US Economy: News & Discussion
^you can't design the economy to take care of these people - they will always find a way to be poor. Bad decisions, poor work ethic, self inflicted health issues from smoking/drinking/bad diet, etc Design the economy to reward those who work, save, invest, educate themselves. Show them a path to financial success. 401k's can work just fine. Of course they aren't like a pension but that system is gone for the private sector and it' ain't coming back. As far as the "dragon hoard" economy, I couldn't disagree more. The gains in the stock market are having real impacts in average American's lives. Pretty much anyone with a home, a job and any sort of retirement savings have seen their wealth grow. Older Americans who might've thought they couldn't retire may now be considering it with the gains in the stock market and housing sector. That opens up more jobs for young people. Talk to pretty much anyone these days from a carpenter to a baker to a computer programmer and ask if they are busy, work going well and they'll say yes.

Cleveland: Has anyone bought a city land bank property?
I worked on several landbank owned parcels back in 2010-2012 that were redeveloped. All were on commercial strips and had environmental issues, old fuel tanks, soil contamination. Not trying to scare you but just be ware. Engage a good firm for Environmental Phase 1 & Phase 2 if needed. Make the sale/transfer contingent on clean site. If prior use was residential, good chance you may find an abandoned septic system too or most likely a basement that was improperly backfilled & still has foundations below grade. Ideally you should get the site for free so long as you have a good plan for reuse. Plus you should get tax abatement for 15 yrs going forward. Good luck & keep us informed!

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
That building is a tank. It's very sound. They've done a good job keeping it weather tight. The slabs are ridiculously thick. So think it's probably a challenge to re-purpose for residential...

Cleveland: FBI, IRS, HUD make nighttime raid on City Hall
Guilty of being stupid. I'd say just the opposite. I think Frank is clean and honest and probably not worried about the investigation at all from a personal standpoint

Cleveland: FBI, IRS, HUD make nighttime raid on City Hall
I doubt it also. Feds move slowly. If they wanted him gone, could've made the raid before the election....

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
^Michigan lost a ton of players this past year. This season was a true rebuilding year. Next year they are stacked, they hardly lose anyone. The QB position killed them this year. O'Korn was terrible.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Alabama already a betting favorite over top seed Clemson... lots of talk about the "trust factor" that OSU cannot be trusted, as in, you have no idea what this team will do. Between looking brilliant and looking hapless, it really is a coin toss

Ohio: Marijuana Industry
For comparison, one of the highest scores went to "Buckeye Relief". Their website is below but the ownership/leadership team includes attorneys who have been part of the cannabis legislation since day 1. They have a former secret service agent in charge of security, they have experienced growers, chemists and dispensary managers. They also own land in Eastlake for their grow site, already have it zoned for this use, have construction plans done & approved and bids from contractors ready to go. http://www.buckeyerelief.com/our-team/

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I really don't understand the rising trend of murders. With all the digital info out there and technology to aid in policing, it seems hard to believe that police can't get the main offenders off the streets. Stem the flow of guns & drugs.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
OSU ranked lower than I expected to see them last night but they still have a fairly clear path to the final four. OSU currently at #8 (10-2) - beat Wisconsin (doesn't have to be a blowout, but a clean game, decisive win would be good) - Clemson beats Miami. Clemson stays in top 4, Miami drops out of top 10 with 2 recent losses - Auburn beats Georgia. Georgia drops back with 2 losses, no conf title. This game could go the other way & probably help by pushing Auburn out (3 losses) and Alabama farther down - Oklahoma beats TCU. Of all these scenarios, I think the riskiest matchup is OSU winning their game. Wisconsin is a good team, plays hard on both sides, well coached. OSU needs to start fast & build a lead. If they can get Wisconsin out of the run-first game plan, it could allow the defense to make some more plays. Would also love to see Weber/Dobbins get 25+ carries. Would take so much pressure off Barrett & the passing game

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Barrett regressed this week. He goes through his progressions like a robot. He stares the receivers down and if they aren't open by 3 steps, he doesn't throw it. He has no ability to "throw a man open" or to look the safeties off. Watch the highlights of Baker Mayfield - he throws it where his guys can only get it. They aren't always wide open. By the time Barrett goes to his checkdown, they are covered. All the INT's he threw on Saturday, the receiver was NOT open and he was trying to force the throw. In most cases, he had plenty of time yet and wasn't being forced out of the pocket yet. He should be throwing on the run a lot more with designed rollouts. The offense still seems unable/unwilling to complete long pass plays over the top. I can't believe our receivers cant beat their man downfield.

Defense better get it's act together - if they don't play alot better they will lose to UM for sure

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
For some reason that loss yesterday felt even worse than the beatdown by Clemson last year. Probably because it wasn't supposed to happen, Iowa was unranked, etc. The legend of Urban Meyer is getting tarnished

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Back in November. Portside has also closed: http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/09/portside_brewery-distillery_in.html Coincidental that both these places were on the "back side" of the FEB development. Minimal exposure

In my mind, it has to be coaching/game plan/preparation. There's no way the talent of the players at OSU is lacking

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Wait...what? They beat four Top 15 opponents last season, including two on the road, and one at home by almost 60 points. Ok I was exaggerating in my comment but I wouldn't call Nebraska a signature win. They lost 4 games including the bowl game to Tennessee. Pretty lame season

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
The scouting report is out on him. Give up the short pass underneath, but not the long ball. Let OSU have the dinks/dunks. Not sure why they can't just line up under center & run off tackle every couple plays. Get some positive yardage, then setup play action pass... maybe a little old-school but it works

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Legend of Urban Meyer is getting whittled away. When was their last signature win against a big opponent? The 2014 title game of course but what since then?

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
huge matchup today. I think the Defense wins it for the Buckeyes today. I expect the offense to do just enough to win, but defense will stuff the run & pressure Mayfield into some bad throws & turn the ball over. I don't expect Coach Meyer to show a whole lot of offense yet either. Penn State is still over a month away

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
zone won't run for mayor. he's unknown on the east side and he's been on council forever. The side gig he's got is just something else to focus on. he's probably ready to start pulling a pension considering how long he's been a councilman. He & his wife are empty nesters now. He travels & plays golf. Being a mayor is a lot of work

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
I love how controversial this Shoreway project has been - literally for 10+ years, people have been hating on it or loving it. Very little in between, even now as its nearly complete

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Boy did you miss the extensive rework of tunnels at Lake, 76th & new access at 73rd which required massive sewer relocation, railroad bridge, etc. Glorified repaving indeed... I guess I'm just bitter after listening to pile driving for 2 years.... and dealing with mud all over the streets from all the excavation trucking... Complaining about Edgewater being a traffic jam and complaining about the speed on the Shoreway sort of conflict each other to me. Just park nearby and walk in or bike in via one of the tunnels and ignore the speeding traffic/traffic jams. at a certain point, it's silly to complain about the traffic in & out of the park. Metroparks has done an amazing job transforming the place and programming some great events. It's a huge park. It's going to be busy. Sort of like trying to go to the zoo on a sunny Saturday morning. Or a concert at Blossom. You just deal with it because it's a cool place and everyone wants to be there. At least at Edgewater, you have other options to get in on foot/bike, whatever

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Actually I'd say the presence of the railroad wrecked it. No way to make all those pass throughs to connect with the railroad in the way. And the massive sewer line which required relocation for the 65th tunnel.... But hey, we have great access points now to Edgewater at Lake, 76th, 73rd, 65th. That's 4 points in less than a 2 mile stretch. It's better access than what Chicago has to it's lakefront...

The total eclipse sounds pretty cool. I watched it downtown Cleveland - it was cool to watch with the glasses but with naked eye, it was not any more dramatic than a slightly overcast day.
