Quicken Loans expanding to Cleveland
Here is an article from the PD Could Quicken come here? Chairman considering move that would bring 3,500 jobs Friday, March 24, 2006 Teresa Dixon Murray and Joe Guillen Plain Dealer Reporters Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is dangling the prospect of Cleveland as a potential site for a new national headquarters for his 3,500-employee Quicken Loans. In announcing the April 3 opening of a mortgage office with 300 to 350 new $85,000-a-year jobs in Tower City Center, Gilbert on Thursday also said he wants to build a new national headquarters to replace his spread-out operations in Livonia, Mich., a Detroit suburb. The office leases there end in 2009. While that might seem a long time off, if the company is going to build, it needs to get started in the next year or so. Quicken Loans expanding to Cleveland
Good point lets go out and get those jobs! I still think it is unlikely that they will relocate due to having to move 3,500 people. It's fun just to speculate what would/could happen....It's been kind of slow in here lately.

Quicken Loans expanding to Cleveland
^ I read an article on Skyscraperpage.com that said that Cleveland was a long shot for the Headquarter's. There is absolutely no way Gilbert will leave Michigan, and hopefully he chooses to re-locate in downtown Detroit. It would be nice to see this new office not only reach its goal of 300-350, but also surpass it and add even more jobs in downtown Cleveland.

^ Yeah but the "off" nights are becoming a little to common for them. I hate to say it but I don't think they get out of the first round.

Companies that call Cleveland home
Here is some info on a few of these companies. OM Group: Overview Mmmmetals is the mantra for OM Group (OMG). The company produces metal-based specialty chemicals for about 30 industries, including aerospace, automotive, computer, construction, and consumer electronics. OMG produces base metal chemistry products such as organics, inorganics, powders, and metals (nickel, cobalt, and copper). It offers about 1,500 products to roughly 3,300 customers; about two-thirds of the company's sales are in Finland. The company more than doubled in size in 2001 when it acquired the precious metals and metals management unit of Degussa Metals Catalyst Cerdec (dmc2). The deal didn't work out as well as OMG had hoped, though; OMG has sold the unit to Belgian metals giant Umicore. Company Type Public (NYSE: OMG) Fiscal Year-End December 2005 Sales (mil.) $1,249.6 1-Year Sales Growth (7.3%) 2005 Net Income (mil.) $36.7 1-Year Net Income Growth (71.5%) 2005 Employees 1,451 1-Year Employee Growth 1.8% Located in Key Tower Cleveland Cliffs: Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America. Cliffs sells the majority of its pellets to integrated steel companies in the United States and Canada. The Company operates six iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada that currently have the capacity to produce 37.7 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Based on its percentage ownership of the mines it operates, Cliffs' share of the rated pellet production capacity is currently 23.1 million tons annually, representing approximately 28 percent of the total North American annual pellet capacity. The Company sells its share of iron ore production to integrated steel producers, generally pursuant to term supply agreements with various price adjustment provisions. The North American integrated steel industry is undergoing a restructuring process. This process is, in Cliffs' view, producing a stronger, more productive industry through consolidation and some rationalization of less efficient capacity. The iron ore industry is also restructuring to meet the challenging needs of its customers. It is Cliffs' goal to lead this consolidation process and to continue to improve the competitiveness of its operations. Cleveland-Cliffs and its associated companies employ approximately 4,000 people at operations located in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. Located at 1100 Superior (I think that is the Diamond Building). Ferro Corporation: Overview Ferro is a leading global producer of technology-based performance materials for manufacturers, ranking as the world’s largest supplier of: Electronic materials for passive components used in the manufacture of multilayer ceramic capacitors; Specialty glass and colorants; Ceramic glaze frit and stain technology; and Porcelain enamel frit. In the United States, Ferro holds strong market positions in polymer additives and specialty plastic compounds and colorants. Ferro materials enhance the performance of products in a variety of end markets, including electronics, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, building and renovation, appliances, automotive, household furnishings, and industrial products. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Ferro has global operations selling products in more than 100 countries and employs approximately 7,000 people. Located at 1000 Lakeside Ave.

Events that Draw a Street Crowd in Your City
I wish Cleveland would have a parade for opening day. It sounds like Cincy really puts on a show for opening day. Also, I heard a rumor the the east 185th street festival may not be happening this year. Can anyone confirm if this rumor is true/untrue. I heard a few years back that the 5 day event drew around 1,000,000 people.

^ I forgot about them! When you listed Pierre's, it reminded me that Ruggle's ice cream (and their damn jingle) are from Cleveland, and don't forget about Dairymen's.

Cleveland - New Townhomes Catch Fire
It sucks that these townhomes caught fire, but it is GREAT news that they are going to rebuild, and even better news that ALL units in the first phase are sold. Fire strikes Westside home development By STAN BULLARD 8:45 am, March 20, 2006 Rebuilding plans were under way Friday at Ameri-Con Homes after a Thursday fire destroyed a six-unit townhouse under construction at Ashbury Towers, its 150-unit West Side subdivision. Jeffrey Simler, Ameri-Con vice president, said he was getting rebuilding bids Friday. www.plaindealer.com

Companies that call Cleveland home
Yes but as of right now, they are still MBNA. Even though they are still MBNA, they are not HQ'ed in Cleveland.
-
Companies that call Cleveland home
^ No. I think they are HQ'ed in Delaware. Plus were sold to Bank of America last summer.

Companies that call Cleveland home
^ A lot of those companies you listed are not located in Cleveland. U-Store-It is located in Middleburgh Heights, and ICI Paints is located in Strongsville.

I found this article on Cleveland.com TransDigm IPO sets price: $21 a share 10:13 a.m. TransDigm Group Inc., which makes aircraft parts, set the price of its initial public offering of stock at $21 a share. The shares will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TDG. The Cleveland company is issuing 11 million shares, with an option that could add about 1.5 million more. I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread focusing on companies that are based in Cleveland, but that many people do not know about.

Ohio's tallest
^ Maybe they will move some employee's when the East Bank gets built. I've always wondered about K&D, not that they would build a skyscraper in downtown, but maybe a mid-rise office building (5-10 stories)down in their Stonebridge development. It would be great if Sherwin Williams would move more into the center of the city, because I think their land is valuable and could be used for a great development. When ISG was buying steel mills left and right 3-4 years ago I thought that maybe they would move to downtown, but then they were bought out and I don't see that happening anymore. In related news there is an article posted on another thread that says class A vacancy rates are down to 12%, but class B & C were 22% and 32% respectively. Hopefully the Case move happens, and I am hoping that UHHS decides to move those 600+ employees to Euclid Ave.

No matter how you spell it, Cincinnatti's the enemy - ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
What a dumb article. I think the people of St. Louis are getting a little to cocky about their new ballpark, and this is why they think they can put down other peoples cities. I would bet that Cincy has twice as many fortune 500 companies as St. Louis. On the other hand, at least he is not bashing his own city, like all of the Plain Dealer reporters.

Ohio's tallest
Maybe National City, and that is if they make another large aquisition. With vacancy rates around 24% I don't think we will be seeing much high-rise construction (except residential) anytime soon.

Cleveland: Biotech Business News & Info
I thought we could use this thread for all of Cleveland's bio-tech news. If anyone thinks we should start a seperate thread go ahead. Imalux gets Chinese distributor 11:09 a.m. Beijing Goodwell Co. has agreed to distribute in China the Niris Imaging System of Cleveland's Imalux Corp. Beijing Goodwell will promote, sell and service the system that uses optical coherence tomography to produce images of human tissue abnormalities, including some cancers. Doctors can use the images to diagnose and treat diseases in urology, gastroenterology, gynecology, dermatology, and dentistry. Imalux is just beginning to market its imaging system, which is small, portable and produces images with harmless near-infrared light. OCT could become the sixth major medical-imaging modality, joining the likes of X-rays and MRIs.

Cleveland: Biotech Business News & Info
Umm...... I don't think the PD lets anything hit the press without some amount of negativity in it. I just don't understand that papers problem. Anyways, if some of these companies can make it, Cleveland will be a very different place in 20 years. I always pictured UC as a place for a drug/biotech companies headquarters.

Cleveland: Biotech Business News & Info
The thing that seperates Cleveland from San Francisco and Boston is that they have very well established bio-tech companies. I am not positive but I think both Amgen and Genentech are located in northern California, and Boston has Boston Scientific. I would worry less about the negative in this article and focus on the fact that he said a couple of the Cleveland companies were poised to become gangbusters.
