  1. would make a great location for an urban TARGET store, right in the midst of all the apartment conversions... if they started on the Phase 2 Casino tomorrow, it'd be 2 years till completion before they could empty out the Higbee space. Quite a few new apartments downtown by then
  2. The gambling dollars are just spread too thin now. Look how many gambling venues are within a 2 hr drive... we're not drawing the out-of-town gambler like was promised and there's even more competition for the stay-at-home gambler.
  3. Living above a casino? Sounds risky. Not sure I'd be willing to take that sort of gamble... BA-doop-tish!
  4. Larkin had an op-ed piece in the PD a few days ago that was pretty harsh on Gilbert and speculated the phase 2 would probably never happen. Casinos just aren't producing enough revenue. EDIT: Here it is: http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2014/09/how_dan_gilbert_and_allied_cas.html "Part of the bait used to attract support from voters was Gilbert’s promise to build a glittering, $600 million casino along Huron Road with breathtaking views of the Cuyahoga River. Plans the Gilbert group shared with Plain Dealer architecture critic Steve Litt showed what Litt described as a “contemporary building with large areas of glass at two main entrances” and “large, street-level plazas flanking the entries off Huron, where the public will be able to stroll and enjoy gardens, fountains and views of the Cuyahoga River.” That’s what voters were promised. What they got was a cramped casino, shoehorned into four floors of a former department store. It’s tastefully done, but located in a building designed to sell things to customers, not soak them. Asked about the promised, $600 million casino, Jennifer Kulczycki, spokeswoman for Gilbert’s Rock Ventures gaming company, replied in an email, “I don’t have an update at this time.” But the dirty little secret here is that the market for casino gambling has cratered, especially in northern states east of the Mississippi River."
  5. Apparently. But it's also not unheard of for building owners to pay high end car dealers to park a couple cars out front to create a buzz and the look of exclusivity
  6. No way should the Buckeyes have retained their high rank after Braxton went down. The college rankings are idiotic. After Braxton went down, after Carols Hyde went to the NFL, after the entire O-Line was replaced... I wouldn't call it a dumpster fire. Oregon is going to be a national title contender and MSU played them tight for 3 quarters, in Oregon. MSU might still run the table and go to a great bowl game. Michigan got smoked but I expect Notre Dame to be a national contender as well. Let's keep things in perspective
  7. That new bar is going to be the new place to hang for the Cleveland sports stars
  8. No hard updates, but it will be moving forward soon. I expect plans to be announced by the end of the year.
  9. I believe you are correct. In my opinion, I think this raises the bar for future development as far as design and amenities goes. I think it will be Starks NuCLEus that could take us to that next level. Just wait until the May Company project gets underway. A full city block right across from public square...
  10. Well..... don't forget that a lot of the prep work, especially the abatement, had already been done. And the façade didn't need the restoration work a lot of the adaptive re-uses we have seen in this City recently. He didn't have to create a blank canvas out of a former office building..... he basically bought one. Are you kidding me? I can't tell you how many men, hours, blood, sweat, and tears went into making this deadline.... I love people who talk out there rear. The abatement was NOT done fully, and lets not forget the county building was under construction at the same time... This building was in crap condition. You won't find another developer as fast, efficient, and cost effective as Geis in Northeast Ohio period... ^Very true. Geis & their team opened a lot of eyes with this project. Prior to this, they were of course a very successful developer, but had been almost exclusive in the suburban, green field, industrial/manufacturing sector. They bit off a big chunk with this project & learned on the fly and pulled it off. Good for them, good for the city.
  11. What is the target market there at "The 9"? Those places seem really high end, I'm surprised many young people can afford to live there.
  12. We need to get Sandy Coakley on this forum...

I've seen it too. Ironic that the Kasich camp seems to be encouraging people to do an internet search on "Ed Fitzgerald Cuyahoga Exec" and see what comes up. I dont know if that was the plan all along but it sure seems timely given the recent coverage of Fitz's 4am adventures. It does come off lame though, that Kasich has to go negative already rather than trumpet his achievements as governor, whatever they decide they are. I think Fitzgerald will be using economic data to paint the Kasich era as pretty lame in terms of job creation, increasing personal income, fixing the housing market, etc. I'm wondering how soon we see the SB5 issue brought up by the Fitzgerald team to rally the public union support who might not be paying attention. Going this route could backfire though, given public polling was pretty split on the issue

what sort of crap, specifically, are you talking about? Just curious

THey had to climb into the backseat to figure out where her hotel was?

this whole story is so dumb, you couldn't make it up. It really does make me question the guy's judgement, which is too bad because I've been very impressed with his leadership & accomplishments thus far as Cuyahoga County exec

He was driving. Lakewood has records of reimbursing him for mileage that he drove on the job. Small potatoes. The story with the woman bothers me more, not because he was cheating, but because that's how guys get blackmailed while in higher office...

So sleazy. For whatever reason it really surprises me that Fitzgerald would do something like this. Sheesh, get a hotel room already. I'm wondering how the Kasich team even plays this up come election time.... if they need to.
  19. I think residents are starting to move into the "Shoreway" building at 76th adjacent to Battery Park. Quite a bit of miscellaneous work still to do but a fantastic project nonetheless. Vintage has an uphill battle building a 90 apartment building at Battery Park. The development was planned, marketed & sold as a condo community, not an apartment community. They will probably have to get the bylaws amended to allow an apartment building and they'll need the residents to agree to make that change. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds there...
  20. say what? bumper to bumper in the morning & again in the afternoons for a solid 2 hrs, stop & go... it's horrible I did enjoy the article in the Scene but it's hardly unbiased journalism. They came out of the gate that it's an evil project put forth by underhanded city leaders to benefit their interests. The title of the article even tells readers to be outraged. That may be somewhat true, but picking & choosing facts to get your point across? I mean, did they even interview anyone from ODOT for the article? Or just pick & choose quotes from the past that illustrate their point...
  21. well there's no way anyone can pay what those owners are asking for that property, then demolish, redevelop & build something new, and still get a profit out of the deal...
  22. Stop & Frisk is a controversial approach to combat gangs. Cleveland already has laws on the books regarding curfews to get youths off the street, loitering, trespassing, etc. If you see a group of individuals you suspect is up to no good, stop & frisk is probably just one of many tools law enforcement already has at it's disposal
  23. Two of those properties are already up for sale. I assume this is the active business you are referring to. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1279-W-73rd-St-Cleveland-OH-44102/2106169524_zpid/ http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1294-W-70th-St-Cleveland-OH-44102/2106169523_zpid/ That seems bizarre that Mobile Martin would sell now. Their business relies on highway access and they are going to have a new direct shot right outside their front door with this new interchange. I'm curious where they think they would relocate to. No way will someone pay what they are asking for either. The city should hurry up & rezone all that area along 70th & 73rd to be multi-story residential/mixed use for density, so anyone potentially interested in buying knows that is what the end use wouild have to be
  24. I'm a huge fan of the CVSR and love using it & taking friends & family on it but I really don't see the benefit of an extension to Steelyard. The users of the CVSR are nature lovers, recreation folks, visitors, tourists, etc looking to make a day out of it. There's nothing really do or see in Steelyard from a recreation aspect. The only places to eat are Applebees or some fast food. Lots of big box retail. I don't see the connection here (pun intended). I guess it would give residents of Cleveland a place to jump on but technically they can already at Rockside, no?
  25. There's really no other industrial property south of Frascati. The next property down on 73rd is the Mobile Martin ambulance dispatch center and further up toward Detroit on the east side of 73rd is pretty much all empty buildings and vacant lots... The west side of 73rd is either Battery Park development or older existing homes...
