  1. that new railroad bed location (shoe-fly) is gonna pump the ground & shake the area 10x worse than before. Houses could feel trains coming by before and that was after about 100 years of the railroad bed settling & compacting....
  2. that sand is trucked in for backfill material. It's not native soil. Not saying there isn't sand in the soil, but not like that. I've been watching the trenching & excavating for this project and it's mostly hard clay being dug out.
  3. I spoke to the leasing agent the other day. He said only 6 units remained available. Pretty incredible. Friday night I think they are having some event there, Carnivale, or something including fashion show, music, etc

NBA owners voting forcing Sterling to sell team. Sterling gets an offer for $2 Billion. Sterling's lawyer says they will sue the NBA. This story is crazy. When the initial talk of a forced sale started, estimates were around $600 million. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/11003237/former-microsoft-executive-steve-ballmer-submits-winning-bid-buy-clippers-according-sources

Marcie Seidel, executive director of the Drug Free Action Alliance, a statewide group based in central Ohio, said the law should not change. “The problem that we’re concerned about … (is people) will be thinking they are only drinking one drink when really it’s the equivalent of two or three (normal) beers,” Seidel said. Save us Marcie. Save us from ourselves! It's not that this could/would never happen, but the cases would certainly be statistically insignificant in terms of negative impact on society. Are Ohio Republicans ready to ban pop servings over 20 oz. yet? Edit: It would also be further fixed by simply putting into the law that establishments wishing to serve >12% ABV beer must provide ABV info on their menu. Most places serving such niche beers probably already do this. seems very similar to the legalization of marijuana in Colorado... a joint being smoked today is nowhere near the same joint people smoked 10 yrs ago. Much higher ThC levels, longer lasting effects... nobody seems too worried out there though, right?
  6. Hate the project all you want & hate Kasich all you want, I'm not arguing either. But the allegations that this is his "gift" which will "kill off" the east side red line is a stretch on multiple levels. It's not a gift, and it's not the only thing he's done for NE Ohio in terms of infrastructure. Your other comments are just angry speculation
  7. whatever. Kasich also put funding back for the Shoreway project and the 2nd phase of the Innerbelt bridge project. Those are 2 of the largest road projects in Cleveland area in recent history. As much as the Democratic leaders in Cleveland want to hate on Johnny K, they sure were smiling when that money was committed.
  8. blows my mind that out of 300 people, someone wouldn't speak up & tell police where to go, who to investigate, what car to look out for, a name of a suspect... rather than continue to let someone loose on the street that fires into a crowd of innocent bystanders....
  9. Cleveland police chief on weekend violence: 'Somebody knows what happened' http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/05/cleveland_police_chief_on_week.html#incart_m-rpt-1 Williams specifically pointed to the block party shooting. He said at least 300 people saw what happened, but hinted that witnesses are not cooperating with police. "Somebody knows what happened," he said. "They need to give us that information because people are dead, and their loved ones need to know justice will be done."
  10. Some very accomplished developers here in Cleveland too. Weston, Forest City, DDR, Stark... these people know what they're doing. Risk & rate of return just seem to favor parking lots for the time being. Don't discount the legacy costs of doing development in Cleveland vs a town like Columbus either. You have no idea what's under those parking lots or what it would take to build on them, but Weston does.
  11. ^they are really struggling on getting that place open. I know there's a lot of build-out & specialty items to getting a brew pub open, but seems like they might not have had the best planning. Whether it's financing, getting the lease straight, or whatever, I've seen dozens of places open faster than this with high end buildouts
  12. anyone else notice that the grass at the Cudell West Blvd Red line stop hasn't been cut all season? It's knee high now....
  13. 8 shot, 2 dead at block party over the weekend - WTH is wrong with people??!!! http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cleveland/2014/05/25/multiple-shot-on-the-east-side/9583977/ What are the chances the shooters are found & prosecuted?
  14. Dimit is still a great firm capable of great designs. I think this is a case of designing to the budget.
  15. if those new townhomes are built with quality exterior materials like that, they will be a huge improvement to the area the more I look at the design, the more I like it. Much higher end than anything else in the city, possibly along the lines of Villa Carabelli townhomes over near Little Italy, but I think these are even nicer. They will sell fast. With a 15 yr tax abatement too no doubt, they will sell for well over 500k each

    Retired. He's been there forever.
  17. I'm fine with it. Keep in mind, it's residential, not storefront. I don't think anyone would necessarily want their living room or dining room window right at street level with no setback...
  18. I've been looking at that lot for years wondering when it would get developed. Looks like someone finally decided the time was right. I think now that NRP has announced their major project for that block between 65th & 58th, there's going to be quite a few more smaller projects taking flight
  19. walked through the site yesterday. The sewer relocation portion of this project is pretty much done. All the new sewer line is in place & they have poured new structures for the sewer connections to the existing sewer at 70th & over at the the west end behind the volleyball courts. There's a big steel tube they are welding up, I'm assuming for bypassing the sewer when the time is right and they need to close up both structures. The new temporary pathway of the railroad, when it's shifted to the south, is pretty clearly visible now. You can see the pathway being prepared in the photos above. Pretty tremendous project of infrastructure, if you're into that sort of thing.

Well if the City owned the land, then they could do whatever they want with it. Highest & best use certainly isnt parking.

Interesting analogies but those companies responded to RFP situations where there was competition for the subsidy & chance to make money with the asset, which is owned by the City. The sports teams did not have to pitch against other competing uses for the right to use the land or stadiums. And the zero sum argument doesn't work to say "yeah but if Browns stadium wasn't there, the Warehouse district would collapse". Well the warehouse district isn't doing so hot WITH Browns stadium and any other imaginable scenario would have another multi-use development on that property, would likely add as much or MORE draw than Browns stadium. Ditto for the other arenas on Gateway

A lot of good information arguing what COULD be done with more taxes on that land & the buildings built on it... http://plainpress.wordpress.com/2014/05/02/promises-broken-property-taxes-promised-in-1990-could-have-been-a-game-changer-for-cleveland/ After I read it, I came away with a feeling that Cleveland is a second tier city, and rather than just admit it and make the most of our resources, the leaders are unwilling to acknowledge it and seem determined to hang on to the sports teams, even though pretty much everyone agrees they are a net-negative, which the city cannot afford.
