  1. back when the FEB was coming out of the ground, I heard that Cleveland Public Power agreed to relight the underside of that bridge so long as the FEB development used CPP instead of First Energy. I guess it ain't happening.

^at this point in her career, would mayor of Cleveland even be considered a step up? I think she's certainly qualified. Heck, Frank Jackson doesn't even have a college degree... Nina Turner has a masters. In all seriousness, she's been involved in politics a long time, started out in Mayor Mike White's administration, so she's experienced in Cleveland business. Her connections at the state level could certainly help Cleveland as well.

last winter was a record setter for days below freezing. I'm wondering how this year is shaping up by comparison.

^jeff johnson the convicted felon? I can't believe he's even allowed to be a councilman let alone mayor. If he is Cleveland's most electable candidate, we have some real issues. What about Cimperman? What about Chris Ronayne?
  5. it's easy to be disappointed with Coral group for the delays on this project but they had the most aggressive development proposed and UCI chose them over other developers who pitched much simpler, easily achieved developments. UCI has stuck with Coral group even though the 1 year deadline came & went about 2 yrs ago... As the real estate market continues to improve, I think we'll see this development be revisited by Coral group or some other developer, with something more simple, more easily achieved
  6. It's NOT the same as DCA, really not at all, not in any way. DCA is a property assessment and believe owners can actually opt out if they choose to. Aside from that, it's core services are "clean & safe" ambassadors, economic development, marketing & advocacy. This proposed tax at FEB is a TAX on goods & services, born by the consumer, not the property owner, and the proceeds are used for maintenance and other capital improvements like lighting & landscaping & such.
  7. I think it looks great. Chip Marous in the foreground of the photo. Interesting that Marous/Vintage has started their development in Battery Park with City Architecture, then moved on to Dimit and is now working with LDA on this latest development
  8. It's interesting that FEB keeps getting compared to Crocker Park. On that comparision, does anyone know if Westlake has a special improvement tax or provides extra funding or services for maintenance and improvements at the property or is it all the sole responsibility of Stark, the developer?
  9. I'm not well-versed in this, but can you explain how this is any different than funding the Downtown Cleveland Alliance employees? I see no difference in terms of the big picture. But regarding the details I suppose this is different because the cost will be put directly on the consumer. Cimperman brought up a good point that the hesitation about the FEB tax was very similar to that about the DCA when it was first proposed. You're right, costs are born directly by the consumer in this proposed plan, vs the Downtown Cleveland Alliance is a tax on the property, paid by the building owners. The other big difference in my mind is that the DCA ambassadors are there to keep the streets "clean & safe". Mostly labor. This new proposal for the flats is more of a capital improvement program for actual infrastructure maintenance, which should be carried by the developer
  10. I think its way too vague. I don't object in theory but tax dollars shouldnt be spent on private parking lots, landscaping or security.., very surprised frank veto'd it though. Seems like he'd be a little more in tune with council president on the matter
  11. I know what they are asking for those buildings and it's just not going to happen. Most of the buildings will require major rehab to be repurposed as apartments or mixed use. The only way the numbers work is with major "free money" in terms of historic tax credits etc. The competition for that money is very fierce right now too
  12. Why is it a bummer about a new Golden Gate location? Do you know where Golden Gate is? It's a very dense shopping center on Mayfield, actually one of the oldest shopping centers in the NATION. The new Lizard location is going into the dead Mexican joint along 271. Not sure any of that qualifies as sprawl It's a giant strip mall with a giant parking lot right off of a highway onramp. How aren't you sure that all of that qualifies as sprawl? it's a not a giant strip mall at all. by comparison to a lot of other suburban developments, it's pretty small. There's no large big box tenant like a walmart or target, it's mostly smaller shops of 3,000 sf or less. And the parking is actually at a premium in that place. Go out there today and see how many open spots there are, esp with the large snow piles... in fact, the limited parking is why they dont have a big box anchor. And the shopping center was there before the freeway connection was, so... it was built to serve the mass of dense post-war housing that surrounds it. The shopping center actually predates the word "sprawl"

  14. Perhaps but TE's get open in the middle of the endzone behind the LB's or another WR can get open racing across... regardless, the coach is taking the heat today for a bad call but I think the QB made a bad read & bad throw
  15. it was a dumb call to pass on the 1 yd line when you have Lynch at RB who'd been effective but the blame goes to Russell Wilson. The receiver was NOT open and he tried to force the ball in there. Should have rolled out, looked at other options, kept it, thrown it away, whatever. Carroll is taking the blame to protect his QB but that was a dumb throw. He should have seen the coverage at the line and recognized it was not his #1 option and checked into a running play or something else
  16. RTA bus stuck this morning at the intersection of Huron, trying to turn east on Superior. Such a mess. Had traffic backed up in all directions - Huron, Detroit/Superior, W.9th...

None of this is all that surprising. I use facebook to keep up with friends and family but don't really "like" hardly any corporate pages. When facebook had its stock offering the whole question was how it was going to create more revenue from advertisers. Sounds like they are finding ways to do just that
  18. Hmm So white officers policing white communities have already failed also???? I don't know if you watched the segment, but I probably didn't explain that properly. To expand on your point, the interviewer at one point asked Chief Williams about black parents having "the talk" with their children, to be extra careful around white cops, etc. The Chief said it's more about being respectful & courteous of all people, be it black or white, cops or teachers, etc. Another great answer I thought.
  19. I just watched the "60 Minutes" piece on Cleveland tonight. I thought it was pretty good. Not exactly hard hitting as I might expect on a typical piece, but they did ask a few tough questions. I thought the Chief handled himself pretty well in the interview. Took responsibility for what's happened and said they are taking steps to address, but denied the charges of systemic problems that were leveled in the Justice report. A few other things: - I thought the two white officers patrolling the 4th district represented pretty well. A local black man said too many police shoot first & ask questions later. The officer said he's made hundreds of gun-arrests & never fired his weapon. I think the officers really came across as concerned about the community and taking a personal interest in the citizens. - The claim of 400,000 "9-1-1" emergency calls a year really put into perspective the constant state of emergency that the city is in. There's not even 400,000 residents in Cleveland. - I thought the Chief really handled the question about "not enough minority officers" in a good way. He said diversity is at the forefront of everything they do but if we are at a point of only black officers being able to police black communities, we've already failed.
  20. 60 Minutes is airing a story this week about Cleveland police and their use of force and recent Justice Dept report
  21. Or maybe the Cayenne Porsche GPS reported it was stolen and alerted the driver it was transmitting location to authorities? Honestly I don't even know how new cars are stolen? I thought anything built since early 2000's required a special key with a chip to be started.. EDIT: Nevermind, I see the car was left running...
  22. What do you think his motivation/rationale is for coming back to play his last year at OSU? Desire to win another National Title? He's got a VERY crowded QB field now with a 33% shot at winning the start, at best, and that's assuming his shoulder is 100%. Perhaps his shoulder isn't 100% and that's what's limiting other schools from making him a good offer? Many people suggesting he won't play QB and will transition to some type of halfback...
  23. I saw an internet rumor stating that Braxton Miller was enrolled at OSU for spring classes, therefore he must be staying on at OSU for his senior year. I have no idea if he's enrolled or if that means he's coming back, but count me as shocked. I thought he was leaving even before Cardale Jones' decision to stay and definitely thought he was leaving after.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Is there a Cleveland code requiring residents to clear their sidewalks? This was always something we had to do in DC Before they worry about snow clearing, they city needs to enforce actual sidewalk regulations. City of Cleveland has code requiring cracked or heaved sidewalks greater than 1.5" be replaced at property owner's expense. Zero enforcement. Correction. It's 1/2" or more, needs to be replaced.
