  1. Wow, yet another groundbreaking push back … this time, until early next year, along with squishy words like “should” (break ground) added to an “ unforeseen issues” caveat. Seems Fairmount still can’t close the financing on this deal, even after the substantial County subsidy, extensive City infrastructure improvements and what should be money flowing from what appears to be the great success of Phase I (fully leased office tower; enormously popular new hotel and upscale eateries) … Can someone reassure me that Phase II will, indeed, happen? … Paul in Cleveland? Michelle? … Adam Fishman? They can & will close the financing. It's not something that is easily done though, which is why you haven't seen major new construction of residential apartments downtown since.... Crittenden? Designs & floorplans get tweaked to get the maximum efficiencies before they go back to the financing table with a FINAL number
  2. I knew Illinois would put up a few scores, Nathan Scheelhouse has been a starter there for what seems like forever. He's a very mobile, accurate passer. OSU secondary has been picked apart on several occasions already this year. I like our chances in a shootout with anyone though, whether it's Baylor, Oregon or whomever. A National championship seems like a remote possibility at this point, but I'll take another undefeated season & a big win in a BCS matchup
  3. So perhaps it should be called Cleveland's Garment District instead of the Warehouse District?
  4. ^amen. East Fourth is an alleyway, I wouldn't call it a section of the city, therefore judging it as healthy or unhealthy. And the warehouse district is struggling. There are easily a half dozen vacant bar/restaurant storefronts with more on the way. Rent is way too high for the returns that area is drawing and it needs to reinvent itself as something other than an entertainment district Back on topic, Playhouse Square is doing very well. - There is very strong demand for office space in the area, the US Bank building right at the corner of this chandelier project is nearly full - Playhouse Square real estate group has done a remarkable job attracting & retaining tenants to fill it's space - Hanna apartments are leasing well from what I've heard. - The reconfigured open arts space at Euclid & E. 13th looks great - Even many of the adjacent storefronts along Prospect are active with some type of office tenant. - Add in some of the planned additions like the Hofbrau Haus and this could easily become the hottest area in the city. I think the chandelier is awesome. $16M does seem high for the project but its obviously more complex than I've initially perceived. Honestly, I think it's one of those cool things that Cleveland proposes, but never actually pulls off. Surprised it's coming together. Bravo to all the parties that are making it happen. I think it will be fun to see images of Cleveland in the national media showing this instead of the constant shots of East 4th that we've all seen a thousand times
  5. roads & airport are hardly similar investment as hotels. Plenty of hotels out there being done locally without government sponsorship.
  6. You know what I'd like to see about this building? having it filled up regularly. I think the County is making a mistake by trying to retain ownership here & be involved with the development. Sell the parcel to a qualified operator or do a land lease & be done with it. There is no reason the county should be in the hotel business.
  7. I don't think that's what the construction is. They are still digging the infrastructure, storm sewers, etc for the next phase. Lots of work before any building foundations get started. I could be wrong but I'm looking at it from my office
  8. I walked through this construction site on Saturday. (Alongside it via the RR tracks actually since the crews were working.) It really seems to be moving along faster than expected. I was initially told this sewer relocation would take 10 months but it's only been 2 months and they're already up to W. 70th. I think they'll be laying pipe at 73rd by December and the pipe diameter probably gets slightly smaller and excavation gets slightly shallower as they head west... I might stop into the job trailer one of these days & just ask how they are doing on the overall schedule. That railroad bridge is going to be interesting....
  9. I'd love to know how the Clifton location is hanging on. I have tried to support that place countless times but everytime I go in, the food is unappealing, warmed-over, overpriced... I suspect they'll have to reformat with this new store coming online that sells prepared foods
  10. KJP, crack a smile for crissake
  11. I agree, there's no parking at Happy Dog. I live close by & walk to all these bars, XYZ, Stone Mad, Parkview, etc. But I'm 6-1, 200+ and still wouldn't do it alone late night. There's a million ways to not be a victim. Have someone drop you off at your car, have someone walk you to your car, take a cab to the bar & back....
  12. How about "not cool" of your friend? At what point are people responsible for their own behaviors? Don't walk down 58th by yourself late at night. 58th isnt what I'd call a bad street but it is the far edge of Gordon Square commercial district. It's pretty desolate between Detroit & the Parkview & could be full of surprises south of Detroit. The area is definitely on the upswing but you can't put yourself in unsafe situations, then be angry or surprised when bad things happen. At the same time, I'm glad your friend wasn't hurt
  13. Casual is best for me. I'm much more likely to attend somewhere that I can just "mill around the bar" with a drink & talk to others as opposed to a formal sit down discussion
  14. ^how old are you? LOL
  15. I'm lobbying for a new meeting venue over in the Detroit Shoreway area, perhaps Parkview or Happy Dog? Both probably have live music on Saturday night
  16. every year for the last half dozen years or more, at least one student in the CSU urban planning class studies this site for multi story mixed use residential over retail. The numbers work. The market demand for new upscale rental apartments is there. I would think the deal would only be getting better on something like this now that interest rates are low & rental occupancy is up.

I think all the incumbents won yesterday, including Jeff Johnson who edged out Eugene Miller, where both were incumbents. Only 2 of the races were close I think. Matt Zone ran unopposed. Probably a reflection of apathetic residents than an endorsement of the councilman.
  18. not really much different than Iowa/Minnesota & Maryland/Rutgers being in the same conference, geographically...
  19. of course I'm biased but right now Alabama's only quality win was against Texas A&M, which was a very close game. Texas A&M has not beat a ranked team yet themselves either, so...
  20. Anyone else buying into the possibility that OSU might be left out of a national title game, even if they win out & claim the Big Ten Title? I think at least one of the teams ahead of OSU will lose, it just happens every year. I also think that OSU has such a huge fan base, one of the biggest in the country, they make such an attractive team to include on a national title ticket... fan base for FSU & Oregon are nowhere near what OSU has. it becomes much more of an attractive TV event having OSU on the bill as 25-0... Advertisers want that matchup.
  21. Purdue is the worst team in the Big Ten, worse than Minnesota, Illinois or Indiana. OSU is hitting on all cylinders now

The side show that is Cleveland City Council continues. Zack Reed introduces a measure protesting "60 Minutes"... supported by all except the council president who admittedly "can't stand him"... http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2013/10/cleveland_councilman_zack_reed_9.html#incart_m-rpt-2 Nice play actually by Zack to get his name in the news for something other than his 3 DUI arrests. $50 says he gets re elected. EDIT: I see the PD endorsed him. Make that $5,000 says he gets re elected
  23. Seriously? Alabama has had some slow starts & still has to play an SEC title game. If OSU wins out, they will be 25-0. No way will they be held out of a title game. Think about it, OSU has one of the biggest fan bases in the country. Sponsors drool at the idea of that sort of tv draw
  24. one other thing that gives OSU an edge is they've already faced a lot of adversity... from Guitton playing so well when Braxton was injured, other RB's filling in while Carlos Hyde was suspended, defensive secondary stepping up when Roby was suspended & Christian Bryant injured (still out)... I think the defense continues to develop talent Florida State will destroy Miami, bet the house on that one. Stanford/Oregon should be a fun game to watch I haven't watched Oklahoma or Baylor much yet
  25. So long as OSU wins out, I"m not worried about making the national title game. Alabama & Oregon both have tough games ahead of them. If OSU wins out & beats MSU handily in the Big Ten title game, we'll be about 25-0. No way will they be left out of the title game.
