  1. Located in Northeast Cleveland, North Collinwood is a neighborhood that has experienced a lot of change in the last decade. It's glory days harken back to the time of the amusement park -- Euclid Beach-- which was a turn-of-last-century favorite. The shores of Lake Erie were mostly for recreation and beaches at that time... and the homes, for the most part, came later in the 1910s-1930s. Lakeshore Blvd. winds its way through the area. Generally, areas south of the Boulevard are in bad shape. But there are sub-neighborhoods north of the Boulevard that were created as Neighborhood Associations when they were developed, usually with private beaches and recreation amenities. And that neighborhood bond has probably sustained these areas to this day. Here's Shore Acres. There are a couple like this north of Lakeshore But actually the 3 or 4 sidestreets of Shore Acres are pretty well-maintained The stalwarts of the community...St. Jerome Church and St. Jerome School The commercial district is on Lakeshore Blvd. and consists of 2-3 story buildings like this, with retail on the first floor and apts above. Unfortunately most of the commercial space is unused...and the apts are probably not very good. Next to Shore Acres is Villa Beach Club, which is a remnant of the summer cottage resorts from the early 1900s
  2. I was over there today and I noticed that Patrizia's just across the street has been emptied out. And the space is for rent. I wonder if that store is moving across the street to the Corbo's place. I hope that it's not leaving the Mayfield & Murray Hill intersection totally...it had great character with the Italian music playing and the Italia Soccer club shirts hanging over the sidewalk... although I think there is another(?) Patrizia's at Random Rd. & Mayfield, or at least it's something very similar. Here is Patrizia's (or was):

    ^ Well said.
  5. Yes, The downtown portions of Euclid (now even beginning to include the CSU area--really), Prospect, Superior and E.9th have varying canyon-like qualities. E. 9th heading North towards the Lake from Progressive Field might be the best, IMHO. SE of Euclid Ave. thinned out ...yes. The worst is as I have said, Public Sq west into the Warehouse District. When the WD lots are replaced (hopefully) with 4-6 story buildings to match the existing structures, it should get better.
  6. I never really thought about Cleveland having or not having a canyon-effect, until friends from Columbus and Dayton some years back said that they definitely got that feeling in downtown Cleveland. They're probably right despite our HUGE sea of surface parking in the heart of downtown :-)
  7. This probably isn't high on anyone's radar right now but it's good to see there is some increased activity and interest with regard to a restored LaSalle. This is close to the Beachland /Waterloo area...would be a good addition to the entire neighborhood. Last week at the LaSalle
  8. I think that's kinda why. Sitting in a car on an almost-vacant Euclid Ave. between E. 30th and E. 79th (honestly, which is the way it is a large chunk of the day) waiting at lights and doing the stop-n-go thing made no sense. It discouraged automobile traffic from using Euclid. You're right, the remaining people that used Euclid Ave. left Euclid during the Corridor construction (they had to...it was off limits in places) and are now using the other streets you mentioned. The way I interpreted it was that we need people (in cars, in buses, on foot) back on Euclid. Trying to make it more user-friendly for all, at least for the time being.
  9. IIRC, I believe I read or heard something a month or two ago that said the traffic lights on Euclid Ave. had been changed in deference to the automobile traffic. And that this change had obviously added time to the HL's trip up and down Euclid, albeit a small amount depending on the time of day. I think they were getting complaints from car drivers about too much stop-n-go driving... Once Euclid gets redeveloped and is more dense/has more users of public transportation, I'm sure the buses will win out in the traffic-light game. Unless everything is knocked down without any immediate rebuilding...then we get the ruralizing of Euclid...then it's anybody's guess as to the traffic lights. But I digress.
  10. Looks like there is some progress being made on the downtown food carts... I remember reading this a while back and was really excited. Any news on this? Cleveland food cart applications due Feb. 22 By Debbi Snook, The Plain Dealer January 19, 2010, 10:28AM Imagine, instead of hot dogs or Polish dogs, you could walk out of an office building or museum in Cleveland and get one of the city's more genteel ethnic treats, such as spinach pie and baba gannoush from Aladdin’s Bakery on Carnegie? Or a cup of Soupermarket soup from the West Side Market neighborhood? Or a Chinese turnip cake from Wonton Gourmet on Payne Avenue? read the rest at: http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/01/cleveland_food_cart_applicatio.html

  12. ^ Yes. Re-purposing.
  13. Neat place. Love the Howland Cultural Center. The exterior is very interesting. From the link you gave...it's a former library and the outside walls are "red and black Croton brick interlaid with light Jersey brick".
  14. I would just call the PD of whatever city you're talking about (I can't tell from your post if it is Shaker...maybe it was a city on your way to Shaker?) and give them the time and location.
  15. Quite possibly, Cleveland's was never finished because a mammoth one (i.e. Detroit) was just 2 hrs away by car.
  16. I didn't know but Detroit's is the largest in the world. It's stunning... Detroit's downtown Masonic
  17. I know the Cleveland one pictured here is the one on Euclid Ave downtown (actually in Midtown)...but there are also Masonic Temple buildings in Cleveland Heights and Lakewood. Also, there is at least 1 abandoned Masonic Temple building (rather large, architecturally significant) in a Cleveland neighborhood that I know of. Maybe another one too , I'll have to find out. Is this the same for any other Ohio cities? To have more than one? I'll try to get pics of these if the clouds/fog ever go away.
  18. There are huge gaps in DT Cleveland too, unfortunately. The most notable is the sea of surface parking lots that extend from... and are a part of...Public Square and go to the Warehouse District, taking up a large part of that area. There are plans to develop these plots in both areas but the banking/lending crisis has thwarted any activity there for now.

Me? nah, not at all The fog has lifted considerably, btw. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

:( I think it is. I can't even see that much right now. I'm expecting Adrienne Barbeau to be knocking on my door any minute. haha
  21. Do they have things in Michigan like the Ohio Historic Tax Credits? These things lessen the financial burden of renovating old buildings. It doesn't stop demolitions, as we can well attest to here in Cleveland. Then again, there are 3+ major cities vying for these credits in Ohio, so not every building in every city is going to win one. And I don't think that's the object anyway. If the state of Michigan had something like this though...Detroit would be the main recipient, of course.

I don't think I have ever seen the fog this thick in downtown Cleveland. It is pea soup fog outside my apartment window. Unbelievable.
  23. What a great rail station. And what a treasure that clock is.
  24. je l'aime, je l'aime, je l'aime.
