Cleveland's Kamm's Corner
Very nice photo set. Kamm's and the West Park area in general have a strong Irish heritage. As someone who is almost all Irish, I wonder if Kathleen's (?) Kitchen is still there on Lorain? :-)

Just a few pictures of inside the Higbee Building.
Here is a picture of Euclid Ave looking east towards Playhouse Sq (ca. 1960) You can see Bonwit-Teller. Today it is home to the corporate offices of The United Way...it is the really beautiful building next to the Idea Center.

Here is a picture of the Bailey's demolition in 1963 Here is the 1910 Higbee Building at the corner of E. 13th & Euclid, later to be the Lindner-Davis store, then finally part of the Sterling-Lindner-Davis Department store. The Sterling Building is on the left.

^^No. You're right though there was a dept. store there--- Bailey's. And it was in an historic bldg, but it was on Prospect. I was narrowing my post to those places that were on Euclid Ave. and the one on Public Sq (Higbee's). I shouldn't have done that since several places had main, formal entrances on Euclid, but also auxiliary entrances on Prospect. Bailey's was taken over by May Co and then torn down in the 60s for May's multi-level parking garage. It was a way to compete with the new-fangled malls and car generation of the suburbs. Sterling-Lindner, at E. 13th & Euclid, was unfortunately torn down for a surface parking lot and for the unremarkable Continental Buillding (now called the Sterling Building). Actually, the Lindner-Davis Building...the one that abutted E. 13th St...of the Sterling-Lindner complex was the 1910 Higbee building before they moved to this Public Sq location in 1931

I know everybody has their own opinion... But I don't understand the naysayers of areas/neighborhoods like this. I mean the architecture is great and, yes, there are probably holes in the urban fabric. But at least there is some forward momentum. Good pics Zack. This is a terrific little bldg

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I don't know if this has been discussed in this thread but early this morning I see that Metropolitan Cafe in the WD has closed for renovations, etc. The paper is up on the windows and there are "coming soon" signs for The Metro Bar & Kitchen. I'm glad. That space needed an update and a refresher of its image. Didn't have the camera or else I would 've gotten a pic. Too much snow anyway... Now if only XO would liven itself up... Also, the window paper has come down from Chinato. Depending on how fast they work and get occupancy permits, etc. , it looks like it could open relatively soon. And the 3 huge "For Lease" signs have been taken down from the windows of the old Indigo's in the Colonial Arcade. I always thought the Sports Hall Of Fame Restaurant was going there. I know there is a specific thread for that but I couldn't gather if it's still going in that location or not. Anyway, something must be.

This place is very cool. It must be a difficult place to photograph. Great effort.- A Rejuvenated Over-the-Rhine (Cincinnati)
Gorgeous restorations. An Ohio treasure.- Just a few pictures of inside the Higbee Building.
The great thing is, is that this dept. store building is still here in addition to these others on Euclid: The May Co Taylor's , which will soon open up as residential/retail--- The 668 Bldg Halle's Bonwit-Teller (home to United Way Services now) Only the Sterling-Lindner complex of bldgs are gone (and Bond Dept store too, but it wasn't as historical as these other 6)- CANCUN (and Tulum, and a little bit of Dallas)
Beautiful pics. Great hotel lobby!- Midtown Cleveland
Winter night on Upper Prospect , end '09- Greendale, Ohio
Your pictures here as in other threads are great. You capture scenes so well. As an aside... I'm sure most of the people in Greendale are good people, but some of the pictures remind me of what you'd see in movies like The Strangers or Vacancy. Good place to make a scary movie.- Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Because the monument is (1) much more than a mound of dirt and (2) is much narrower, blocking a lot less. Besides, I personally just think the mound will look ugly and fake, like something you'd see around a retention basin or next to the checkers board at Crocker Park. It surely wouldn't fit into what was designed as a New England-style town center. Exactly. This trellis and hill are like putting aluminum siding on a wood-clapboard Victorian. Looks hokey.- Recession 09: Dallas & Austin

It's not that much higher. I don't have a chart full of sightlines and these 3 proposals are, just that, proposals. But, as proposed, this hill and these awful trellises (IMHO) would certainly have to block some "vistas" that are there now. And option #2 ...or some version of it... also could go awry if they overkill this tree idea. I'm all for trees, but too many, especially when they are mature, block the views of the great architecture around the Square. Option #2 is the better of the three. But, like I said, it'd be good to get residents' input- Recession 09: Dallas & Austin
A few times on UO I've mentioned how Cleveland is my favorite city ( born, raised, and continue to live here) and that Detroit is my second favorite city. I haven't needed to mention the fact that Dallas is my #3. Until now. Usually when I tell people this, they can understand why I love Cleveland...some jaws drop when I mention Detroit...but almost all jaws drop when I tell 'em Dallas. But thanks to this photo thread, people might be able to see why.- Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I think it would be really interesting and helpful to hear what a resident , or a prospective resident, of the Park Building would have to say about this. I mean, they are actual stakeholders in this "neighborhood" (i.e. Public Square). Not to mention the possible upper-floor conversions (to residential) in other Public Square or near-Public Square buildings. The idea is to one day have many residents living around or near the Square. So it would probably make sense to know what a PS resident thinks of a roundabout with little or no traffic signals. Or definitely what they would think of a hill in the middle of the Square. I highly doubt someone who has paid, or is thinking of paying, hundreds of thousands of dollars for a Park unit would want a man-made obstruction of their views. This would be the case especially on the lower to middle floors of the Park. Even those trellises with hanging vines would make for a possibly awkward environment for some PS residents. I know that there are only Park Building residents on the Square now, and many units-- including the Penthouses (some of those are in the millions of dollars)-- are not even finished/inhabited. Yes...at the moment, there are not many people to ask. But I think their ideas should be given consideration. It'd be interesting to hear PS residents' objections or recommendations.- Cleveland: Demolition Watch
I got a glance---and I mean a quick glance---yesterday driving past the intersection of 105th & Carnegie and it looks like they're putting the finishing touches on the surface pkg lot where the Art deco OCPM stood just a couple months ago. I know the usage of that land was not initially intended for this. And I know the CCF needs parking. But what Cleveland doesn't need is more surface parking! And especially to lose a gem of a building.- Cleveland: Demolition Watch
It appears as though city planners, etc. have drawn a line in the sand. It seems like there is a concerted effort to preserve and restore stuctures from the river to approximately E. 55th St. A lot of that is evidenced by the ongoing and future restoration plans for Lower Euclid/E.4th/Prospect. And, for the most part, CSU and the closer-in part of Midtown. Then it seems like there's a vast area between E. 55th and E. 105th that is fair game for demolition (the larger part of Midtown). THis area includes all these available parcels (we can knock it down for you and make it available) for companies/hospitals and also a carte blanche check for anything that the Cleveland Clinic wants to do. Then there seems to be a relatively favorable attitude towards preservation between E. 105th and stretching possibly into historic East Cleveland. With sensitive infill to enhance the University Circle neighborhood. Maybe I'm just speaking the obvious but it helps me accept things like this E.97th demolition better. Even though it really is inexcusable. - Case Western Warner and Swasey Observatory
