  1. Tech giants offer ideas on charging readers online Sep 11, 7:14 AM (ET) By ANDREW VANACORE "NEW YORK (AP) - Some of the world's most prominent technology companies are offering suggestions to publishers on how they can charge readers for news online." http://apnews.myway.com//article/20090911/D9AL32CG1.html
  2. Any word from the attorney's yet? We have been given until Tuesday, Sept. 14th - that came from the folks who initially contacted us, and after we asked for more time. That said, that's very reasonable but it should be noted - if there are threads which don't follow guidelines, they'll be removed. Again - the red checkmarks next to each thread indicate that they've been cleaned up. Thank you all for helping us to resolve this - your efforts are appreciated. I was wondering what the red check marks were all about. I thought maybe they were the one's that still needed to be cleaned up. But it's just the opposite. Anyway- now I know what they are all about.
  3. Well I just hope it really works out this time. There has been attempts to restore and/or open it before and for whatever reason they just never panned out. I have fond memories of the Arcade from my childhood.

Hopefully this will help get the point across: http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_main You know there were many who said that the Wright Brother's were wasting their time.

That's just it. You wouldn't be paying an additional 30 percent. The taxes are already embedded. Geez- I'm not very good at explaining it. Did you also read about the "pre-bate?" Again about all I can do is to ask you to check out the Web site and read what it's all about. There are also several books you can read on it as well (however not all of them are favorable about the FairTax). http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer
  6. From Dayton Daily News: Urban Nights visitors will get last look at historic Arcade Historic downtown site to get a $30 million restoration. By Margo Rutledge Kissell, Staff Writer http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/urban-nights-visitors-will-get-last-look-at-historic-arcade-287157.html?cxntnid=dlh-090809
  7. Yes- I agree very much with this one. My dad (God rest his soul) was a "Union Man" but I never saw that it did him any good. Maybe for a while but after he was "forced" to retire I never saw him get any help from the union and even after all the union dues he paid I don't think he received anything in return. Yet he continued to defend them. He worked for Dayton Typographic which eventually went out of business. I could go on and on about the problems with unions but I won't right now. I think they started off well enough and with good intentions, but you know the saying about good intentions.
  8. Yes- this is basically how I feel. Pretty depression, huh? I just can't help feeling that Dayton did (and possibly does) have potential but the "so called leaders" missed the boat of the point or whatever. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong, how it went went wrong & just when it went wrong, but it did. Such a shame. :(
  9. I noticed a lot of reposted articles from the Dayton Daily News and other papers in the Restaurants & Entertainment Forums in the posts about "Closings & Relocations"
  10. I miss New Jersey for those reasons and also for the fact that I have some family there. My dad was born in NYC but grew up in Morristown, NJ. I have a half-sister who lives in Randolph and a niece in Newton. I had another half-sister who lived in Blairstown but she died in 2006 of lung cancer. I thought New Jersey was an interesting place to live. Lot's history there. I'd love to go back and check out some of the historical areas such as Jockey Hollow and also areas where my ancestors lived.
  11. Shhhnanigan's-Dayton I know there used to be a bar in Dayton called Shhhnanigan's but apparently they are closed now. I know there is a Shhhnanigan's II in Fairborn. I spoke with someone the other day and she told me there used to be 2 in Dayton but both are closed and one was torn down. She said that there was one on Main St near Miami Valley Hospital but I haven't seen it as I am in that area quite often so - my guess is- that is the one they tore down. I just remember seeing one with a mural of NASCAR driver's on it and cars. They were done in charicachure (sp?). I want to take a picture of it if it's still there. Please if anyone knows where this is I'd appreciate if you can help me find it. Thanks

I give up! Obviously people (not everyone mind you) just don't get it. I guess they prefer to have money taken from their paychecks every week. I guess they prefer having to deal with all those forms, etc. every April and worry if they've calculated it all right, etc. Whatever. May as well tell it to the walls.

Sorry but graphs like these just confuse the hell out of me.

Well I guess you are entitled to your opinion. I happen to think it's a Great Idea but sad-to-say there are too many people with closed minds and people who don't or won't bother to try to understand it. *sighs again and bangs head on desk*
  16. Well it was my husband's idea to move back to Dayton actually. I liked New Jersey (except for the high taxes & cost of living). I miss it too (New Jersey -not the high taxes and cost of living). But anyway... Oddly enough it was his idea to move back here and to move in next to my parents of all things. Go figure! Sad to say- my husband passed away 10 years ago this past April. We haven't lived next to my parents for many years. We moved across town in 1996. Also my mom moved to NC in 1991 and my father passed away in 1992. My mom died in 2005. But I'm getting off the subject. I do feel sometimes like I'm stuck here. I can't really afford to move. Even a move to a different area of town or to another city in Ohio is kind of out of the question for me right now. Long story. What really stinks is there's no work in this town. Not many opportunities. That's how I see it anyway. *sigh*

  18. What comes to mind when you hear the word(s) Dayton or Dayton, Ohio? Also- what does Dayton mean to you? Do you see it in a positive light or negative? Do you think Dayton has unfulfilled potential? What do you think Dayton is doing right or doing wrong? I've lived in Dayton on & off (mostly on) for about 39 years. My husband and I moved from here in 1971 and lived in several different places until 1986 when we moved back here from New Jersey. I've been here ever since. Sometimes I feel like I am stuck here. Sometimes I feel like I want to leave. But then there are things I like about Dayton. I won't list them for now. I feel though that with the pull-out of so many businesses, etc. that Dayton is headed in the wrong direction. I pray that we can and will make a comeback. Just a few thoughts.

This is more of a pet peeve of mine that argument for or against any kind of tax change. Articles for tax change always iclude the percent change from todays dollars but never include that really doesn't mean much. The market is effecient at resetting its self. Overall purchasing power (as awarded in the form of an employee's worth in salary) is pretty much set, the amount of dollars may change due to the tax and cost of living (which is now directly related to housing prices) climate in a particular region. My example is that salaries in Texas for roughly the same position as in Ohio, are less due to the lack of a state income tax. Speaking at a Macro level, Yes taxes are lower but so are salaries, so it really is a zero sum game. I'm sorry I don't want to be mad at anyone but I can't help but feel you didn't read either the article or the information page. I could be wrong. I just get the feeling you either don't agree that it's a good idea or you somehow missed the point entirely. Again- I don't mean to start an argument but it bothers me when people find reasons that this is either not a good idea or that it won't work. It sure sounds a lot better than what we have now. Well I don't know why my response is showing up in quote(s) but anyway..... Tried to fix it but it's not working. :( fixed - xumelanie
  20. I have noticed blank spots where pictures should be. I usually just right click and then hit View Image or whatever and then it will bring up the picture. But then I have to hit "Go back one page" and repeat for all of the pictures I want to see. It does take some work. :(
  21. This article explains it all so much better than I can: <a href="http://www.examiner.com/x-11887-Milwaukee-County-Conservative-Examiner~y2009m9d2-Many-people-can-benefit-from-a-FairTax">Many people can benefit from a FairTax</a> Also see: <a href="http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer">What is the FairTax?</a>
  22. Yes- I agree. I really need to get over to the DAI more often. I want to get some pictures of the "cloisters" In some ways I like that they enclosed part of them but in other ways I wish they hadn't. But still there is something "magical" or "mystical" about them. I can't explain it. I wish the entrance to the DAI was still in front, but I guess I can understand why they moved it.

  24. I don't know. I am quite sure she used to be out front but did notice some time ago she was no longer there. Then when I was taking pictures over that way I was behind the DAI and saw that. I guess I could maybe call and ask someone what the deal is. I don't even know what she's called. That's terrible on my part. Still I just think it's sad she's in such a bad state.
  25. Oh yeah- you're right- I think it is the Golden Girls. Wasn't really sure who it was. Thanks. :) :D ROTFL
