  1. Great subject, CS. And terrific pics too. When I've driven down MLK lately there is a bridge with a winding staircase that is closed to pedestrians. There is some sort of gate(?) in front of the staircase and a sign that says it is un-usable, or some such thing. Off the top of my head, I don't know if there are other bridges with winding staircases. If this is the only one, then it has not been removed. (It was there as of last Monday) Your google maps pic looks like the bridge I'm talking about.
  2. I like the lighted street arches. That's a nice long stretch of those, I believe.

MidwestChamp, thanks for the Asian Town Center update and link. I didn't realize this was gonna be so big (115,000 sf).

Reagan Aaahhhh the 80s. I bet if you shut your eyes and listen close enough, you can still hear New Order, Ministry, Depeche, etc.etc. in the WD walls.

^^Hmmmm I don't remember that. But on a much more boring note...I remember when Cleveland Chophouse had an outdoor patio off the back of their restaurant, it was perched out into this courtyard. I wonder if that is still there?
  6. This is a bit off topic from this thread but... Jborger I can somewhat feel your pain. Some of my apt. windows look out over that decrepit riverside fountain and some of the burned-out lights. I don't even know who to start calling on those things (the bridges are maintained by a variety of entities), so i haven't. But if you do find out who the property managers are of some of the places that are lax, that's the best thing to do. I harped on the exterior lights of the Arcade's Euclid and Superior sides and they eventually were replaced, and now it looks great re-lit. Maybe it was my emails/calls...maybe it wasn't. But it's worth a try. The Bulkley Building in PHS I have asked about lately. Mr. Einhouse emailed me that the bidding is to begin soon on the exterior scrubbing of that building. And also in a few years the cornice is to be repaired ( and thankfully uncovered --that wire mesh removed), it really is a beautiful building. Just try and find out who actually is the responsible party for maintenance. And start there.

Yes. I guess I pay "absurdly-geeky attention" (lol) too to different aspects of a possible picture. Living downtown allows me to capture things at different times of day, or with any number of backgrounds (sunny,gray,cloudy,dusk,etc.). Almost like a full-time "access" to different shots. I did get lucky on many of these though...most of the street-level shots were taken one late afternoon while walking around. Things like the orange-colored trees against the orange seats of Cleveland Browns stadium... I couldn't have ordered that up any better. Or the bus that just happened to drive in front of the Greyhound Station as I walked by. Or the two silver/gray cars in front of the slate-gray colored Statler Apts. Thanks for the "Iconic" comment. I got that shot as I was getting carried away with ideas for different angles.

Well thank you very much KJP. :-)

I just got home and this is the first time that I've checked on this thread since I posted it yesterday...I just had absolutely not one free minute at work. I'm glad that everybody likes this post. I thought I'd wait on posting it until early December when the gray skies and leaf-less trees can start to get a little boring. MayDay is the master of Cleveland photography...I'm a novice...I've already told him that. Yes from the top of Crittenden. Also, I was really just focusing on architectural detail, for the most part. SfBob, Have you not seen my Broadway/Slavic Village thread, Asiatown thread or Midtown thread (not so much a "neighborhood" anymore, I know...but it could be)? :-) I guess I'll have to do OC, Tremont, Little Italy, etc. LOL The Hermit Club is a gem. It is truly a hidden place. I almost wish it was right out on the main drag because it's such a neat place.
  10. Random photos from different areas of downtown...October/November 2009 Moving from west to east, starting in the West Flats going over to E.17th St
  11. Public Square Cleveland, 12.11.09
  12. I think this may be a downtown location of the "To Go Hungarian" in Willoughby http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/16/1483017/restaurant/Cleveland/Wickliffe-Willowick-Willoughby/To-Go-Hungarian-Food-Willoughby

Nice job! I'm glad you included that great close-up of The United Bank... and Iggy's.
  14. Great shots! I'm embarassed to say that I did not know that this was a W&S building. I know about the observatory in East Cleve but not this. This is one of the best warehouse structures in Midtown. I pray it doesn't bite the dust like so many other structures are currently in that area.
  15. I think their leasing office on W. 25th St was open for maybe a couple months and then the real estate meltdown happened. This project is indefinitely(?) in some kind of holding pattern.
  16. I've never been to St. Louis but any pictures I've seen always amaze me. The architecture is wonderful. Nice pics.
  17. Also, at the end of this article they talk about the possible (probable?) renovation of that terrific Brothers Printing Building that was a Studebaker Dealership. Apartments are to go upstairs with the Printing business remaining on the ground floor. Nice.

My answer would be "yes". Maybe phased in later, if it is not done initially. I don't have anything to back that up, except that the developers seem, at this point in time, committed to making this work.
  19. ^Thanks Robert Great advice
  20. I shouldn't post this mediocre quality photo (I didn't have a tripod) but the scene was too good to resist last night, Tuesday 12.01.09. The sky was so clear the entire day over Cleveland and this is a shot of the remaining oranges from the sunset, the full moon already bright in the sky and the Christmas lights of Public Square:

There should be some sort of traffic-calming measures taken. If that means some sort of signage, etc. (any signage)... then it would be a good thing. Traffic on Payne, St. Clair, and Superior flies by...sometimes almost dangerously so.

Are there any construction-permit people out there who could answer this question: When the tops of ALL the parking meters are removed from a street, does that mean a street is being torn up? the sidewalk is being torn up? both? Or does it mean that the street space is needed to park dumpsters and other construction equipment? That's what I've noticed on Rockwell...all the meters are removed...on BOTH sides of the street

One thing that is unfortunate about the Old Chinatown on Rockwell is how the Plain Dealer Hdqtrs (on Superior) has usurped the entire block of Rockwell Ave. behind their building (for their Parking Lot). This has cut off Old Chinatown's direct link to downtown, especially the emerging Avenue District area of eastern downtown. It's an example of the Plain Dealer physically standing in the way of something. It's really unfortunate. I don't know when this happened but hopefully it can be reversed.

I think the odds are with this area getting better in the coming years.
