the new era downtown. Cleveland Play House gets edgy in 2011-12 season, the first at PlayhouseSquare By Tony Brown, The Plain Dealer Updated: Thursday, March 10, 2011, 2:21 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Bloom has left the building. In spirit, anyway. And also in artistic direction, if you go by the audacity of the Cleveland Play House's 2011-12 season, which will be announced officially today." http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2011/03/cleveland_play_house_tweaks_ar.html
  12. I;m dreading this spring/summer/fall season. I just don't have a good feeling, especially for the hot summer nights. :| The Police Dept has installed a camera at the W. 6th and W. St. Clair intersection. It's like one of those that are on the quadrants of Public Square with the flashing blue lights. That is definitely a good thing. In my opinion, they're needed at a few more areas. Concerning the above post...I guess there was more commotion than usual on Fri night now that I think about it. But at the time I just thought it was part of the prelude to the party season (spring fever and St. Patrick's day usually ramp up the party mood). It's hard to know if anything seriously bad is going on now or if it's just people milling around. There are so many sketchy, shady types...again, definitely on the weekend summer nights 'til the wee hours...that some (many?) residents just know to be home by 10:30 - 11:00 PM on a Fri or Sat night or make accomodations to stay where you are 'til the next morning. I'm included in that because, well, I'm just too old for the B.S. On summer nights the predator : prey ratio spikes very high from about 11 PM - 4 AM (at least that has been the trend for late summer '09 and all of summer '10). And a seemingly large portion of the people in that timeframe like to f#@k with you if, in any way, you come off as vulnerable. If your dog needs a walk, I say to you "Bonne Chance", and it better be a big one because you're gonna be called every name in the book if it's a tiny little lap dog. Simple Biology 101/predator-prey. Purposely standing in front of parking lot entrances/exits, purposely walking slowly or just standing in the middle of the street...all the while watching for your reaction. It's just a fact of life in present-day WHD. And I'm a lifelong Clevelander who has lived in the city proper and downtown for years, so I'm pretty sure I know how to conduct myself in whatever environment I may be. The police need to be able to do their job though and the drama that occurred last summer cannot go on unabated. Disinvestment will occur and then on and on. There are other places in Cleveland that are walkable, convenient, urban, lively, with nightlife and daylife that are less drama-filled. I'm looking to uproot to University Circle. The Warehouse District is (still) terrific during most of the week and at most times of the year. It can be very picturesque (as evidenced by my recent photo thread) and is a very convenient place to live. But it is definitely experiencing some growing pains. Actually, that it didn't need to experience. It could've been experiencing the growing pains of infill and needs for more grocers or more clothing stores or what have you. But it has remained on the trajectory of filling the vacancies with a lot of clubs/bars. But I understand that is related to more complicated reasons, like the global and local economy. It remains to be seen what effect the CC/MM or Casino will have on this part of downtown. I suspect the Casino will have less to do with it...those visitors will either stay confined to Tower City or possibly venture out to the greater Gateway area. The CC/MM visitors will proabably patronize this District since it will only be right down St. Clair. But it has to be perceived as an enjoyable place to go. Anyway that's a few years away. Time will tell. That may just start this summer, who knows?, and all of these worries could be a thing of the past.
  13. Thanks for the link, those recollections were very interesting to read. It must've been 1953. If my bearings are correct though on the photograph (w/ arrow), I'm still wondering about the FCS & T Bldg. Oh well, it's a shame they were altered...by nature or by man.
  14. @Ohio City Correct me if I'm wrong... but where I have the red arrow, the cupola of the Forest City Savings and Trust is already gone. Also, Here is a list of tornadoes in Ohio in 1954 Source: National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2009/05/details_of_ohios_868_tornadoes.html?appSession=236206883504352 Date F Scale Counties 10/11/1954 1 Franklin 9/30/1954 2 Carroll 8/30/1954 1 Erie 8/12/1954 0 Erie 6/26/1954 1 Muskingum 6/26/1954 0 Franklin 5/2/1954 1 Hamilton 5/2/1954 0 Fulton 5/2/1954 0 Henry 5/2/1954 0 Fulton 5/2/1954 -9 Putnam 4/27/1954 2 Jefferson 3/19/1954 1 Ross Hocking
  15. ^This W. 25th redevelopment could be the jump-start that the north part of 25th needs. SORELY NEEDS! @Ohio City, thanks for the info. I'd like to look into your claims.
  16. ^That proposal is just so cheezy. It'll remove the height of the 10(?) story Columbia Bldg and turn most of the block (the Stanley notwithstanding) into a small-block version of a turnpike service plaza. Maybe they'll have a Burger King?
  17. UO...ahead of the curve! Also, the Columbia Bldg and the Stanley Block are incredibly close together. Didnt quite realize that until i revisited this thread. And this pic I took last May. The bottom half of the fire escape is now removed and the windows have been reinforced with plywood. I get the feeling the Stanley Block is staying. I hope I'm right. Now, however, the Columbia is sending out an S.O.S.
  18. Thanks all. A look out the window this morning and I knew had to get the camera out of storage...the scenes were just too purdy to pass up.
  19. A before-lunch walk around the neighborhood.
  20. Wow, this is terrific. That is the original smokestack on the Baehr Brewery, on the left there. I'm dumbfounded by the way the top half of the Odd fellows Hall was removed...incredible. That stuff was seen as old and stodgy to the new-fangled car generation. Things were to be sleek and boxy. This appears to have happened a few times in Cleveland in the middle part of last century. The Forest City Savings and Trust (now Massimo diMilano Bldg just down the street from this proposed project)... it had a decorative turret that stood as a gateway to Ohio City, the Schofield Building which obviously removed its rooftop ornamentation and wrapped itself in 1960s "aluminum", and evidently this Hall cut off its beautiful top. What were they thinking?
  21. Smack dab in the middle of PHS would be Star restaurant http://www.staratplayhousesquare.com/ Also, Acappella.
  22. ^Nice to see this finally finished. Looks great. Btw, yes it's true that Lelolai will be missed and was a unique asset for that area of W. 25th, but the Market District of OC can surely attract a similar establishment. I like the idea that some of the brick street (I think?) that is Gould Court ...and runs along the side of this building...will be a patio that should be hopping a large portion of the day and night, especially in good weather months. That just wasn't the case with the bakery. That's partly why the building next door was demolished years ago. To create an extension to the outdoors for whatever establishment was in that space. **EDIT: It could be that Lelolai will only move to a different area of OC. Who knows?
  23. Yes, very true. Essentially all of Cleveland's 10% Hispanic population is Puerto Rican, which is quite a stat. I'm surprised at Cincy's stat here.
  24. A great first step. C'mon Cimperman...get with the program.
  25. It looks like the public will be asked for some input "in late spring or early summer", accdg to the article in Inside Tremont. As good a time as any to bring up the lighting issue.
