Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
that was never in the cards. 65th is the main terminus for the massive sewer line that is being relocated now for the 73rd connection. The only reason it's possible at 73rd is because of all the vacant land.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Extending Caruso through would be nice. Curious what the other surrounding neighbors will think about all this added traffic. Should look at putting that Shoreway connection back in the plans at W. 54th, at least for the East bound lane

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I'm surprised they're looking to place some of the buildings with units right up to the railroad tracks... Also curious if there is any discussion about the city replacing Breakwater, the east/west street at the south of this project. The street is a mess

^agreed. All that. And we have the highest rate ever of men, prime working age 25-45, not in the work force.

US Economy: News & Discussion
it's not just the public sector, come on now. our economy today is more specialized than ever before. Without basic skills, you're not qualified to do much at all. Even with basic skills & 2 year community college degree, you're not qualified to do much. So comparing to previous recessions isn't apples to apples. The labor participation rate is at an all time low. Maybe that's an effect of high unemployment or maybe it's a cause... but people are choosing not to work. Or more importantly, they are choosing not to even actively seek work, which is why the unemployment rate is dropping...

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
^im not expecting people to do anything. My original comment was that TOD in Cleveland, especially the section from E55th to 105th, is a bit of a stretch. Seems like you agree.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
A couple reasons: - Save $ on parking at your final destination - You still need your car to get into the city because you live in the burbs - You need your car to pick up your kids, run errands, etc after work EDIT: I don't think many suburbanites are as "scared to death" of the city as you might think. Most suburbanites I know love the city but choose the suburban lifestyle due to kids.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Transit Oriented Development or "TOD" gets thrown around so much these days it's ridiculous. While I'm generally in favor of it, I just don't see this area, E. 55th to E. 105th, ever developing enough that the market forces would take advantage of whatever TOD aspects were built in to the project. There is already a decent station at E55th. If anything, make this a bigger park-n-ride stop for people trying to get to University Circle. You're never going to stop the cycle of commuters coming in from the suburbs, but you could intercept them there and limit some of the needed parking & car traffic in University Circle. Cleveland already has nice RTA locations for the red line on the west side at 65th, Cudell/Detroit, and 117th/Madison... can anyone point to significant, market-rate development that has occurred at these stops? And the West side is about 50 years ahead of the east side in terms of liveable neighborhoods.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
i see Fickell moving on & Vrabel taking over as D-coordinator. I was watching pregame & it showed both of those guys talking to the players & they seemed to ignore Fickell but Vrabel had their attention 100%. The guy has a ton of credibility after playing in the NFL for TWELVE years and winning 3 super bowls. I'd pay attention to him instead of Fickell too.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
yeah it's great news for sure. Remember you heard it here first ;-) We'll see about the pool... things like that are always shown on design concepts to spark interest but they are the first things to get chopped when it's time to crunch the numbers. Regardless, this pushes development further along the lake & adds more quality residents to the area which should drive more demand for neighborhood amenities and quality retail options The real question I'm wondering is how long the owners of the Westinghouse building will continue to hold out and sit on their property. That building is a slam dunk for apartment/condo conversion. Big parcel, amazing views, plenty of parking, would easily qualify for historic tax credits

Cleveland City Council
You want to increase turnover? Start by getting rid of their control of development money in their wards. When you say "Development money", do you mean the funding for the local CDC's or something else?

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
I think the entire warehouse district is going to undergo a change, ready or not. The rise of new entertainment districts like East 4th, West 25th & soon to be Flats East Bank has permanently changed the attraction of the Warehouse District. They should focus on other uses like retail or other services to support the residential because I think they'll only attract second-rate night clubs at this point, which is a big reason why the landlord wouldn't approve the sale of the Blind Pig, so I'm told.

Cleveland City Council
Double dipping discussion aside, I'm torn on whether so many of these incumbents should stick around for City Council. Of course veteran leadership is a good thing but at what point are these guys all just "same old same old" with no new thoughts or approaches? Too afraid to shake things up and damage relationships that could rattle the political power structure? Even if it means doing what's best for the residents & the city, overall?

Car Ownership
Auto Makers Rebound as Buyers Go Big U.S. Sales Cruise Back to 2007 Levels, Driven by Fondness for Pickups, SUVs http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303870704579298142769322998 Five years after skyrocketing fuel prices and turmoil in financial markets knocked auto makers into a tailspin, the U.S. market has recovered to its former size and character, dominated by larger, more powerful and more profitable vehicles. For the year, U.S. consumers bought 15.6 million vehicles, up 7.6% from 2012, according to market researcher Autodata Corp., the strongest volume since 2007. Purchases of light trucks including sport-utility vehicles exceeded cars, a reversal from the year earlier. The Obama administration, as part of its publicly funded rescues of GM and Chrysler, now majority owned by Italy's Fiat, pushed Detroit to focus on smaller, more efficient vehicles and plug-in electric cars that use little or no petroleum. But as gas prices drifted lower last year, U.S. consumers trading old vehicles for new favored pricey pickup trucks, SUVs and luxury cars. Ford, for example, boosted sales of its F-150 pickup by 8.4% in December over a year ago, while sales of its subcompact Fiesta and compact Focus cars plunged by 20% and 31% respectively. U.S. sales averaged 16 million units a year between 1998 and 2007 then bottomed out at 10.4 million vehicles in 2009. Analysts and industry executives expect sales this year to reach about 16 million vehicles."

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
So last night was the closing night for "Blind Pig" on West 6th street. Been open for 18 years, probably the longest running bar still in original format at the Warehouse District. The numbers for Blind Pig are way down from what they were a few years ago (pre-W. 25th) but it's still one of the biggest draws in the Warehouse District, also for Browns game days. The bar owners have been trying to sell the business for several months now and apparently found some interested, qualified buyers but the landlord would not approve the deal. Legal action is forthcoming I'm told

I prefer the Honda commercials 10x over the fake-whimsical Prius ads which are done as a cartoon showing the car winding through country roads filled with flowers...

All marketing is forced to some degree. Cleveland's Latino population needs an image boost after serial killers/serial rapists Ariel Castro & Elias Acevedo...

Why are young people driving less?
Good point. Friends, Seinfeld, Sex & the City, all often showed characters walking on the street, plot lines sometimes discussed the characters not having a car...
