Cleveland: Demolition Watch
The bitter irony. The Eton and Rugby buildings are gone, kaput... While across the street this lives on... A demolition permit has been requested for this... While just across the street, no such luck...

Exurban Cleveland - a drive through winery and nursery country
No, it's not. The abandoned house and the Spring Hill Winery are both away from the town center of Geneva but not near each other. The house is close to the side of a busy main thoroughfare, easy to see. No, it's all pretty much rural... You grew up there so you know more than me, but I would say that Perry, briefly shown in the few pictures at the end of the thread and the westernmost municipality on this tour, is almost certainly suburban (certainly exurban). The area now has many housing developments and the small historic "town center" and the surrounding homes are now the exception, not the rule. Madison, which is the next town east, has a good number of ex-Euclid residents (Euclidians?) and an emerging suburban feel. Madison is the "east side" location for Berea's Cornerstone Brewery (patio is pictured in the thread). And I know several people who work at UH and CCF that commute from these 2 places -- Perry, Madison. Harpersfield, Geneva are definitely rural. Given how sprawl works in this state, it's possible that in a couple decades these areas may look very different and have increased populations.

Exurban Cleveland - a drive through winery and nursery country
A Sunday drive through winery and nursery country out east in Lake/Ashtabula counties, after leaving Geneva-on-the-Lake, passing through 4 different town centers. A lot of this follows State Rt. 84 (part of the old Cleveland-Buffalo Rd).

Scrappy Cleveland
It's on an east 70 street...the dwellings are north of Euclid, can't remember exactly which street. It possibly extends across Chester. We're not talking about a whole lot here...there are only a few survivors.

Detroit- Woodmere Cemetery
Interesting. Similar to Cleveland's Woodland, even in name.

Scrappy Cleveland
Yes, these residential streets around here can be very lonely as the march of time has taken its toll and many are gone. Here are those houses you speak of. There are actually 3 of them. That street...err, the whole neighborhood north of Euclid and on into Hough... must've been was charming back in the day. The last picture shows a couple surviving homes from that "Ingleside" area (iirc). BTW I haven't heard anything on the hospital.

Cleveland: Jay Avenue Lofts
Walking around 2 Saturdays ago at the Ohio City Christmas Walk I see that the building once (still?) referred to as Jay Avenue Lofts has seemingly been back under renovation for a little while now. I couldn't find anything on line. Moderators - this should probably go back to Northeast Ohio Projects, evidently no longer abandoned? Don't know if name is still Jay Lofts though. (Bad picture)

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
The "1900 Food and Beverage" store on Euclid has a new, rather large illuminated sign above its doors. Looks great, I never would've guessed the one that they just removed was only temporary because it was pretty nice also. Nice investment in that part of Euclid Ave.!

Heck, this is predominantly an "abandonement" thread. I could go to many Northeastern US/ Midwest older cites (and elsewhere) and put together a photo collection like this. The levels of deterioration? The much-beloved Chicago offers these same streetscapes. BTW this is essentially the third photo shoot of some of these features in this thread. As I said, ZachariahDaMan and CorySnyder Smith have done this same exact stuff (and much better than I) so I don't know if these "levels of deterioration" are as compounded as one might think* In ZDM's "Cleveland Urban Exploration" thread you'll see the Westinghouse Electric factory, etc. All this stuff is around the east 50s and east 60s near Carnegie, Cedar and Euclid. I chose to put mine on a separate thread because I wanted to include the new construction/renovations that you see at the end. I had a feeling this was going to be fodder for the rest of Ohio. The abandonement here is really not anything new, the same thing is on other threads on UO. * pictures that are new are the vacated small businesses on Cedar adjacent to the closed manufacturing plants. Also new are the Willson Tower apartments...also, the demolition of the Eton and Rugby buildings.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^ Good suggestions. the "Butcher Block" restaurant with chef Brandt Evans (awesome) is supposed to have its own entrance even though it is associated with Tri-C. I dont think that's enough to qualify for this list. (But I haven't heard much about this lately, maybe it's not going to happen) KJP- you run a tight ship! I can sort of understand your stance on the Art Museum. But beware of the ghost of Sherman Lee for dissing his House of Worship --- enter scary Vincent Price laugh --- LOL Seriously, I think Cleve Hearing and Speech Ctr should be acknowledged, but that's just me.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
What about THE Art Museum? It is the largest cultural project in Ohio history.

Where do you live????
As a native, I thank you for helping to debunk this myth...which is just a lot of phony bullsh!t. And those who subscribe to this are just as phony.

Scrappy Cleveland
Yes, definitely ...and a bit of Carnegie and mostly Euclid. I also have some of the remaining Cedar Ave. housing stock in my (Hidden) History thread. And ZachariahDaMan and CorySnyder Smith have also done the manufacturing places around Cedar (Westinghouse, etc.)

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
The new Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center located at 11635 Euclid Ave. (opened Jan '10?). It's a fine building, imo.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
The Art Museum could be included in this too even though its address is East Blvd. (? or Wade Dr.). It fronts on Euclid Ave. Yeah, this should be it > Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, NE corner of Mayfield, New construction of its first permanent home; $27 million, UNDERWAY

^This thread is for informational purposes, not to speak derogatorily about Cleveland by saying it looks like Detroit, or about Detroit by using it as the comparison. fyi cont'd: These pictures are from a finite area, and while this is found in other parts of Cleveland, it is not on the scale of that found in the Detroit...a city I know and respect very much. No matter. These are 2 cities that helped build America (along with several other Great Lakes cities...Toledo included) and have proud histories.
